I'm in Camas and have a GREAT Volvo guy, but if you want to file a claim, you need to go to a dealership. I'm interested to hear what happens- good luck!

    G'day from WA!

Yesterday (NYE) the wife's 2004 XC90's transmission gave up the ghost and on her first call to Barbagello Volvo they said it was likely it would require a new box - $8000 and a two week wait. Pretty severe over the phone diagnosis for a problem that doesn't exist.

Could xc90volvomum or agitlits post details of their contact within Volvo Australia to start talking about getting some "good will" assistance with the repair. I'm not expecting to pay nothing but there does appear to be a case to be answered.

Disappointed - I work away and reliability was a big factor in buying a Volvo for a family car.

    Thanks, Marty.

    Hello Marty,

I'm really sorry to hear about your problem. I haven't had the same one with my XC90 T6 yet, but probably is only a matter of time!

I am so paranoid about this problem that I emailed Volvo Australia in advance to see what I should do *if* the problem should occur with my car. Anyway, I just emailed general Volvo customer hotline which was owners@volvo-customers.com.

I can forward to you their exact response, if you like. Just drop me a line at agitlits@gmail.com

Their response was that each "Good Will" assistance case is considered on a case-by-case basis. This, I presume, means the service history of your vehicle, etc. However, the response was in August 25 and I suspect that they may have become more lenient since there is now a pending class action in the USA regarding this exact matter.

What I would do first if I were you is to lodge case with Volvo Australia and then they will tell you to take the vehicle to the dealership for proper diagnosis. I suspect there will be at least partial assistence from Volvo Australia.

Please email me if you want the exact response and also to talk about it.

Please, also let me know how you go as I am really interested in the outcome.

    Best wishes,

    Alex

Glad to hear about your miracle. My 2004 XC90 T6 transmission just failed (I assume) on Thursday. I have not contacted anyone yet over this long holiday weekend. I am in the Portland OR area. After reading this website, I assume that I should contact the nearest Volve dealer for help first.

My 2003 XC90 T6 has started to skip like the transmission is slipping when I accelerate is this a sign the transmission is starting to go out?

    Hi jimxc90,

Sounds like it. Did the Service transmission light come on?

I too have begun to experience transmission issues - 2004, XC-90 T-6 AWD with 86,000 miles - while the car accelerates and appears to go through the gears, it presents a loud "racing sound" that gives the impression it is still in a lower gear - as if you were in second gear but still traveling at 60 mph.
Can any one share experiences with pursuing this with the dealer and what was most successful...Thanks so much,
    Mike

    HI,

Welcome to the unfortunate club known as the XC 90 transmission failures.

First, complain to Volvo and put it in writing-can do it online.
Second, same thing to the NTSB.
Third, online complaint to your state's Atty General
Fourth, online complaint to your state's Consumer Protection.

Then let Volvo know all the people you are complaining to as this shouldn't have happened and you are fully aware Volvo is replacing these transmissions and radiators, including cooling lines for free.

See how that works, and keep us posted on your progress! Best of luck!
So far, this has worked for eleven people, and myself as well!

I have a 2005 XC90 T6. Recently it was smoking from the tailpipe and I took it to the Volvo dealership and they replaced the breather box. It still smoked when I brought it home so they said it was the turbo and replaced it. About one week later the "service transmissioin urgent" light came on. I took it to another volvo specialist and the reset the light and changed the transmission fluid. I brought it home and about 2 weeks later while driving it lost power and the "service transmission urgent" light came on and now the car smokes and has no power. Any suggestions about these transmissions or these problems?
  • premachpremach Member Posts: 2
I experienced the same problem 3 weeks ago with transmission warning, and now it's at volvo dealer for transmission replacement. I took the matter up to Volvo Canada for free replacement as there is a manufacturing defect with these T6 models, which volvo does not want to agree, but as per volvo technicians it is a manufacturing defect. I am now waiting for their decision and will post the outcome.

My personal recommendations that have worked for myself and many others in this thread are as follows:

    Contact the NTSB-again online
File an email complaint with your state's Attorney General
File an email complaint with your state's Consumer Protection
Mention this website and how Volvo has done "Goodwill" transmissions to others.

    Good luck!

Ok, following up as promised...I'm pretty satisfied with the way Volvo handled the case. Guys from the service took one day to check everything and of course transmission was broken, same case as alll others. Because of holidays it took them long time to get approval, total I was 14 days without my car, but I excuse them for that. Once the dealer got approval from headquater on Friday. Tuesday my car was rady. They replaced tranny and radiator. I'd say everybody makes mistakes, as long as they fix them it's fine. I love the car itself, I guess I'll stick with Volvo.

That's great news! Did you buy the car new?

I too have a 04 XC90 Turbo with about 90,000. A week ago the Transmission Service Urgent light came on while I was driving home. I got home and started researching online, found this site and was shocked to learn the massive costs associated with this problem.

On Monday morning I took my car to the dealer. When I arrived I told them that the light came on, and that I had researched the issue online, and asked the tech what the process was for working with Volvo on this issue. He said that we needed to see what was wrong, and then we could make a plan.

Five hours later he called me and told me that yes my transmission needed to be replaced, but he had contacted volvo and they were going to pay for the entire thing, but he couldn't get the part for a week or so. The car was running fine, and he told me I could come get it until the parts came in.

I took the car in yesterday and got it back today. They replaced the transmission, radiator, aux cooler lines and upgraded tcm. The total cost to me was 0 dollars. I did have to pay for a rental car, and I did ask them to do an oil change which I paid for.

My dealership here in Minneapolis was great to work with. I purchased this car used, not from the dealer. I have had some work done at the dealer, but I have had work done other places too. I do not have a Warranty.

If you have any questions please let me know. I was so scared at the thought of $9000 into a car that I bought because I thought it would last forever. I have new faith in Volvo.

My concern here is if the transmission goes out again (may be in next 2 or 3 years) will Volvo be kind in enough to chip in? In my case I had to ~$1300 for labor,
  • jbs05jbs05 Member Posts: 13
That would be great to know. I asked that earlier in this thread and did not hear of anyone who has had it go out twice. My first one was under warranty in October. I am dreading a second one going out. Maybe since it will then be out of warrranty, they will pay for mine, if pushed.

Anyone have it go the second time and have it paid for? And, on the second time, about how many miles did you have in between breakdowns?
  • agitlitsagitlits Member Posts: 7
The amount of 'good will' seems to vary greatly depending on where you are.

I have an XC90 which I bought used with 69,000 km on it. My research showed that my vehicle had the original transmission replaced at 48,000 km. So I'm currently on my second transmission. I doubt it will be the last one.

Someone I know who lives in Australia like me just had the transmission fail on his XC90 T6. He was not the original owner. Volvo Australia flatly refused to contribute anything because he is not the original owner! In the US, it seems, different rules apply, presumably due to the class action being close to resolution by the courts.

Volvo Australia said that because his car is out of warranty and he purchased it used he cannot expect Volvo to fix it at their expense and they also mentioned that they cannot predict the durability of each single component in their cars which is BS as transmission units are supposed to be reasonably durable!

    Good luck

The transmission in my 2005 XC90 has been "slipping" since July! I have taken it to me Volvo dealership and they confirm that it is slipping in low gear but they say they can't do anything until the system shows a failure "code". Has anyone heard of Volvo fixing a car before the transmission failure code shows up? We all know it's going to happen....I just don't want to be stranded somewhere with my 4 year old in tow!
  • jbs05jbs05 Member Posts: 13
Yes, I took mine in prior to the light coming on BUT mine was under warranty. So that may be the difference. I took it in for something else and and mentioned that the car was slipping. He said he would take a look and "run it through some tests." I don't know what the tests were but next thing I know I was getting the transmission replaced.
  • jeannielenorejeannielenore Member Posts: 1
I have an '05 Volvo XC90 with almost 80k miles. The "check engine" light came on and I took it to my local mechanic and he diagnosed "turbo" failure and said he thought Volvo would cover that....
Took the car to Volvo and they diagnosed it with....transmission failure.
I have had to get a new transmission and it was difficult to get them to agree to pay for it because I had had all my "work" done elsewhere.
They are paying for the transmission, but after looking at all the others in the same situation this car is soon to be sold....with a new transmission.

My new 2010 Volvo XC90 has a similar problem. I have now driven about 1,800 miles. PROBLEM: From stop the transmission "slips" as I accelerate, then shifts into higher gear and all is fine. This happens every time I start from stop. The service rep & head of service dept. says it is normal..and I was told the transmission is computer controlled and needed to adjust to my driving habits. I am a BIT doubtful.

Another problem is the annoying engine vibration when I am in stopped at a light or stop sign. The engine vibrates slightly until I accelerate then runs smoothly. Again I was told that this is normal. Again, I don't think so.

    Any thoughts?
  • jbs05jbs05 Member Posts: 13
I am sorry to hear this but am concerned because ever since I received my new transmission, this has been occuring (see earlier posts). I had not heard of anyone else having this problem on this board.

Though I have brought it back to Volvo three times for this and have had two ride-a-longs with Volvo mechanics, they continue to tell me that is the computer that controls the shifting. They can not change it since it is set at the factory. They told me my only work-a-round was to shift the car manually if I didn't like it. Great!

Here's just another Volvo XC90 I can add to the list that's had horrible transmission issues. I bought my 2003 XC90 T6 in April of 06. Five months later, the transmission needed replaced with only about 35,000 miles. Luckily it was under warranty at the time. Fast forward to January 2010 about a week and a half ago. My 'service transmission required' light comes on, so I take it to Volvo dealership to get checked out. Said the seal that connects to bevel gear is damaged and will also need a new transmission as well....if I pay $8000!! It has 104000 miles on it now...just 4000 over my warranty go figure! The fact that Volvo discontinued that certain model because of this issue and didn't take the responsibility to have a recall for it angers me to no end. Volvo should be ashamed of theirselves for making such crappy, unreliable cars and then not take responsibility for manufacturing errors. I have always gotten regular maintance done on it as required at a Volvo dealership. Not to mention, I've had to take that thing in about every 3 to 4 months for numerous other issues for things that needed fixed. I can guarantee that I nor anyone in my family will every own another Volvo
  • billymac6billymac6 Member Posts: 2
Has anyone with a new 2010 Volvo XC90 had problems with transmission slipping at beginning acceleration from stop?

The dealer says this is normal...hmmm.
and the vibration while brake stopped with motor running?...hmmmm

I have taken my XC90 in 4 times now with the urgent transmission service light the dealer has reset the light a couple times and once did a computer update saying the computer just needed updating. Two days ago I picked it up after the computer update and drove it maybe 10 miles and same things happened again with the transmission service light coming on and slipping out of gear from a stop and I took it straight back to the dealer. The mechanic took it for a drive told me it was unsafe and said now they will contact Volvo. I am now waiting for a decision from Volvo to see what they decide.
  • joeiwmsjoeiwms Member Posts: 10
I posted a couple of time stating my transmission failure and this last time I took my XC90 in the dealership said they would contact Volvo now and see what they would do regarding paying for the transmission. I just heard from the dealer and Volvo said they would pay for half which results in me paying $2700.00 Would anyone please let me know if they would settle for this or would try to get Volvo to pay for the entire transmission.
    Thanks
  • jnjdennisjnjdennis Member Posts: 3
This is exactly what happened to me. The entire time I remained calm and pleasing to both Volvo and the dealership. After I was offered half of the repairs I contacted me rep at Volvo corporate and asked how the decision was made. I explained to her thar I was very aware of them taking care of many identical transmission problems at 100 percent. Basically I just acted appreciative of what they had offered but how the decision was made.

Volvo corporate called back the next day and said to just take the car into our local Volvo dealership and they would take care of 100 percent of the transmision replacement as well as the axle and anything else involved.

I need help. My beloved suv that I bought almost 2 yrs ago decided to stranden me on the side of the road a week ago. Prior to this I started to hear a noise in the motor (so I thought) the week prior, the vehicle didn't have as much power and I was going through the gas something terrible. It was just starting to feel like something was almost slipping once in awhile, but nothing major and it didn't happen all the time. All of a sudden it felt like something just gave away and then the grinding started. Pulled over and put it into Park and that's how it went downhill from there. So, here are my questions. Isn't there some sort of 100k warranty on the motor or transmission on these vehicles, considering the "High Quality" vehicle they are suppose to be? Is there anything I can go or get from a Volvo dealer to help pitch in on the Outrageous cost it will take to repair it? I only have 95k miles on the darn thing and had it less than 2 years now. Honestly, this is a bunch of garbage. I'm without a vehicle and don't have the $6500-$8000 to fix it right now...who does? Looking for any advice from anyone. Thanks for listening.

I own a '03 T6! I replaced the tranny at 43k miles in '07. I just replaced the tranny again this past week at 84K miles. The first replacement they did for me was a nightmare! They fought me hard on it and ended up paying for half of the total replacement cost. This past week when I had it replaced the guys at Ken Garff (Jon Mayer, parts Manager) were super good about replacing it. Not only did they replace the tranny but they also replaced the radiator as well as a number of smaller things at no cost to this Cat!
My initial contact with them the second time around was much more pleasant than the first time. All in all, I'm pretty sure Volvo is very aware of the faulty GM tranny they put in the T6's. The guys at Ken Garff told me they were going to recalibrate the software for the torque that the T6 puts out in attempt to reduce the wear and tear on the tranny.
I bought the Volvo because my wife is hauling my 3 young children around and I wanted to get her a solid and safe car. I was told the Volvo was bullet proof! After owning this XC90 I can honestly say I would be hard pressed to purchase another newer Volvo!
I think the domestic companies (Ford in this case) get their hands on the engineering and parts in the Volvo and the car goes to crap. If I wanted domestic, I would have purchased a Jeep! But, I think they know that. That is why they are mucking up what the Swedes did pretty well.
My other ride is a Jeep. I am a patriot, just please let the Swedes continue on with their parts and design of a great car.

    Cheers!

I'm so sorry to hear of your disaster! It sounds to me like the tranny went out and could have therefore seized the engine. Were you traveling at high speeds when this all happened? Was the tachometer registering at above normal RPM's when you were driving steady? If it started because of the tranny, I would certainly get in touch with your local dealer and speak with them.

    Hi,

I'm from Asia and the local distributor is not supporting the replacement for the transmission for the T6 the way its unfolding in USA.

As precautionary measure, I'm searching for rebuilders to supply rebuild kits and parts to strengthen the GM transmission found the the XC90 T6.

Anyone with contact or recommendations do drop me a message, many thanks!

We are having the same problem. I was wondering if you have a number for corporate. Our dealer is not willing to give anything like that out or work with us on the 2 transmission replacement cost, and they have been one's that have done all the repairs and maintenance on our car. Thank You for any help you can give us.
  • joeiwmsjoeiwms Member Posts: 10
The number for Volvo corporate is 1-800-458-1552. I hope this helps. I was told when you call to be nice and also say you would or plan to buy Volvo in the future. Otherwise if you are a dissatisfied customer and would never return to Volvo they are less likely to take you into consideration.
  • joeiwmsjoeiwms Member Posts: 10
Also make sure to let them know you have done ALL your maintenance with the dealer. They take that into consideration as well. Your dealer should have reported your problem to the local rep and they would take each case into consideration.

I just bought a XC90 t6 from a used car dealer. Three weeks later my transmission failed! I am so mad! I traded in a good running car and they gave me a car with a failing transmission. Three weeks after I bought it the service transmission light came on. Later that day the car started shuttering and 3rd gear would not engage. Now my car is sitting at the dealer, waiting for them to see what the problem is. I know it is the transmission and pray they fix it. I have a family of 7, 2 of witch are developmentally disabled that live in my home that I take care of. Now I have no way to take everyone out and hope that I do not loose my job over it. My heart goes out to all that have suffered the way I am at this time.

    Hi,

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Depending on the state you live in and the price you paid for it, there is a state law of a certain number of days of warranty-Connecticut is 30 or 60 days-again depending on the price and age of car-I believe.

There have been over a dozen of us that have professionally appealed to certain parties and thankfully received new transmissions at no cost. I'll hope the best for you and your family and if you look at my prior posts, I've outlined what you can do-as my goal is to empower others and hope Volvo helps us all.

Best of luck and feel free to reply should you need more help.
    Take care.

After reading countless posts regarding faulty, defective transmissions, it appears that they all seem to occur in 2005 and earlier modal years.

This would "square" with my understanding that Volvo redesigned the transmission for 2006 which corrected the earlier years inherent weaknesses.

The "track record" satisfaction reports for 2006 appear very good....look at Edmunds ratings which shows that transmissions get high marks or, at least, not a significant issue for 2006 .

Any knowledge or comment on this ?
    Thanks!

I was just wondering if you talked to Volvo corporate and was able to resolve anything yet? I hope they were willing to help pay for some of it.
  • laws65laws65 Member Posts: 69
I found out this is true. Volvo went back to improved to a six gear tronic, something like that-that could handle the tourque of this engine. They even have gotten rid of the turbo's in the v6's stating the car doesn't need it-wonder if that has to do with the standard transmission too.
Hopefully, if Volvo is smart, they are replacing ours with the newer version. I asked and the Volvo salesman didn't know.

    Billymac6,

Very interesting b/c I went to my local Volvo Dealer in CT, where I even worked as a teenager, trying to see what I could get on my 2005 XC90 for a trade in, based on the shape. I test drove the XC70 Cross Country Wagon, as I loved my old one. The transmission did the same thing. It was a V6, non turbo, as I was told it isn't standard anymore as they had too many problems with it. When I stepped on the gas, the car seemed to slip into gear at a higher than expected rpm. When I mentioned it to the salesman, he said, it's the way the newer transmissions are and I'm probably just used to my XC90 one now-what a joke. I'm beginning to wonder if once Volvo switched and switches over more and more of their parts to Ford the bigger the issues will be!
    Good luck!

Thank you for your post in response to my comment.
Actually, I have found my XC90 to be a terrific vehicle .... wonderful driving characteristics and, of course, the confidence of Volvo safety.
I have only had a few service issues - AWD loss and upper suspension arm replacement beside the typical tire wear,of course. (I am driving on Bridgestones after Pirelli and Michelins) I have also been careful to have tires rotated and balanced and periodic 4 wheel alignments which has really helped.
In sum, the XC90 is perfect for me in comparison to others.
Hope your expience, too, has been and continues to be a good one. :)

Sign me up for a Class Action!!! We purchased two 2004 XC90s and both have needed new transmissions. The first was covered under warrenty but the second car was not and the dealer fully acknowledges the large amount of transmission failures. Then top it off with the $750 bill just to diagnose the problem and then gave us a $10,000 estimate to repair. Since then I have been inquiring; if you own a 2003 or 2004 XC90 it has had the transmission replaced once or several times! The dealership told us our car was not driveable, "The engine was falling apart". They quoted the value of our car at $1,000-$2,000 in its current condition or $10,000 with repairs. That's the cost of their bill to fix it! I have since taken the car to other experts and had free estimates with a repair bill of $3600.

typical of volvo not to fess up... you need a new transmission
  • jbs05jbs05 Member Posts: 13
A friend convinced me to call corporate.

I did. This was over the problem of the "lock-up" when the car should shift from 3rd to second. This only started occuring after the "new" transmission in my car.

I was called back by my Volvo dealer and had another ride-a-long with the Mgr and head mechanic. The head mechanic knew the problem since he has driven with me previously. We were easily able to replicate the problem numerous times. They are now trying to see if this is happening on any other T6 xc90s. If they can't then my car will go in the shop for who knows how long. Luckily I get a loaner.

I have not heard on this board anyone else who has this problem.

    Hi -
I am new to this, and somehow could not find if anyone responded to your request for extended warranty info. I have a 2004 XC90 - 64k miles, and I too am thinking about buying an ext warranty. Any luck with advice? Volvo dealership quoted me yesterday a full coverage for $2422 - 3 yr, 36k, with $250 deductible . Sounds high, but I am not up on this subject!! Thanks so much

I just got my xc90 back from the dealer with a new tranny, radiator and connecting parts. I just had to pay a $600 "deductable" Just to let everyone know, I had just bought the car from a used car dealer and the tranny died 3 weeks later. I thought there was no way volvo would pay for it. I called my local dealer and at first they said they had not heard of volvo paying. I called up volvo NW headquaters, got my local service departments managers name and said they needed to cantact the regional service rep. Two days later they were putting new stuff in with just my $600 deductable. My car is a 2004 xc90 t6 with 86000K. It will be up for sale soon if anyone is interested. Come on it has a new and improved tranny!!! LOL Fight the power! Get them to cover it!

I wish I had seen this blog when I had to replace my 2005 XC90 T6 transmission. I did not take it to the dealership because of the cost and because it was out of warranty (72,000 miles). My volvo now has 90,000 miles and still shifts incorrectly, gets stuck in drive, which makes me force it into neutral (when stopped) so that I can then shift it in either park or reverse. I've also had the "engine service" message this blog has talked about and the many annoying noises. Has anyone else had the plastic on the sides of the seats crack and break off? And we aren't large people. These cracks rip pants and sweaters. This is first volvo I've ever owned and I guarantee the last! If I can only get rid of it. Everything is an expensive repair. And I too have to replace the tires way too frequently, and the brakes will break you! I did find the class action suit on the transmission, just google it and you will find the website for the lawyers email and phone numbers. I will be calling.
I'm so glad to know that my volvo isn't the only one with these problems, that I'm not the cause. These constant noises and creaks can make one wonder.
Volvo should have a longer warranty than 50,000 miles like everybody else.

Add me to the list of T6 owners with failed transmissions. Just bought our'03 XC90 T6 with 56K miles last month and 1700 miles later, Transmission Service Urgent. I probably had about 20-25 miles of it 'screwing up' before it gave out, but thanks to all of you (and the power of the internet) I knew I would be in BIG trouble if I didn't shell out the extra $3500 for the extended warranty which I have never done before.
Will update with how things go when I find out more!

104,000 miles. They want $6,600 to do trans, radiator etc. If it had happened at 99,999 they would pay 100% because they know this trans was faulty. Regional sales rep offered to pay $1000, leaving me only $5600. lol. At this point I'm going to have it towed to my house and leave it in my front yard with all the info I have so other buyers who stop and look see know not to buy Volvo. How does a vehicle sell for $45,000 die at 104,000 miles?
