    Good afternoon,

This is a great question! At this time, I don't have much information on the 2013 Terrain Denali that will be out later this year. I will keep an eye out for any updates, though, and will get back if I near anything!

I purchased my Terrain almost a year ago. I've had the same problems almost the whole time. When I start it, it sounds like I'm holding the key on, a grinding/rattling noise. Also, while idling, occasionally the RPM's dip below 600 and it sounds like it is going to stall. It used to stall every morning but they replaced the camshaft position solenoid valves.

My concern is what these issues are doing to the vehicle long term. I've contacted both GM and BBB and no one is familiar with the issues. I've had it in for service numerous times but they haven't been able to "duplicate" the problem. I was just curious if anyone else has had similar issues. Thanks!

    Hello sundohio,

You stated in your post that you contacted GM; did you receive a case number from us (71-**********)? We'd be happy to check in on the case if you like.

    Hi Sarah,

I do have a case number and someone I'm communicating with. I recently found a group of people who are having a similar problem. They had a video of it and I sent it to the tech @ the dealership. I'm hoping they can diagnose the problem from it. Thanks.

No progress yet. The dealership told me that GM didn't have a "fix" for this problem. And they didn't know what to do about it. I guess that means I need to proceed via the Lemon Law.

I just bought my new 2012 GMC Terrain last month. I have less than 1,500 miles on it. Last week while pulling out of a drive-thru, the StabiliTrak warning light came on along with the message to Service StabiliTrak. I immediately pulled over and read the Owner's Manual. I turned the engine off, waited 15 seconds, and restarted the engine which cleared the message and the warning light. Since then it has happened three more times, each time as I was making a turn. It clears whenever I restart the engine. I called OnStar to have them run a diagnostic, and everything came back fine. I have the 2.4L engine, FWD. I have contacted my dealership and will take it in sometime next week to have it looked at. Has anyone else had this problem?

Before I go crazy, can someone tell me if the 4-CYL comes in the SLT-2?? I'm able to build it on gmc.com that way, but I haven't been able to locate any.

GMC completely lied about the gas mileage. For those who are looking for a new car and want great gas mileage, this is NOT the car you want. We chose the 4 cyl option and trust me, the only way this car would get 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway would be if it was being towed, with its engine off, by a Honda CRV. Even then I suspect the Terrain would find a way to burn gas somehow.

My wife had a new V6 Ford Escape prior and we got rid of it because we loved the safety and technology of the newer Terrain. However, what really sold it for us was the advertised mpg. We have now had this car for 6 months and I want to know something. How can a car that advertises a 26 combined in reality get an actual 21.5 combined????? My wife does not speed and we leave the ECO always on. I will tell you why, the city mileage probably gets 10 mpg.....if that. What a joke.

GMC, I know your company was headed for the brink of extinction and the tax payers had to save you. I am happy that everything worked out and we Americans were able to keep money and jobs in the U.S. However, this does not give you the right to lie to the people who ultimately bailed you so you could boost car sales and avoid bankruptcy.

When the class action lawsuit comes, and it will definitely be coming, we will be joining in. However, after the lawyers get their 75+% of the cut, that should leave each of us owners with a $1000 payout....not nearly enough to compensate us for the extra $1500 in gas per year versus what you sold us on. What a major disappointment.

Autobots - I have similar disappointment with my wife's 2011 Terrain. We traded in a 2008 Mountaineer after I convinced my wife that we needed to downsize & take advantage of the better fuel economy. Most of my wife's driving is in-town and our 6 cylinder is supposed to get 17 MPG. I believe the best MPG we have seen on in-town driving is 13...WHAT A LET DOWN. I called GMC & was told that they were aware of problems with the 4 & the 6; that they had a fix for the 4-cylinder and the engineers would be working on a fix for the 6. They also told me that once they had the fix that they would give owners $ for the extra fuel that they burned before the fix. You might want to ask about this fix (believe it was a fix on vehicle software.) No offense, but you probably won't benefit from a class action. There was a story on TV recently about a former lawyer in CA that filed a lawsuit for a Civic Hybrid that didn't get the advertised mileage. You might want to read about that on a website she has opened. I had a lemon and took my vehicle to the dealership for the same engine problem 4 times in the first year. The dealership never got the vehicle fixed. I found a law partnership that works these cases on a no recovery-no fee basis and they filed under the lemon law for me. Their fee is only paid by the manufacturer if they win. I have taken my wife's Terrain in 4 times for this fuel economy issue and nothing has been fixed.

I bought a 2010 4 cyl for a variety of reasons, but especially for the gas mileage. We live in Dallas which is relatively flat and my wife uses it for commuting and around town. We have never gotten close to 32 mpg on the highway and trust me, I've tried. The best we've ever gotten is about 28 mpg on the hwy. Around town in mixed driving we consistently get 22+mpg and in the last several months we are consistently getting around 26 mpg! My wife changed jobs and most of her driving is now slow rush hour type miles from stop and go to the 20 to 40 mph crawl. That has to be the difference. Overall, she loves the vehicle. I hate the front seat. Can never find a comfortable position (basic cloth seats), but she loves it so I'm happy!

Also, we just took it to the dealer for some recall warranty work and they replaced a lot! The big item was the high pressure fuel injector. They also replaced the timing belt, some hoses and a bunch of sensors on the timing belt. It used to be very noisy at idle, but now it's as quiet as any other vehicle we've had. We'll see if it improves the gas mileage.

I'll take 26 mpg which is much better than any other vehicle we've had but it would have been nice to get even close to the advertised 32 mpg on the highway. I read a car mag review where they had the Terrain for a long period of time. The "professional" car guy had the same gripes. Overall he loved the vehicle but could not get close to the advertised mpg and he wrote that he tried everything. He too maxed out at about 28 mpg.

So, potential buyers, its a great overall vehicle but beware of the advertised mpg!

I have a 2012 Terrain SLE1 4cyl with 400 miles on it. When trying to start the vehicle, it turns over briefly and then stalls. It takes up to 6 tries to finally start and stay running. This scenario has occurred many times in the short time I have owned the suv. It could be the first start of the morning or after it has been driven. I waited until I filled up with a new tank of gas, just in case that was the problem, before making an appointment with the dealer. The vehicle goes in on Monday, 4/9/12. I also called GMC, they opened a file for me, and will contact the dealer to follow up on the issue. It is embarrassing for me and for GMC to have a new vehicle still with temporary plates on it failing to start while in public areas. My son stays away from the car until it starts and then discreetly gets in to avoid embarrassment. So much for taking pride in driving a brand new car. I am desperately hoping that a plausible and permanent fix can be quickly made.

In city driving be it mixed freeway or surface streets, the average I have seen in my Terrain and Equinox are both around 22/24 mpg in non eco mode and sometimes using manual shifting.

Please be aware that these cars are not going to get advertised EPA mileage figures and if you expect that you are in for a rude shock. It doesn't mean that they are not great cars but you have to be realistic about how you drive and where you drive. I recently did 2500 miles in 2 weeks primarily interstate driving but also 2 lane road driving at speeds from 75mph to 25mph with a/c on and averaged 25+ mpg overall. While not EPA estimates, it was good for what and how I drove.

Hope this helps with some real world results.

I have the same problem. About 3000 miles on the Terrain bought in December and it started. At this point dealer has tried twice to fix. Last time was today, I did not make it home before I got the same service message. They are getting me a loaner car (which tolls the Lemon Law for out of service time periods) and will try to fix it as soon as they get another loaner in. Needless to say I would NEVER have bought this SUV if I knew I would be chasing this service message so soon. Dealer is stumped and I am looking at Lemon laws. I don't know if this is a big issue or not but obviously this kills the market value of the vehicle to keep giving you and error message around the transmission.

Just took a 600 mile round trip from Dallas to East Texas and back. Cruised along with traffic at about 65 mph plus some stop and go and farm to market highways. Still only got 26.5 mpg, even after all the warranty work I just had done! This was mostly flat to rolling hills driving, primarily on an interstate. You just can't get much more than 26 mpg with the 4 cylinder! Otherwise comfortable and a good highway cruiser with plenty of pep for a 4 banger.

Picked my Terrain up from the dealer today. They had called to say they started the car close to 70 times and could not produce the stall condition. When I arrived I discovered they had driven it 63 miles! The car didn't have to be driven anywhere to produce this problem let alone 63 miles. I was not happy at all. I was able to produce the condition in their presence on the 4th try. Does something smell awfully fishy here? We had a bit of a debate and they suggested I take the car somewhere else. I called the GM Customer Service District Specialist of NY/NJ and she said I needed to bring the car to another dealership to have them look at. Honestly, if this car goes through "another day at a GM dealership" like it just did, it's not going to survive. I'm writing a letter to GM Corporate Offices and will cope with the trouble starting the vehicle. I can only hope the day arrives where the car fails to start altogether and I can call On-Star and have it towed/repaired. Hopefully I am not stranded somewhere uninviting.

the fact that dealer could not reproduce problem in 63 tries and you reproduced it in 4 tries is not necessarily fishy - it's exactly how insidious software bugs behave. the trigger could have something to do with the exact speed/cadence at which you turn the ignition-key, anything obscure like that. anything is possible in cartoons and software.
The GM engineers will know how to fix it via "technical assistance center" which dealership should call. Keep escalating the issue until it is resolved - or trade the car if/when you decide it's time - demand super-favorable trade-in, like 0% depreciation - dealership/GM should offer this to you - ask for that option and get a vehicle that makes you happy!
If you decide to help GM chase the problem, the service department may *need* you to demonstrate the problem to them. If you make the issue occur while the vehicle has "data-logger" connected to OBD, hopefully that will provide the info necessary to diagnose/fix. Also the dealer can loan this 'data-logger' device to you for days/weeks at a time. best wishes....

I have seen elsewhere some owners get close to advertised EPA highway milage, but they drive in the 55-60 MPH range which pretty closely matchs the EPA highway test.

We also found that all the SLT2's were the V6. We special ordered one with the I4. It took about seven weeks. We have had it exactly one month today, and we love it.

I had a 2008 GMC Acadia and it did this all the time, the dealership could never duplicate the problem, after it happend a few times my braking would get wierd when it would come on. Always went out on it's own after a few minutes, I recorded it being on one time, but they would never do anything about it. Always the same thing stabilitrak light would come on and flash a warning to have it checked. My Acadia even once stalled on me when I went to go thru an intersection. I'm disappointed to read these problems with another GMC vehicle. I don't think i'll purchase one again:(
  • eliaselias Member Posts: 2,209
this first/stabiltrack-message problem is almost certainly an intermittent diagnostic failure of a wheel-speed-sensor. when it's intermittent like that it really is nothing to worry about (my 2005 GM vehicle has done it intermittently for all its 7 years, mostly in hot weather. dealership can never replicate it and often the code is 'cleared' by the time they read the OBD.) if it occurs and concerns you, find a place to safely stop/restart car and restart and it should re-enable the stabiltrak . you can get your own OBD reader tool for $29 and read the detailed code causing the message, if you like.

stalling is another problem altogether, much worse problem. should never happen with a modern automatic transmission vehicle. only occurred once? that might be one time too many for me as a car-buyer. totally unacceptable.

    Hello,

I have the same issues with my 2011 Terrain. I have an appt to take it into the dealership today. Last year it completely stalled on me 3x while leaving a parking garage. I took it in to get serviced and they changed the camshaft and solenoid valves as well.
I still have issues with the loud rattling noise when it starts up and the rough idyling once its in park. The noise is very bad. Friends of mine even commented on it various times.
In addition, while I am stopped at a light or stop sign it feels like it is going to stall out.
When I asked the dealership if they were having any of these issues with Terrains, they said no. So I am trying to be proactive and research on my own. Before purchasing the Terrain I had a Toyota Corolla and went through hell with it to try and get it fixed. I would of never imagined I would be back in the same situation so soon!
Do you happen to have a copy of the video you spoke of? I would love to be able to show the dealership.
    Thanks!

Have you had any luck recently with the fix? And have you started the process for the lemon law?
  • mwells7mwells7 Member Posts: 3
I'm trying to be proactive regarding the issues I'm having with my Terrain because what I'm reading is not giving me much hope. Have you received any information about your Lemon Law claim? Does the lawyer feel it will get resolved?
    Thanks!

Fortunately, I have not had those kind of problems...just BAD gas mileage. I tell everyone I can "Stay away from this vehicle - it is a gas hog!" False advertising - I don't care if EPA says 32 mpg - it doesn't get it.

My Toyota Camry Hybrid gets what the sticker stays - 39-41 mpg.
  • bwall2bwall2 Member Posts: 30
This sounds interesting - wonder if they will actually contact us for a "fix?"

My 4 cyclinder could use some help - gas mileage is horrendous - and I drive very conservatively.

Sorry everyone isn't getting the gas mileage they wanted, but the culprit here in the EPA. It's the EPA who estimates mileage, and the manufacturers simply post that result. Further, if you read below the BIG NUMBERS, you'll see there is actually a broad range of mileage that you can expect to get. Just another gubmint scam.

I own a 2010 Terrain have had it since January of 2010. I would like to mention for me in the city of Chicago the fuel consumption has been what is expected I have the 2.4lt. 4cyl. and get an average of 26mpg mix city and hwy and for a long road trip to Nashville got 36 Mpg and that was my calculation not what the car displays. I was very impressed.
Now the problem I do have with the car is that like everyone else I get a rough idle and it has turned off on me a couple of times at red lights.
The cam has been replaced, oil pump, timing belt (chain), and fuel pump. after all that I still get a rough Idle and a rattling sound the dealer told me, that is how that engine should sound. It is louder than any 4 cyl diesel.
Who do I need to talk to for help? It is not normal for a car at 25k miles have this much work done to it.

Appreciate your response. Minor correction to your stats - the dealer drove my car 63 miles and supposedly started it successfully 70 times. They didn't have to drive it anywhere to reproduce this problem. They used my car as a taxi and not for the purpose of replicating the problem I clearly reported. Since picking up my Terrain from this "service" appointment I have been keeping a log of every time I start the car. I record each start whether it is successful or not. From 4/11/2012 through 5/17/2012 I have attempted to start my Terrain 115 times. It failed to start on the first try 26 times. Do you still believe the dealer started the car successfully 70 times in a row? There is a problem and GM has no idea how to fix it. As for escalating the issue, I tried that - I called and wrote to GM. As a response, GM Customer Support closed the file that they opened for me in April. In their world the issue is dead. Now that I have documented 5 weeks of data I will try another GMC dealership. I have little faith it will be corrected - we'll see.

Brutal. My 2012 is 200 miles old and has stranded me twice. 2 new fuel pumps and still no successful solutions. Here comes an engineer to the dealership to try to solve my problem. I want out from under this sniper...gmc wants to keep fixing it.... Go Gm!

hi devs1... if dealership does not inspire confidence, it is fine to try another one, but of course can be difficult to travel to a different one sometimes.
a failure-to-start that strands you is a glaring 'drivability problem', so if that's the case then after a certain # of days-in-shop/attempts-to-fix, the vehicle can be administratively lemon-lawed in many states. maybe your state has lemon-law?
either way, i believe the adage 'do not attribute to malice what can be explained by ignorance' and that a well-intentioned 'taxi driver' like the courtesy-driver or parts-driver for the dealership might not notice an occurrence of fail-to-start, especially if started fine with an immediate-retry. a technician specifically looking for starting problems would not make that mistake, however.

btw, are you using the lowest recommended octane? (87 near sea level). premium fuel is harder to ignite by definition - it makes for harder starting, and provides zero benefit for most engines, probably including the terrain's.

We bought a 2012 GMC Terrain on August 1, 2012. We love it but the Stabilty Track Service light comes on and stays on after about 10 minutes of driving. We have tried clearing it but it just keeps coming back on. My husband is taking it in to the dealership tomorrow morning. The manual says it is safe to drive but I find this annoying. I hope we can fix this.

I love the 2012 Terrain I've been driving since February. However we've had a teenager problem where I work and I have need of a locking gas cap or locking door to the cap. There is not one made for any year of the Terrain models according to my local service department and we're told there is no after market one that will fit them either, by our local parts dealers. This is a Huge problem for me. As expensive as this vehicle was, a simple lock shouldn't be an obstacle for GMC. When will this problem be addressed?
  • ray80ray80 Member Posts: 1,655
Stant has not yet updated their web site to include 2012 model but they list two locking gas caps for 2010 and 2011 Terrain (reg and E85, most likely just color of cap differance). You might get your local parts place do do a try before you buy on one of these if they stock them.

I have a 2012 GMC Terrain 4wd with approximately 12,000 miles. Starting in November when ever I drive on the express way 55-65 mph, The Service Stabilitrak light will come on then the check engine light will blink on and off. Once I get to my destination once I restart the vehicle all the lights will be off. I have been the dealership on four different occasions 11/15, 11/17, 12/7 and 12/26.
The first time the vehicle misfire on cylinders 2,4,6. The codes were cleared and the light came back on 11/17. That visit the same misfire, The dealership found loose front breather duct. Secured the duct and clear the codes. Third visit Code P0300 Misfires again cylinder 2 and 4. Use a borascope to inspect both cylinders for collant/dye. Pressure test and replaced the intermittent ignition coil, spark plug. Last visit Code P0300. Carbon deposits on valves. Misfire again. Clean and Decarbonize and clean fuel system. I am beyond frustrated with the issue that I am having.. I feel that that is a bigger issue with the engine..Thoughts/Advise Please
    Thank You

Hi I was wondering if this problem was ever solved?? I just purchased a 2013 have had it for 6 days and am now driving a loaner car because my car was stalling out. The dealership has been helpful and kept my car for a couple of days because they were not experiencing the problem. today i got a voicemail that it stalled on them and they are going to run some test to see what could be wrong. I am just nervous I bought a car that is going to constantly be in the shop.
  • kristindenim79kristindenim79 Member Posts: 2
The vehicle is still at the shop since Friday. I am currently in a loaner. I was told that GM authorized them to open the engine and look further into why this issue keeps happening. I was told I would be without my car for awhile, since they may have to put a new engine in it.

My 2011 stalled out also. It is a terrible vehicle; I made a huge mistake purchasing another GM product. The dealer replaced the camshaft actuator - seems to be running now - this is the first vehicle I have ever had that stalled out - and I am 63 years old. The 2011 vehicle has the electric door locks switch located somewhere in the area of the radio - they have since moved it back. The best thing is the gas mileage - which I continue to complain about. The dealer was authorized to do a "consumption test" and guess what - it does 38.9 mpg! I have asked GM where the gas is going since my calculations indicate 24-26!

I could go on and on about how much I despise this vehicle - but it is not worth it. I sincerely wish someone would hit it in a parking lot and total it! At my age, I don't trade cars very often so I am stuck with it!

I just bought my 2012 6-cyl Terrain a week ago, and tonight the Service Stabilitrak light came on along with the message "Engine Power Reduced", and I was reduced to little more than a glorified parade car. I had just gotten off of the interstate when this happened, so needless to stay I was counting my lucky stars it hadn't happened there. It's still infuriating to have this happen only a week after I bought what was supposedly a "clean" vehicle. Guess the warranty will now be kicking in...what a joke.
