I know most all the pros & cons of each, just can't seem to come up with something to get me off the fence.
Any help.
Is the V8 going to have better re-sale value?
The 1-2 MPG difference between the V6 & V8 seems pretty trival.
And I can't really decide if the AWD in the V8 is an advantage or disadvantage compared to the V6.
I guess I looking for some good reasons that would lean me one way or the other.
1) when I looked under the hood I noticed the dipstick looked essentially DRY and . . .
2) the inside trim was trashed, (speedometer not working, leather torn, digital clock missing and door panel plastic was broken.)
The outside body still looks preety good and it drives well . . . but is it worth the 8K??
I'm assuming that the AWD is, not like the Subie full 4WD? Right / Wrong.
THX.

Thanks,
Would most everyone agree??
It seems to be an issue of "pick your risk" to me. The V8 is a proven engine paired with a brand-new transmission. The V6 is a brand-new engine paired with a proven transmission. Transmission experts have posted here and elsewhere that modern automatic transmissions are as complex and likely to need repair as are engines. That's been my experience too, and a major reason why I went with a company known to get reliability right from the start.
4Runner gets it ??
Any comments
Does it make sense to wait for the 2005, when do they come to dealers anyway?
That is a good deal on a 04, remember 2004 is not half way done, I mean it is not like November. I don't know what new items the 2005 has, but I would say a good rule of thumb is, if you keep the SUV 2 or 3 years, get the 2005 and if you keep it 4 years or longer a 1 year older model doesn't matter that much.
I guess another question is "should you wait longer for a better deal?" Still that deal seems pretty good, I would be tempted.
You might try sheepskin covers. Cheaper than replacing the whole seat.

Anyone know if these will apply to the 4Runner ??
Let's hope so.
How great it is to put all my fly fishing gear in and just head to mountains without worry of where I am headed.
If I was going to gripe about anything it would be the stereo system. I had a better one in my 1986 Celica.
I put over 200,000 on my 1980 SR5 pick-up and look forward to doing the same with my new 4Runner.
Sorry for the long post. I'm just trilled.
I've driven several "loaner" '03 and '04 4Runners while my truck has been in for service, and I too have noticed that the audio sound quality of the lower tier systems can be lacking.
Based on my past experience with upgrading the audio in a 2002 Explorer, if you decide to upgrade your 4Runner's audio system at some point, my suggestion would be to FIRST try replacing the front door speakers with a brand such as Rockford-Fosgate if you want more high- and mid-frequency detail; or perhaps Eclipse speakers if you want a more rounded and softer sound. For the rear door speakers (which should really only be expected to provide a bit of rearward ambient sound, via the fader control), I would suggest a brand such as Eclipse.
If replacing the door speakers doesn't result in a significant improvement in sound quality, you might try adding a ~40-80 watt power amp such as those made by Precision Power http://www.precisionpower.com/ , connected to the existing "head" unit (radio, CD, cassette, etc.) in your truck. However, with the newer 4Runners, you'll have to be creative about where you would install/hide the power amp.
May I ask for your help in deciding which is the overall preferred engine, the V6 or the V8. I'm not towing anything and it's day-to-day driving. Coming from the GMC Typhoon, I'm concerned about overall performance....
The V8 is always in 4wd though so that may be something to consider also, whereas the V6 can be selected to be in 2wd.
The V8 is about 0.5sec faster to 0-60mph (7.5 vs. 8.0 sec approx). Otherwise, they are pretty similar performance-wise.
The V8 has proven reliability with a smooth shifting 5 speed automatic transmission.
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 --' 04 SE V8 AWD
2.349 ---- 60ft ---- 2.271
6.605 ---- 330ft ---- 6.499
10.140 ---- 1/8 mile ET ---- 10.051
70.03 ---- 1/8 MPH ---- 68.82
15.832 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.836
86.48 ---- 1/4 mph ---- 85.27
The V8 Supercharger is on indefinte hold from TRD because of some issues. The V6 will have the supercharger coming out with the Tacoma X-Runner (same 4.0L V6 as the 4Runner)
The V6 is reliable and proven reliability of the rock solid 4spd tranny

"If I'm reading that correctly the V6 is faster by 4 thousandths of a second? That is statistacally dead even and not even worth saying the V6 is faster. No matter where that test was done there are plenty of variables. So again they are dead even and you can't even say one is faster than the other with those numbers. That is closer than close. "
...true...tho' it sounds like jkd may not be interested in 4wd
jkd - not to mislead you, 2wd 4Rnrs come in either flavor, (V8/V6). I like the "push" (torque) of the 8 over the 6, either way it is a great truck.
