You can also roll them down by inserting the key into the driver's door handle and unlocking your CX-9 and holding it in that position for a second or so, and you can roll them up by locking it and holding it in that position as well. Just an FYI

I am so frustrated! I loved my Mazda 09 CX9 up until months ago when I noticed a rhythmic rubbing noise when in park....especially at stop signs, stop lights, basically when the car is on and in park or in drive with the foot on the brake (where it is even louder). I can even hear on a loud rainy day. The other day I was next to a loud truck and I was still able to hear the consisten noise...around and around. I was told after several attempts to have it fixed it might be the intake manifold after Mazda's regional engineer came to check it out. Since it's not a mechanical issue I don't know how much more Mazda will do to help. We are in duscussion as to what to do next. I used to have a 2007 CX9 that I leased and I loved it so much that when the lease was up we bought the 2009 CX9. I could have been a sales person for Mazda as I was so excited describing how much I loved my car when strangers or friends would ask me about it. Now this noise is driving me nuts. It's like sleeping in quiet neighborhood and waking up in the city. It wasn't there before so obviously something is going on. I was told it may be normal haromonic noise but a mechanic friend of mine got in the car and the first thing he commented on was what a loud car it was. If it were a normal harmonic noise why did it just recently start happening? He did hear the noise and can't believe it would be an intake manifold. Mazda replaced one off a 2010 car on the lot but there is no difference. My mechanic friend says it's probably in the engine. Do I push for the engine to be replaced? If this rotational rubbing noise wasn't so annoying I would be 100% satisfied with the car. Help?????
  • cericceric Member Posts: 1,092
    Insist on getting it fixed.
It is under warranty. You have all the rights.

That said, it could be many many reasons for the noises.
I doubt it is that hard to pin down if it even happens in idle.

My guess could be the timing chain rubbing. Misaligned timing chain could create loud noises. That is just one of many guesses I could give you. Ultimately, find a dealer (or another one). If no help, call MazdaUSA. Corporate Mazda is one of the most helpful automakers I know. Their dealers, however, is just average.

Well, the surgery for the relays went well. Only thing was I wasn't the surgeon on the case. I cannot tell a lie as much as I wanted the vision to be a woman not afraid to get her nails dirty or broken!! I wasn't afraid to, as I do quite a bit of stall mucking and working around horses. But I went to have my oil changed and when I told them about the TSB, they took care of it. Plus they even replaced my gas cap which somehow I managed to cut the plastic hanger oner off of. Sometimes it feels good to be a damsel in distress!!

I know my next thing is new tires...that I will definitely leave for the boys!!

Thanks again for your help!! :)

This morning I took my CX9 into my local dealership to have the issue looked at, since I received the recall letter from Mazda. The dealership replaced the harness and said that was all that was needed to be done. (Whole unit did not need to be replaced)

I bought a brand new CX-9 2009 last August. After 350 miles, problems started. The car felt as if the clutch disc was worn, and I had to step on the gas to gain power, with the engine roaring like crazy. This happens when the car is level, and has nothing to do with going up a mountain as was described earlier.

I took it back 2 times to the dealer, Southern States Mazda in Wake County, NC and asked for a replacement. The sales team gave me all sorts of excuse, and were very much indifferent. The mechanic informed me that there was a problem, but he could not identify it. He reinstalled the transmission software, but in vain. Finally, they brought a Mazda specialist who said that the car was within specs.

The problem is that the car sometimes drives normally and the problem just disappears. I took the car to another dealer in Durham who are more friendly and professional, but could not replicate the problem.

Anyone experienced the same problem? any suggestions?

    Thanks a million!

You probably have a bad transmission or bad temp sensor for the transmission,
Anyway, if one can't reproduce the issue, one can't fix it.
No one is going to give you a new car. No one will give you a new transmission w/o evidence that it is shot. That is the way it is.
The transmission is supplied by Aisin who also supply transmissions to Lexus.
So far, I have only heard of another transmission issue from a guy in Maxico.
CX9 don't have many transmission issue as far as I know.

I have the same problem with the 4th and 6th gears in my 2008 cx9. Mazda told me the noise is something they have seen in some cars and there is nothing they could do. I fell unsafe driving this car. I feel that the driver shaft is going to fall off anytime. The mechanics at Mazda heard the noise and they don't think I am just complaining. My Mazda has a 19K miles.
  • cericceric Member Posts: 1,092
You should call MazdUSA and complain about it.
MazdaUSA is much more helpful than HondaUSA or ToyotaUSA.

It is still under powertrain warranty if I am not mistaken.

Ok so today I drove to work everything was fine. When leaving i tried getting into the car but my Keyless entry system was not working. So I had to take the key out and unlock the door manually. I then started the car and started driving and my TCS Off came on, the traction control light, the BSM light, the oil light, the key light and my turn signals were not working. Then I drove to the dealership. While driving there the lights would go off and my turn signals would go on. Then signals would go off and all the lights would go on again. Once at the dealership I needed to get some stuff out of the trunk but the locks were not working. So I manually opened back seat and had to climb over to get things out.

Besides all of this I too have terrible tires. They need to be replaced and I only have $20,000 miles on the car. I have skidded into curbs during the winter to avoid hitting cars since it would not stop.

After today, not sure i feel so safe driving this car with my kids in it. Hopefully they find a fix. This is the SECOND time the TCS light has been coming on also. So if it happens a 3rd time i'll be working towards that lemon law.

Has anyone else had this type of electrical problem. Hopefully they find the problem and its not too serious.
  • cericceric Member Posts: 1,092
It sounds like you have a occasional short in electrical system somewhere.
There is a known problem with the 12V power socket inside the console.

    Tire? 20K is about average.
I couldn't wait to get rid of the lousy tires from Mazda.
BTW, same tires can be found on Toyota Highlander. Just FYI.
Try Yokohama Spec-X. You will not regret it.
  • ozeyozey Member Posts: 18
I have 18K and I need new tires. Also, sometimes my windows open and close by themselves, but I can't replicate at the dealer. I am thinking of trading my CX9 with a more reliable similar style car, any suggestions?
  • tomhawk1tomhawk1 Member Posts: 12
Well, Mazda called the problem is a bad Body Control Module. Hopefully this fixes it. I do plan on replacing these terrible tires. I plan on getting the yokohama parada's. I am hoping since the snow is gone though to get a few more months with the current ones and then adding the new ones come fall.
  • jcpharmjcpharm Member Posts: 92
you will have to look up their reliability ratings but the usual players in this segment are Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Acura MDX, Ford Flex, GM Lambda SUVs (Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave). Too bad about your CX-9...perhaps it was a lemon. mine has been trouble-free since purchase last year.
  • wdhytewdhyte Member Posts: 92
what's this about a known problem on the 12V console outlet ceric? first I've heard of this...I've used it a couple times and didn't have issues. is there a doc/TSB on it or anything? TIA...Dave

Check your METER fuse (fuse 4 10A). It is located in the fuse box behind the glove compartment, it used for turnsignal, keyless entry, AWD, headlight, instrument cluster etc. It might not be located correctly or have a bad contact.Maybe replace with another fuse.
  • ozeyozey Member Posts: 18
Well, I drove the 2010 CX9 today. No transmission noise with the 4th and sixth gears at all. I wonder why mine has it (2008 CX9). The warmer the car the noisier it gets. It sounds like I have a flat tire, drive-shaft noise or metal on metal noise. Not sure what to do next?

Just realized I am having the same problem with my 2010 CX9. Sure wish I did not have to deal with the San Bernardino dealer. Their service dept is horrible! Perhaps I will try a different mazda dealer and will not be asked to leave my car there (without a loaner) alllllll day for a 30 minute fix like with the rearview mirror on my 07 CX9. But I DO LOVE my car!!! :)

Does anyone have an experience when you make a left turn, that the AC sounds like it is getting louder until you complete the turn? It does not happen on right turns. thanks

I have a 2009 Mazda CX-9. Two days ago while I was at work - the car was locked and turned off - the 2 front windows rolled down and the sunroof was open. They were all closed when I went into the building & down when I came out 1 hour later. I called the dealer & he had never heard of it. Said I could bring it in & they would see if they could find out anything. Over the weekend, it has not happened again. I'm not sure if I should take it in or wait to see if it happens again. I have had the car for 10 months & this is the first time this has happened.
  • davichodavicho Member Posts: 190
Which San Bernardino dealer are you talking about? California I take it correct? If so, there is no San Bernardino delaer anymore. It used to be Center Chevrolet and Mazda, they closed about 2 years ago and then it was San Bernardino Mitsubishi-Mazda and they closed about 6 months ago. Try Tom Bell's Redlands Auto Plaza formerly known as Redlands Auto Center, Riverside Mazda, or Romero Hyundai-Mazda in Ontario, CA

Personally my best experience has been with Romero Hyundai-Mazda in the Ontario Auto Center.

    Denver10,
    Have you tried this?
Press the unlock buttom from the remote (SmartKey or not). Press it again.
Now press again and hold it, you will see the both front windows roll down and moonroof roll backward. This is a feature that is less know to people who don't read manual completely (which is 99% of the owners).

What I am saying is that, was there any chance that your remote was pressed unknowingly at least 3 times while you were very close to your vehicles? (such as you sitting on it etc.) ;)

Your front windows and moon roof will open if you press and hold down the "unlock" button on your remote. You must have held it too long. Your dealer should have mentioned this feature to you.

To be sure, go and try it. I bet your front windows and moon roof will open!

My 09 Sport seems to keep blowing air from the rear vents even if I turn off the rear controls on the dashboard. If anyone can confirm they had the same issue or if that's the way it's supposed to work I'd sure appreciate it.

    Thanks!
  • cericceric Member Posts: 1,092
There is a TSB for it.
The relays need to be replaced.
Search for that. It only cost a few dollars and you can DIY.
If under warranty, dealer should be able to do that on the spot.
Most dealers should be aware of this issue.
  • k1200k1200 Member Posts: 40
Oh yeah....been through that...many, many times.... and they replaced the relays, I gave up on after numerous issues, and having the dealership act as if I was the problem. Mine was an 07 CX9 . If I remember correctly I had mine in the shop 13 times in about an 8 or 9 month period.. I really liked that vehicle, but I seemed to spend more time in their filthy loaners...never again
  • cericceric Member Posts: 1,092
    k1200,
Do you still have the CX9? Seems not.

Anyway, 2007 was the 1st year model.
Like any vehicle of 1st year, it has more issues than later ones.
The list of TSBs also confirms my point. Longest for 2007.

    For me, 2+ year of owning a 2008 CX9 GT AWD + Moonroof + NAVI with 29K,
only 1 issue with window failing to roll down due to insufficient glue at factory.
Took care of that at oil change.
Either I was extremely lucky or you were extremely the opposite.

ConsumersReport shows that CX9 is a very reliable vehicle overall.
    (mostly red dots, not black)
My guess is that you were the unlucky one.

Personally, I would avoid all 1st year model even for a Toyota or Honda.
  • k1200k1200 Member Posts: 40
You are right about it was the 1st year for that...and I kind of expected some issues...that goes for any new model .
And I will not bad mouth them or bash them, I have driven RX7 and a few other models and they were great, and a lot of fun.
My CX9 was actually fun to drive , but I guess the bugs had to be worked out...Quick story....the day I took delivery...nice new car smell the works...jumped in with my wife and drove off. She took a CD out of her bag for the ride....pressed the CD button, waited to say "IN", tried to put the CD in, won't go....hmmm pulled over to take a closer look. AH Ha ! there is a CD player, they forgot to cut the slot so you can insert it... ..I said "I dont think this car is done yet" X-D

You know, a lot of customers' dissatisfaction about an automobile was caused by lousy dealers, not the automaker itself. The dealer may be incapable of repairing or diagnosing issues properly and quickly. The dealer could fail to prep a new vehicle before delivery to customers. Those are issues caused by dealers. Mazda is not very outstanding in this area. My favorite dealer is superb, however. My nearest one is not.

US laws on automobile is structured in such a way that the automakers have very little control over how their dealers conduct business other than some forms of reward system.

A great vehicle needs a great dealer to support it. Any brand of vehicles have their share of issues. Some may have less than others. I own my vehicles for 7-8 years typically. I usually expect 1 or 0 problem with them. Other than the infamous BMW I once owned, of course.

    P.S. I don't buy 1st year model, ever. :)
  • ozeyozey Member Posts: 18
    Agree.
Some dealers are lazy and don't care. I wish Mazda will do something about it.

We have a 2008 CX-9 Grand Touring and just recently when we shut off the vehicle the A/C comes on full blast for about 2 minutes.

Has anyone experienced this with their CX-9 and what did you do about it? I know I can take it to the dealer, but if it something simple and a DYI then I would prefer to do that.

    Thanks for the help.

I bought a 2010 CX-9 SPORT FWD, and so far everything seems OK except for the wind noise that keeps coming from the driver window and (possibly) from passenger side as well.

I usually notice this sound when I drive above 40-50 mph. It seems like the noise is coming from the top of the window. I don't feel any air coming inside though. I took it to the dealer today and they are saying that everything seems OK. Just to check, my dealer let me drive another CX-9 Sport but I heard the same wind noise from driver side. I am trying to ignore it as much, but it is just freaking me out whenever I go above 50 mph. I am not sure what do to do. Has anyone experienced something like this? I have roof rails as well, but that much noise can not be just because of roof rails?

    Please help :(

I had the same issue with my '08 GT.

It is caused by faulty relay switches. It also happens with the rear unit too. There is a TSB on it. I brought it to the dealer and they replaced them.

Here is the response that I got from someone on the forum:

TSB applies to both front and rear blowers, they both have the exact same faulty relay (black). If dealer does not want to cover it, then just buy two relays (one for front and one for rear blower) and install them yourself. They are very affordable and easy to install. The updated relays are light blue in color.

    Part number #G115-67-730
  • nubgngnubgng Member Posts: 6
    Thanks horseygirl,

Glad to know that it is something that is correctable. Thought it might be related to the internal computer.

By the way, what is this TSB you mentioned? Not up to date with the lingo. I'm taking my car in to my mechanic tomorrow and he has a friend over at the Mazda dealership he'll consult with.

I'll pass on the info to him. What was the cost of the relays and did you have to order them or go to the dealer and buy the part?

    Thanks for all your help.

Oh, do you know if they are still honoring the recall they had for the inside front door handles where they were replacing them because they were easily scratched?

I already know about the recall for the possible "runaway" driver's seat. :)
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
A TSB is a Technical Service Bulletin.

It is an notice advising the dealer of information. It may detail an issue such as these relays or it could be something as simple as information on a new tool that will make a repair easier.

They are not recalls but may be issued in conjunction with recalls.
  • davichodavicho Member Posts: 190
    TSB 07-008/09

If you are still under warranty, Mazda will honor this TSB. Otherwise buy the realys (usually in stock) for about ~$12 a piece and install them yourself. The relay box is located on the driver side nearest to the fender and the firewall. It is a long slim black box. if you open it and turn it over, there is a schematic naming the relays. Remove the old (black) realys and replace with new (light blue) relays in the two spots marked as front blower and rear blower.

    Good luck!
  • nubgngnubgng Member Posts: 6
Thank you robr2 and davicho. Really great information. I'll be sure to get this squared away.

    Enjoy your weekend.

purchased a 2010 AWD Touring in pearl white about a month ago and I noticed that the paint chips easily... I've already seen a couple of spots - tiny dots - by rear door (driver side).

    Anyone else have this issue?
  • ozeyozey Member Posts: 18
Funny, I just got back from the dealer. The paint on my hatchback door was bubbling. The dealer said he will see to replace the bubbling piece, under the warranty. According to Mazda, you have 5yrs/unlimited M on corrosion. However, the corrosion should be from the inside out. Call Mazda service hotline. I have a 2008 CX9 GT.

    Hi all
I do not think this is a problem, but nevertheless I wanted to ping the experts on this forum to see what they feel. Please bear with me while I describe what took place.

I-80 near the border of NJ and PA is not flat terrain - there are plenty of gradients with successive uphill/downhill stretches. Was going downhill on one such stretch at 70mph. Took my foot off the gas pedal, but the gradient was steep enough to overcome natural engine braking and so the car began to accelerate towards 75mph. At this time I applied the brakes lightly to slow it down. What happened next was unexpected.

I slowed till about 67 - 68 mph and the car was still in 6th gear but at that instant for some reason CX9 decide to downshift directly to 4 (yes 4, not even 5). The engine which was at around 1900 rpm revved to 3000 and the car slowed rapidly to 60mph.

Needless to say, this phenomenon does not happen when the brakes are applied at 70 mph on a flat terrain.

Is there any specific reason why the car downshifted to 4 from 6 ? My guess is when I applied the brakes at about 72 - 73 on the slope, the CX9 "assisted" my manual braking by downshifting, and it did that because of the gradient. But why move to 4 and not 5 ?

I am not new to engine braking concept but IMO an automatic transmission should not jump from 6 to 4 at speeds greater than 65mph. It causes un-necessary stress on the engine (in this case 1900 to 3000 rpm)

    Ceric any thoughts here ?

    thanks
  • davichodavicho Member Posts: 190
Normal operation of this very sophisticated 6-speed transmission in our CX-9s. The transmission gets input from different sensors (i.e. Yaw, Speed, ABS, etc.) and if it detects that the vehicle is in a slope gaining speed and you are pressing the brake to slow it down. it will automatically downshift to help you slow down with engine brake. The fact that it jumps into 4th instead of 5th is just programming software that has been uploaded to the parameters in the ECM. The same way it will downshift itself from 3rd right down to 1st when coming to a near solid stop. Mine does that also when going home and going through a small hillside road.
  • cericceric Member Posts: 1,092
If the transmission always follows the sequence 6->5->4, then I would call it "stupid". An adaptive transmission is smart enough to make the decision by itself based on inputs of many sensors. Sometimes it may surprise you (like in your case), but it mostly does a decent job. Besides, it "learns" your driving style. If you mostly drive mildly, and decide to "gun it", you will get slow response from it. This may be good or bad depending on your angle.

It the transmission "always" jump over 5th gear, then, it calls your attention. ;)

I don't know whether or not the mazda cx9 engine is the same as the cx7 but there are a lot of people with major problems with the cx7 and are having to replace the engine at anywhere from 30 to 80,000 miles. I am one of them. I supplied Mazda with oil change receipts reflecting great service on this car and they refuse to help us in any way. We on the cx7 forum are exploring the possibility of a class action suit against these people. If you are interested in this please forward your e mail address to me:

Well, I used to love this car. Now not so sure.

The tires are crappy. Were bad by 18,000 miles.

3/5/10 - TCS light and brake light keep going on and off. Cause: install brake master cyclinder and brake booster.

4/28/2010 - Next all the dash lights starting going on and off. It was the BCM. This caused the TCS light, Brake light, oil light all to go on and off while driving. All power in the car was inoperable. The whole car just started doing weird things. I felt completely unsafe driving.

5/13/2009 Next both remote keyless entries stopped working and doors would not lock. Apparently their was a poor connection in wire harness. Waited a week for part and finally got it fixed.

6/5/2010 Then car got sent home and same day I noticed the horn does not work. Tried new fuse and no luck. So now it goes back on monday again.

This car has serious electrical issues.
  • jcpharmjcpharm Member Posts: 92
you should check if the lemon law applies.
  • cericceric Member Posts: 1,092
It seems to me all the problems you ran into are all "related".
The dealer was not capable of isolating the problem precisely.
I suggest you change a dealer. Lemon law only applies to the same problem that the dealer can't fix for three times and it has to be safety related.

    Crappy tires are well-known.

    No. CX7 has I4 turbo.
Someone keep telling me that modern turbos are very reliable....guess not.

    CX9 has V6 (a variant from Ford's duratec 3.5).

Recently had wierd electrical problems with remote entry device, turn signals not working, internal electric locks not working, dashboard lights (TCS Off, Brake, door ajar, oil indicator), lights going on while parked in garage that drained my battery.

Took the car to the dealer and they determined my Body Control Module (BCM) has water damage caused from clogged drains from the sunroof. The sunroof has drains going down front window side frames down to the bottom of chasis. The drains clogged and water leaked on BCM. The BCM replacement is $650 and cleaning the drains is $114 for total of $774!

The dealer told me that the drains need to be maintained. I asked if the instructions are in the manual and they stated that the manual DOES NOT have directions to clean and maintain the drains.

Anyone else have this issue and know how to clean the sunroof drains?
