did you have any driveability problems with the light coming on? did it blink or was just on steady?
  • pelican19pelican19 Member Posts: 323
No issues driving. When it first came on it was blinking. The next time I started the truck it was steady...
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
my '07 santa fe awd limited is in the shop now for a couple of things but the svc eng light did come on - cleared it and it came back so they're checking that...1st time i think the car was surging like a problem with transmission or throttle control or something - the second time it happened it came with a loud misfire and the light started blinking - pulled over and stopped - shut off the car - then turned on - light was steady - no driving problems - next time i turned it on light was gone... i think it's o2 sensor and spark plug issues but i will let everyone know what the dealer says - i think i got that loud misfire b4 - really loud like something hit the car - 3 other cars pulled over to see if it was their car - i think it was mine! no svc eng light that time....
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
dealership lied and said they couldn't get any history from my car's computer - i say lie becuase i saw the codes already and knew one was still present b4 i took it in - i never cleared it. Strike 2 on them... anyway - i'll wait to see if i have any further svc engine light issues...

I have had the same problem with my 2007 Santa Fe Limited. I purchased it in January 2007. No problems until May. One day, the engine light started blinking. Then became steady. Of course, it happened on a Friday evening...after the service departments at my local dealers had closed. I took it to an Advanced Auto Parts who ran a code check on it. It came back as a P0300 which is "random or multiple misfire." When I took it to the service department the following week, it also coded a P0300 but since that is a generic code, they could not figure out why. They reset the code.

I was able to drive it for several weeks but it happened again. I drive it a few times and it resets itself. I have not noticed any misfire or other issues...just that it doesn't get but about 19 mpg arount town and 22 mpg on the highway.

This vehicle only has 8000+ miles. I suppose that I will take the advice of the service center and drive it until failure. After all, as the service tech pointed out, it has a ten year warranty. ;)
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
yeah - i bring mine in on tues - we'll see what they say - i'm pretty sure that will be the code... i didn't check this time- i want to make sure they have a light/memory to look for... commonly techs just reset to see if it comes back as a hard code - so expect to be sent away with no resolution... i intend to be a thorn...
  • angel20angel20 Member Posts: 22
I am new at this, but I came on line to see if anyone else had the same ENGINE LIGHT problem as I do. I also had a lie from the dealer Techs, had been sent away saying it was a GAS cap problem, and didn't get a code, but a MISFIRE code. I have had the santa fe in the shop now for the 7th time. and no resolution. I bought my santa fe in Sept...and started acting up around 10,000 miles. Now at 18,000 I am through with the dealers that have no idea how to fix it. The way the car drives it like I have a flat tire. I have also had to pull over just to see if I ran over something. hopefully yours will not do this, cause it is scary! I got the lemon law involved, and they are handling it. I never received a answer until they received their Lawyer letter. If you are interested what they told me.. just ask!

I would like to know if you have anymore problems with the light coming on after they changed your plug and sensor? Please read my latest entry due to many others having this same problem
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
i'd like to know what they said after lwayer letter - how was your mpg with this svc eng light on?
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
funny - (not funny) - gas cap problem ie left loose or pumping while car is on usually gives an emmission code (small leak)
  • angel20angel20 Member Posts: 22
Well after 7 returns with the same engine light situation. I contacted lemon law, feeling no where to turn. A phone call from the dealer at 8am asking to bring my vehicle in on Wed and the Hyundai Specialist will personally take my vehicle and examine it. And she has one of the only CARDS to re program my vehicle. Amazing that this was one of the fastest selling models in our area, and I am the only one getting the special treatment. I had never gotten a phone call EVER from them when I asked them to call, but now they call me first. It is too late.. every time they touch my santa fe, it drives worst. I have a 1 year old baby, and I fear staling in the middle of traffic. What then? Mpg now is about 19 to 20 mpg
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
anytime you bring your car in for svc eng light - always request/demand the code that they retrieved from the car's computer using their diagnostic computer...
if your car has service engine light blinking or solid and the car has hesitation, jerking motion in drive or reverse, light goes on and off on its own with no intervention - the problem may be a TSB that just came in about a week ago - when I get the tsb # I will post on the tsb section - also - i'd like to see that the correction from the tsb works! problem may be o2 sensor bank 1 - i had code p2600
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
p.s: i might have another problem on my hands - p2600 refers to Coolant Pump Control Circuit/Open - so i don't see how the o2 sensor would be related unless something to do with engine/exhaust not heating up quick enough for O2 sensor to read properly - so hopefully the guy i talked to was misinformed as to what part would be ordered and installed - if the coolant pump is the problem then replacing the O2 sensor will not fix the problem! I'll keep all posted...
  • angel20angel20 Member Posts: 22
now I know that I should of insisted on getting the codes, after the run around I have had. My car does all those things, except I never noticed any problem in reverse. I have had jerking, staling, hesitation. I did not mention that 3 services ago they changed the o2sensor and was sure that would fix it, but it didn't. The latest is moving fuel injectors around to cylinder 2 and 3.. what ever that means. Since then the timing feels off. Could you please find the tsb on this problem.... Thanks
  • angel20angel20 Member Posts: 22
    Hey all regarding ENGINE LIGHT!
Just got a call about my appointment tomorrow with the dealer.....after contacting lemon law everything is moving fast now. The dealer is putting all responsibility in Hyundai, and is blaming them for there problems... they will not touch this one. Hyundai America is coming to get my santa fe and taking it out of dealerships hands. Dealer tells me that he would have done the same thing, refering to calling lemon law....but still sells the vehicles on their lot. I asked him if he is informing all the people buying this vehicle, he declined to talk any further..... What does this mean for those who buy tomorrow?
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
my big OOPS! the code was actually P2a00 which directly relates to the O2 sensor bank 1 - i'll let everyone know what the tsb # is when and if i find out... they have to order along with cover for accessory power outlet behind center console. that cover is over $100 so don't break it - they covered me under warranty though...
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
this is a big deal! good that they are finally taking responsibility but bad that this looks like it could be a common problem that a lot of us will face- i really hope they find the problem or it results in a recall - otherwise - others of us will get the same run around if and when the problem comes to our vehicles...
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
what were the other services done to you car (by dealer or others?)
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
did you get misfire code? did they check spark plugs and spark plug coils yet?

    (could be bad gas too)
  • jcwsbltdjcwsbltd Member Posts: 167
Since reading the posts, over time, and with my own experiences, there seems to be a pattern developing of electronic failures :

    me: temp sensor failed
    brake light switch failed

others: map light issues, temp sensor wrongly wired, starter realy failed, check engine light errors, mpg errors, front air bag weight sensor errors, driver door window regulators failing, error codes wrong, TPMS errors

It's no wonder that the CEO of hyundai became obsessed with rejecting all electrical components that didn't work to specs.according to one previous post.
  • angel20angel20 Member Posts: 22
First thing the dealership fixed was the tow hook on back bumper. The cover kept popping off. Second, thing/..we had a windshield leak and water got into the rear view mirror computer.. then all the misfire codes(6). About the bad gas... yeah they checked that out also. They never changed spark plugs,I don't think.
Oh by the way. my cover broke on the back console also... is it covered by warranty?
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
they say they ordered it under warranty for me (the cover for the power outlet) - i got the blinking svc eng light again today - didn't stop until i stopped the car and read the codes - nothing new - misfires and the oxygen sensor problem - they tell me they are replaceing O2 sensor with a new type as per tsb from 1 week ago - how long ago did they replace your oxygen sensor?
  • angel20angel20 Member Posts: 22
they changed the o2 senor around 14,000 miles(on third visit).I am at 19,000 now. Today I picked up me SF from dealer. Lady from Hyundai came in to UPDATE my vehicle, as she called it, with one of the ONLY cards in the world(they keep telling me this). They say this will stop my misfires and engine light issues. No one wanted to talk to me about why they needed to update it, and if theses issues have hurt my engine..I did ask if this will be done on all 2007's, dealer just says "uh don't know". Maybe you should ask about this update also. I never did see a Hyundai rep... I guess she scooted off before I got there>
  • angel20angel20 Member Posts: 22
I have a question...with all these tsb's...when we take our vehicles in for service, is the dealer responsible for changing the recall's without telling us, or are we suppose to ask them to fix them.? Are we suppose to wait for them to break before they will fix anything?
And how do you read codes on your own?
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
TSB's are just bulletins to give techs a heads up - so when a vehicle comes in with a specific problem - they know what to look for - otherwise they don't really have to say anything - they are not recalls - recalls they are obligated to let all owners know and fix....

read the codes with a scanner - hooks up to vehicle - there are cheap ones that just give codes and you have to go look up what it means - there are ones that give codes and explainations of what the code refers to - then there are nice ones that help you narrow the problem down to the specific problem - some can even do stuff like turn on your fuel pump just to let you know that it works so look for another problem.. coool stuff :shades:
  • angel20angel20 Member Posts: 22
Thanks for the info..you know I am just a girl that does not talk a lot about car stuff. But I have learned a lot through this web site. I will let you know about my "improved" SF, and if what they did, works. NO ONE ELSE HAS HAD THIS UPDATE on their 2007? :surprise:
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
sounds like they want to "reflach" your Sante Fe's computer - anyone else have a dealer offer this to them? angel20 - how soon do you get it back?
  • angel20angel20 Member Posts: 22
I picked it up the next day. It seems to be driving ok, but as you know the engine light usually takes a couple days or weeks to return. I will fill you in later on what happens..I would at least ask about the update when you go in next. Hyundai KNOWS there is a problem with their 07's!
  • gizzer777gizzer777 Member Posts: 335
Does anyone know what these updates are for sure...also why are they doing a reflash of the ECU...I think I came in the middle of this thread. Better yet would be a list of TSB's. I will need an oil chg in a few weeks and would like to know what to ask about

So far my nov 06 build 2007 SE has been just fine
    TIA
  • angel20angel20 Member Posts: 22
If you go back and read the earlier comments, the update was done on my 07 cause I have had 7 engine light situations...where no one can tell what is wrong. Hyundai was under pressure from my lemon law lawyer to fix it or replace it. Still waiting to see what happens. :lemon:
  • gizzer777gizzer777 Member Posts: 335
I did see your posts.. Got confused since reflashing the ECU would probably not have an impact unless the data in the ECU was corrupted or incorrect IMHO...keeping my fingers crossed for you.... :) I was thinking there were a bunch of updates that they had come out with....that affected all the 07's
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
  • somedai1somedai1 Member Posts: 416
yeah - i think a reflash would help if the parameters that are set in the ecu are asking for responses that cannot be achieved.... so reset the ecu with different parameters...

I think you've nailed the problem... my 2006 Monte Carlo TPMS lite goes on whenever I pass 2 specific spots along the Interstate. There are some large microwave/cell towers in each location. I've messaged my GM dealer but no reply. I am fairly convinced this is a generic TPMS problem.
  • montec2006montec2006 Member Posts: 4
I think you'll find there are certain specific locations, as described in the Hyundai Tec Service Bulletin that trigger the problem. I have exact same issue with Monte Carlo 2006 TPMS, and I have learned three locations locally, mainly along Interstate & Turnpike near microwave/cell towers, that trigger the alert.

I've posted about this in maintenance & repair, but no activity there. My experience is similar to jcoug's but not to the extent--YET. Five miles from the dealership on purchase day the light comes on. Tires had high 30's to 40 PSI in them. I lowered to 32 considering the tires had been driven. Take it back some days later and they reset the light, but it comes back on driving home. I live with it for a couple of weeks and have them look at the light when they are changing the oil. Service guy said they had too little air and raised the pressure to 35. I mentioned the door placard says 30, but he says the tires "run better" at 35. I told him the light I was getting was not a low pressure light, but a malfunction. Tires run better at 35. The light stayed off for the next drive, but after stopping and re-starting, I'm looking at the TPMS light again. I have an appointment scheduled in the morning. We'll see what the service idiot says this time. Probably that the tires shouldn't have 35 and this is over the "safe limit" rating of 30.

My patience is thin, and I hear it cracking.

    Will post with updates.

    Hi nateman7ahc...

Is there a cell tower visible at the place where the light goes on ?
  • nateman7ahcnateman7ahc Member Posts: 14
    Hi Montec,

Actually, the light is on all the time, so i don't think it's outside interference (I hope there's not that much!). I took the car to the dealer and after they really looked at it (I don't think they did anything before but check the pressure and flash the computer) determined that the right rear pressure sensor was bad. I asked the service mgr if these things took batteries, and he gave me some line that they self-generate power. From the picture in the Veracruz brochure (which I had time to peruse while waiting), it looks like one of those large watch-type batteries on the sensor. Regardless, they didn't have the part and would be two days. So another trip to have them break the bead on the tire and replace the sensor and pair the new sensor with the computer.

Will advise as we proceed... ;)
  • nateman7ahcnateman7ahc Member Posts: 14
Turns out the right rear sensor was bad and the dealer had to replace it. Took about two hours to dismount the wheel, replace the sensor and test drive. All is working fine now, although dealer is rather frustrating with their ineptitude.

I originally started posting in May of this past year. After over a dozen different trips to the dealership for the same TPMS issue, a lot of phone calls, letters and contacting a lemon law lawyer - Hyundai finally acknowledged that there 'may' be a problem with the TPMS system on my 2007 Santa Fe. However - they made it very clear to me that I am the only owner in the entire country having this issue.
When they received the letter from the Lemon Law Lawyer saying that they better fix it or we move forward legally, Hyundai was very generous in putting me in a brand new 2007 Santa Fe (with only 11 miles on it) and they also cut me a check equal to two months of car payment (since that's about how long I was driving their rental car).

I wish it had just stopped there. But...I am sad to say that two weeks after getting into my new Santa Fe - the TPMS light went off. Here I am again, with a second car and on the 4th trip to the dealership with the TPMS issue. It's not even coming on in the same areas that it came on in the other car - so I'm not drawing any similarities to the area (ie - electromagnetic interference). Hyundai continues to send up a "specialist" mechanic every time I call. According to Hyundai, it's all a very strange coincidence and I have been told on numerous occassions by their customer service specialist that I am indeed the only person in the country having this problem and while it's very coincidental, they're looking into it.

Any thoughts??? Any solutions? Anyone else having these problems???
  • needforspeed29needforspeed29 Member Posts: 13
I have had my SF for a month now and I have never seen the TPMS light come on. I love my SF so far....no issues to report.
  • gizzer777gizzer777 Member Posts: 335
That really is odd. I have had my SF since last April...never seen it come on after self test....I wonder what is happening at your end and feel for you. Having a new car ..now 2...with a problem like that is frustrating to say the least!

    Good Luck

I agree with you. I can tolerate the bright blue during the day, but in night driving it is very distracting. I used some blue masking tape (the kind you use for painting) and cut it out to block off a lot of the display. I would like to know if there is an electrical fix to add some more resistance to the dimmer switch to dim the lights further. Insteresting that if you put your headlights on during the day the display is nice and dim???
  • jackcobjackcob Member Posts: 13
Is there any way to have the lighter and/or other power outlets be on when the car is turned off? My other cars always were wired that way. There are times when you want to leave an item to be charged (cell phone, etc) while you are in having lunch or whatever.
  • drwoodrdrwoodr Member Posts: 88
I don't have an answer for making the dash lights dimmer, but there is no difference in the display brightness during the day or at night. The display just looks dim during the day because it is so bright out. We run with our headlights on all the time. We turn the display to full brightness during the day, but have to turn it down at night.
  • bobj14bobj14 Member Posts: 8
I know that most people find the Santa Fe's blue displays to be very cool and I do like them while driving around town. However, while driving where there is no lighting, such as in the country at night, I find them very irritating. When it is very dark out the blue is so bright that it reflects off of my glasses, even when I have them turned down as low as they can go.
Does anyone else have the same issue and is there any way to dim them even further?
  • mpuzachmpuzach Member Posts: 635
I keep mine dimmed down and have absolutely no problems with them, even in dark areas.
  • bobj14bobj14 Member Posts: 8
I wish I had found your post before I posted mine (Dec 6/07). I recently leased a 2008 SF Limited and also find the blue displays far to bright in country driving. I didn't know it was so bright because when I test drove it at night it was in the city and tested it in the country during the day. I can accept the brightness at night in the city, it's only in the country when it is completely dark out that it becomes a problem. Have you found a solution to the problem?
  • jackcobjackcob Member Posts: 13
I agree re the distraction of the blue lights at night. I apply some strips of window darkening film to the blue areas when I drive at night. If it's a cloudy day you don't have to remove them during the day as you can read the info thru the strips, but on a bright day I just peel them off and keep them in a compartment.
I think the Sante Fe is a great car. I've had it for about 5 months and have almost 12,000 miles and no complaints.
