    Hi,
The following has been unsuccessful: Flushed and change the power steering fluid, ruled out the fuel pump located just under the intake throttlebody. I've tentatively ruled out lifters, since the audio noise level does not increase when removing any valve cover openings (oil fill cap, PCV,etc) Just dropped all the skid pans, and the lower belt idle pulley located next to the alternator is wobbly when hand shaken. Now must wait for noise re-occurance to rule out the pulley. Will advise.

Update... ended up giving my POS Mitsubishi to my daughter to drive until she could use it as a trade in on something worthwhile. Never got the issue fixed after spending $1k on replacing sensors I gave up and just drove it in 3rd gear everywhere until I got a different vehicle. I KNOW it is an electrical problem. I have replaced the input sensor on the tranny twice and the output sensor once. I complained to the dealership and got a very nice letter back from the service manager basically asking me to bring it back to them and give them a blank check to work on it until they could find the problem! lol, yeah... NOT! Complained to Mitsubishi corporate... that just got me on their mailing lists for every local sale that comes around... again, NOT! I ended up buying a Nissan Rogue and LOVE IT!!! I'll NEVER buy another Mitsubishi!!!

Just wanted to say "thank you" to all who commented in this thread, you helped me fix a problem that two different mechanics could not find (not dealers). I have a 2000 Montero Sport, also had the 4x4 flashing then Antilock light. Tried shifting into 4x4 Low, worked for a moment, then back to the flashing.
I replaced the MR263723 Freewheel Clutch Valve, problem solved! Paid $89 for it at local Mitsu dealer. They actually had it in stock! Took about 45 min to change (I was being very careful with the hoses). I removed the top of the airbox, but not the bottom. That probably would have made it a little easier. I believe it was two 10mm bolts holding in place.

Andrewvw44's pictures helped greatly in locating it. Thanks!

    Thanks again all!

just a note even though this is an olr message. My daughters motero brake light used to come on whenever the temperature change several degrees. it usually required adding just a little brake fluid to make it go out.

2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport Check engine light was on long time, seems to have burned out, won't pass emissions, doesn't show READY to test, Need to replace bulb. How do I get to it? Already wasted tons of gas/miles driving thinking reset.

My 2001 with 173,00 seems to have a unique problem. After an extended period of high speed or highway driving and coming to a stop it does not want to take off. I let off the brake and it just sits there. Sometimes it will let go on its own and off I go. Other times I have to give it some gas and will let go more violently and chirp the rear tires and lurch forward and you can drive on. Sometimes it goes a week without it happening and sometimes it happens half dozen times a day. I had some speed sensors in it replaced at a local shop after they found some error codes for them. Also a filter and fluid change which turned up no pieces of metal in the fluid. They can not find anything else wrong with it less tearing the transmission open. I have explored for sticking brake calipers, e-brake and the rear end. These are fucntioning properly and have been serviced recently. 4x4 works and has been serviced also. Please help?

I am replacing my rear disc brakes on my 2001 Montero Sport 4WD. I have removed the caliper, but I cannot remove the pads due to the Pad Pins. How do I remove these pins so I can replace the pads? I have tried many things to remove them without any success. What do I need to do?

I have a 98 montero sport with 104k miles on it. Before the loud noise after start-up happened, the car had a slow acceleration and idled fairly rough at a red light. Two-Three weeks later, it is now making a really loud noise after start-up. It is not a rattleling noise, or maybe it's too loud to notice... i'm scared to drive the car around with that noise! Please Help! I had heard that the idle could be the catalytic converter, but how do i get rid of the loud noise (seems like it could be the engine or the exhaust?)

Thank you for your Help!! :)

i have a 2000 montero sport with 194k its been great to me over the last 10 years but
i just replaced spark plugs and valve cover gaskests and tube seals (found lots of oil in all the tubes) also sprayed 4 cans of throtlle body cleaner through the vb while it was off i also spayed a few cans of engin degreaser once it was all put back together and hosed it off started it up and it sounded fine as i backed out of the drive way i heard a light thumping sound that that only did it in reverse not in drive i couldnt find what it was so i contenuied on my road test then i got to the end of the block as i stopped i heard the thumping sound again (it kinda sounds like abs when you lock it up but i am fairly positive its not coming form the break system) about a mile down the raod i began to slow down and the nutural light started blinking and the trans seemed to be shifting funny chirping the tires then i was in fail safe it seems from what i have read its seems that the most common remedy is the speed sensors but it just seems kinda odd that it would happen right after i did the above stated work is there any thing that i may have done to cause it to go into fail safe? maybe a crossed vacuume hose? or a missed vacuume hose? the water when rinseing off the degreaser? o i also at one point set a scew driver down on the battery and it touched both posts causing some sparks? is there a way to test the speed sensors? i am trying to avoid paying a shop or the dealer to dignose it because i am just gonna replace it my self any way

I was wondering if you ever got a helpful answer to your rear brake pin question. I have tried unsuccessfully to do the same and still don't have them changed. Thanks.
  • awhite1awhite1 Member Posts: 1
Did you figure out what the problem was? I'm having the exact same issue and none of the shops can figure it out.
  • 98monterosport98monterosport Member Posts: 1
Catalytic Converter is what you're looking at fixing. You either can choose the inexpensive route and cut it off and welding pipe to connect the gap or get it replaced. Caution though, cutting it off will fail emmissions (if you have test in your town) and will be louder. But its up to you. I had the same problem. Oh and if you choose the cut it off option then your engine light will be on indefinately until catalytic converter is put back on.

Greetings everyone, last week my 2001 montero started to act up. I'm trying to diagnose this problem my self and get some advice from the some knowledgable montero owners, and rather than me describing the problem in detail, briefly I will let you know that the noise occurs when I first step on the brake pedal, once brake is held firm for example a red light the noise goes away, on the other hand, driving is as smooth as can be, but as soon as i put my foot on the brake the grinding and scraping noise comes back and here's a link to a video I made of what the problem sounds like, please if you know what this is your advice on going about fixing it without shelling out tons of money would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time.

Can you tell me the steps of how you removed and replaced the airbag...I have one on the way and need to know how to change it out without blowing up an airbag in my face..lol

I believe that first post might have been rather confusing here is a better video explanation:

Noise from engine when pressing on brake pedal:

    http://youtu.be/oTIzFqgxJs4

An interior view on what happens when I press on brake pedal:

    http://youtu.be/kpGB_Y083a0

This is what happens when I simultaneously press on the brake pedal:

    http://youtu.be/FSvuG4v3_qc

This is the cylinder that rattles when I brake, I'm assuming this is where the noise is coming from:

This is in your owners manuel. It says that when the N starts flashing that there is a transmission problem and it would be wise to take it to the nearest dealer..
  • beany11beany11 Member Posts: 1
I have the identical problem. I'm embarassed every time I take it to the transmission shop because they cannot get it to misbehave. Recently the 4x4 has been acting up and only likes to engage in warm weather - not helpful in the snow. Have you been able to resolve the problem?

I am having a problem I think. It feels like when my transmission goes into gear it feels like it is slipping. Is this a problem. I don't remember it doing this in the past. I have about 75,000 miles on it. Someone suggested that I pour two cans of carbueter fluid in it. Is this safe. Could it be a sensor?
  • shankapotamasshankapotamas Member Posts: 1
I have had this problem before and i may have a simple fix. Every time the 4x4 has acted up i took it to a car wash that had an undercarriage wash and it seemed to loosen up some gunk or dirt that may have been aroung the 4 wheel drive. Good Luck! If it isn's stored in a garage it may be cold so you could try to warm it up before shifting into 4 wheel drive.

its the transmission "fail safe relay" they mounted it upside down under right kick panel and contacts collect moisture and corrode $28
  • viking62viking62 Member Posts: 2
I had the same problem with 2001 Montero Sport ES 3.0L auto . Finally the engine light came on ,Neutral indicator on dash flashed code said tranny relay . I replaced the Transmission "fail safe relay" which is mounted upside down to collect moisture under the right kick panel . the car has never driven so good since i owned it. The relay contacts collect moisture and corrode because the A-holes mounted it upside down !!! $28 part will save your tranny!!!!

Did you ever get any answers on your "slipping" issue or find a resolution? I have the same make/model and am experiencing that same issue, when my transmission goes into gear it feels like it is slipping, it kinda jerks a little.

Hi, I'm a GM/Ford tech, Looking for some help. Read a few of the discussions and got some answers. However, this thing has some other issues. 1st: Oil Leak (lots of oil)- coming from what I beleive is the cam covers in the back of the heads. Normal??; 2nd: Battery light/Red brake light came on- Battery at 12.08 volts but not dropping off while running, load system down with lights, wipers, A/C, etc. only went down to 11.98 volts and held. Seems like alternator is trying. But not real sure.; 3rd: Engine Light on- P0421 Catalyst warm up- the cat is covered by oil (thinking oil may be leaking into it and burned it up), P0403 EGR Solonoid Circuit- Checke voltage and have 12 volts supplied, vacuum check moved EGR valve. Don't have a scan tool to activate the solonoid, do these commonly fail?? Looking for some help, Thanks in advance.

Hope this helps, gmguy18. God Bless

I just bought a 1999 Montero Sport (2wd automatic 3500 v6)and it is doing the same thing kelvagirl's was. It sounds like a rumble strip at around 42 mph or pulling a small grade. Seems like it doesn't know which gear to pick. I can drive through the rumble and everything seems ok. I can also eliminate it by dropping into 3rd.
I am curious if kevlagirl tried viking62's solution? I was thinking that it may be a clogged AT filter and weak fluid. But after reading so many posts it could also be the speed sensor or as viking62 states the fail safe relay(?). I am going to try the relay, filter and fluid flush. Hopefully I will be able to report back with results. It may not be immediately....

Viking62 I hope you get email notifications!!!! I cannot find a "fail safe" relay anywhere! Is there another name for this item or a part number that you may have?

I have a problem with my 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport brake system I hoped to get some help with. The brake system seems to work fine with transmission in forward but in reverse however, when backing VERY SLOWLY (as in parallel parking speed), there is sometimes a VERY loud sound (imagine a ship's fog horn) that seems to come from nowhere and continues until you stop the vehicle. I know what I describe sounds crazy but it's the best way I can characterize the sound.

I've had it into two different shops where they pulled the wheels and looked at the brakes and neither shop could find anything.

It's quite noticeable and even a bit embarrassing when backing the car. Given it's my wife's car, you might imagine what I'm going through... :-)

Did you ever find a part number for this? I went to the Mitsubishi Service center as well as the parts store and no one knows what a failsafe relay is.
  • misterv1misterv1 Member Posts: 3
I did not find any "fail safe" relay nor did the Mitsubishi parts guy know what I was talking about. I dug through what seemed like hundreds of similar forums and finally found where someone described the location, ' under the right side kick panel'. There are 2 relays there one is a fuel relay and the other the ECM {Auto-Zone Part Number: 20335 Alternate Part Number: 41-5355} for $32.00 at auto-zone and 3-4 days shipping since it's not a stock item. I replaced this relay. NO CHANGE IN ANY WAY TO MY PROBLEM  . I also took the Montero to a local Japanese auto specialist they said I needed to see a transmission specialist  .So I did some more research online and found a wondeful little product called Dr. Tranny

    http://www.lubegard.com/~/C-230/Dr.+Tranny+Instant+Shudder+Fixx

copy and paste that link, don't search for Mr. Tranny :surprise: LOL. I read many of the comments for Dr. Tranny and thought I'd give it a try. NAPA had it for $6.35, and just like all the reviews within 6 miles of driving the torque convertor shudder disappeared!!!!

I bought this Montero :lemon: used and it has plenty of other rattles and shakes but at least it does not sound like I am going off the road all the time. I hope that this liquid mechanic lasts for awhile but at less than $10 a shot I'll put it in every month if I need too ;) .

    Good Luck!
