Jeep Liberty Power Window Regulators

My wife bought a used 2007 Limited 4x4 this past June and we have already had to replace both windows and regulators on the passenger side and this morning I had the left rear window and regulator replaced. We have had the vehicle for five months, it had 12,088 miles on it when we bought it and is at 16,250 miles now. Why hasn't Jeep recalled this model for the window problem? Do you know of any place to go to get help? The one today cost $600 since the warranty expired last month.? The window has to be replaced along with the phoney regulator.

    Do you have any reason to believe the problem is widespread versus a few isolated cases?

    I researched the power window regulator problem when the first window failed. There are many many complaints on the internet regarding this issue and Jeep is very well aware of the problem, yet they let the consumer pay out of pocket for a design failure that they built into this model. Explain that to someone that might be thinking about buying one of their vehicles..........

    Left rear window in 2006 Liberty slid down last week - called dealership - they wanted $500 to fix - said the window needed to be replaced and the whole mechanism was one piece. Read this forum and discovered that I could fix it myself with a kit from Steiger Performance for about $90 and a couple of hours. Can't believe that they wanted to stick me with a $500 bill to replace one little plastic part (the repair kit uses a metal piece for a permanent fix) - I am sooooo pissed! Will definitely be griping to the dealership.

    When my wife's Liberty rear window regulator failed, I purchased the part from the dealer and it didn't cost that much, I think maybe $40 if I recall. I replaced mine myself with the help of a camera and the Chilton manual and lots of patience. $500 is an absolute ripoff. How can they, would a straight face charge such prices?

    It sounds to me like you got a different part that's been modified to not have it fail again. I ordered a replacement part.

    Yes, the piece I purchased is metal as opposed to the original plastic one. My research on the web indicated that if you replace it with another plastic one, it is destined to fail again - so thought I'd try for a more permanent solution.
    Yeah, I don't know how stupid the dealership thought I was - they even said they would have to replace the glass - that was my cue to hang up the phone and fix it myself! Just want others to know that the fix is cheap and relatively simple.

    I have had seven (7) window regulator replaced; two (2) on the driver side, four (4) on the rear left passenger side and one (1) on the rear right passenger side. It was happing about every six (6) months now its every two (2) weeks Thank God that my Jeep is still under warranty. I have been jump through hoops with Chrysler Motors on getting this problem resolved (Still waiting for a return call from Crapysler). My dealership suggests that I invest in an extended warranty. That’s just [non-permissible content removed]. Chrysler knows that they have a serious safety issue. I won’t jeopardize putting any of the kids and/or pets in the back seat. Is Chrysler waiting for someone to get killed or hurt before they do something about this problem? They said that they did re-design on this part. “THE NEW DESIGN DOESN’T WORK EITHER” I’ve decided to contact the Texas Attorney Office for assistance on this issue; to see if it falls under any type of Lemon Law. It’s a persistent defect/safety issue.

    In the mean-time, I would advise anyone who is going to buy or know someone that is thinking of buying a Chrysler product to take their business elsewhere.

    Please be aware, my dealership informed me that, not only is it happing to the Jeep Liberty’s, but also to the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge trucks.

    Our Jeep is an 03 and so far only 1 window has failed. I don't use the windows unless I really have to. At least I now know that it's not that difficult a job for a do it yourselfer. It's just tedious.

    To be fair, I have a 2006 Liberty, and have put over 100,000 miles on it with literally no problems outside of this window thingy. I'm not saying that this window regulator debacle is right - just that I still like my Liberty - but do feel that Jeep has really dropped the ball on this problem. My advice? Fix it yourself with the metal replacement part available through Steiger Performance. And complain, complain, complain to Chrysler. I can't imagine why they haven't resolved this issue - seems to be ubiquitous and unsolved, as far as I can tell.

    I finally got a parts counter worker to print it out for me and it is a signed confession that Mopar is certainly aware of the problem. But, It did not keep them from charging me $293 for my fourth window and regulator which I paid Safelite $65 to install.
    Or go to your dealer and ask about body bulletin 68058661-AA, it spells it all out there. :lemon:

    Well I thought the new 2008 and newer would be better and not have window problems the earlyer ones have.. Well today my driver window went down, and would not come up. just made a rumbling noise. I was like darn, why am I plaiged with these issues... so i left it with jeep, and they are ordering the part.. well see how it goes..

    Try this sequence of clicks:

    My CarSpace > Manage Albums > Add Photo Album > Add Photos

    Then you can browse for the filename and upload it, then hit the Add Photos button.

    The page will ask you to name and tag your photo.

    Isn't there a lawyer who wants this case? There are thousands of us, Jeep Liberty owners who have had power window regulators go out not once but several times. Today is the 3rd. time my 06 Jeep Liberty drivers side rear window has gone out! I paid $350 to fix it a little over a year ago, the first time it was under warranty. I called today and they said they will talk to Chrysler, but I will probably have to pay for it. If there is a lawyer out there who wants this I will sign up and I'm sure thousands of other drivers will too.

    I have a 2003 jeep liberty and have replaced 2 window regulators, and one is currently down and needs to be replaced. I paid aboutn 250-275 each for the first two fixes. Didn't go through the dealership. I barely use the back windows, and they are the ones that have been replaced.

    I have a 2007 Jeep Liberty. Love the car, but I've had to replace 3 windows under warranty. The passenger window just quit working 2 days ago and has slid down. I didn't get much help from the dealer, so I called 1-800-992-1997, at Chrysler. The person was VERY helpful. I barely told her the problem and she offered me a refund for the other windows that had been fixed. I told her they had been under warranty. She gave me a ref no. and she told me to schedule my car with my dealer and that one of their representatives would be contacting the dealership and that my window would be fixed for free. So, call that number. They were absolutely great. I think there's going to be a recall soon.

    Message #21 mentions an on-line petition. Is that on the NHTSA website, or somewhere else? I would appreciate any add'l info. I have been all over the NHTSA website and couldn't find any petition nor was I able to locate this specific issue or figure out exactly where to file my complaint so that it will be linked to the correct area.

    SO glad I found someone else with this problem! I've replaced three of my four windows so far, and only one of them was under warranty. I've paid about $1,200 because of this problem so far, and it's absolutely ridiculous that Jeep has done nothing about it. My dealer even told me he's never heard of this happening before so it was "probably just due to overuse" (I barely ever put my windows down!!). Jeep has totally dropped the ball on this. I'm envious of whoever fedupinohio spoke with, my Chrysler rep was not nearly as nice and essentially told me too bad, there was nothing they could do. Someone had mentioned filing a complaint with the NHTSA website, I haven't been able to find where to do that...any help?

    If having issues with your windows falling down because of broken window regulators........... PLEASE do the leg work of making the proper phone calls & proper complaints to the right place. (posting on forums does not get the info across to the company, which is needed to issue recalls).

    Chrysler Company: 1-888-247-9753 (By calling, you can file a case management complaint & possibly have the cost of repairs & labor paid for)

    National Highway Safety & Traffic Association: 1-888-327-4236 (By calling or going online to safercar.gov you can file a safety/defect complaint which can help warrant Chrysler to issue a MANDATORY RECALL) (PS. as of today, they only have 52 complaints! Search the forums & count how many there are.... see what I mean by calling and complaining to the right place?)

    As of right now, as per Chrysler "there are no mandatory recalls on window regulators, only a customer satisfaction guarantee recall which is not out yet". The recall is apparently in the making for some 06 models & all 07 models & will be a definate, but the date of issue has not been set. :mad:

    Whether it was the pressure put on them or the fact that they made a ton of money from financing my car loan, my local Jeep dealer, Midway Jeep in San Diego, got approval from Chrysler to fix the rear left window breakdown at no cost to me. They called it a courtesy repair. I like to complain when I don't get good service, so I have to post my satisfaction this time around. Got my busted window regulator fixed for free!

    I just had to replace 2 windows and regulators on my 07 Jeep Liberty. I took it to the local repair shop and my extended warranty covered all but the new type of windows required to fix this obviously systemic problem. Chrysler agreed to reimburse me for the $350 out of pocket, but I have to send in paperwork and wait 6-8 weeks. What a crock but my complaints fell on deaf ears at their foreign call center. Apparently there are so many people to be reimbursed that the line is long. By the way, the dealerships do not have this information, CALL CHRYSLER DIRECTLY and demand satisfaction!
    My advice to everyone, take the car to the Jeep dealership, call Chrysler and demand that they pay directly to the dealer.
    The fact that this problem was not a subject of a recall is insane. No wonder they had to be bailed out; I doubt that I will ever buy another car from this company.

    Ok now my passenger window just popped this evening, and it wont go back up, the drivers did this about 4 months ago, now im under extended warantee, this pisses me off, so now I have to pay 100 ded. I have only had this jeep less than 3 years, i like it, but this window thing is pissing me off... now i have to have a wedge in the door to keep the window up... off to the dealer monday .. ugh.. :mad:

    I'm not sure what changed, but I believe Chrysler is fixing these if you ask.

    Here is my story:
    - 2006 Liberty CRD 2nd owner purchased from a dealer while still under factory warranty.
    - 2008 1st window broke at almost 36k miles. Read about it and learned this was common. Dealer fixed it under warranty replacing the glass and new style regulator. Chrysler refused to fix the other three since they had not broke yet.
    - 2009 2nd window broke after warranty expired, called Chrysler and they agreed to cover it.
    - 2009 3rd and 4th window broke so I just purchased the parts and did the work myself. Too much trouble dealing with Chrysler.
    - 2010 Dec. 1st window that was replaced broke again. Remember the dealer did this replacement. Called the dealer and they said the part was ~$300. I said no I just need the regulator all the windows have been replaced and I have new style regulators. He says they just came out with a new-new style regulator.
    - I asked service if there was anything they could do since they originally replaced the window and regulator. He immediately said he could probably get it replaced for free.

    I didn't pry, but I'm assuming that Chrysler sent the dealers a memo telling them that they will cover the costs and replace them with the new-new regulator.

    Anyway they did fix it for free. The service person had to call Chrysler to get an approval.

    Got a letter from Chrysler that says we are now covered for 7 years and we can request a refund for any that we paid for ourselves!

    My 2006 liberty left rear window dropped today and pulled back cover door panel and pulled window to top and duct taped in place. Now I am pissed that I find so many problems with these windows on this web page.....I will call 1-888-247-9753 and NHST 1-888-327-4236.

    YAY! Just got my letter in the mail the other day, the window regulators are now covered!!! Phew! Just in time.... I think my front drivers is going now :(

    Duct or any tape is usually a bad idea. I started using a bungee cord when mine break. Remove the door panel and loop a bungee cord around the sheet metal and hook it on the bottom side of the window. It holds it up really well and you don't have any tape residue left over to clean up.

    Form for refund came preprinted with my VIN number...Returned by certified mail, they received yesterday, should see something in 60 days according to the letter.
    Only covers 2006 and 07....I communicate with about 100 people who have the same problem and some are 2004 and 2005............

    I've got a 2006 and I submitted the letter through the online link and mailed the letter. About two days after I submitted online I received a call from Chrysler telling me that they would mail me a check for the full amount. I got the check in the mail two days ago.

    What and where did you send the letter to. My back window (left side) and waiting for the dealer for the part (1 wk so far)....the new frame cost $145 plus tax and a indenpent body shop will installed it fro me for about $70.. they have replaced 6 to 7 window frame on jeeps for the broken plastic part....common prob....................

    These windows are terribly easy to replace. It only took me about 15 minutes to change one of them. I have never seen the frame part broken on any of mine.

    Until July 2010 we had to replace 3 of four Window Regulators. The third was expensive as they indicated it was out of Warranty but had a "part revision" that also required NEW glass.
    $650 out of pocket.

    In January 2011 received a letter indicating extended warranty on Window Regulaors for 7 years. sounds good. Letter ent with receipts to request a refund.

    In February on the way home from the airport the 4th window dropped and inch and would not go up. The dealer indicated they were aware of the extended warranty but it only covered a specific part within ghe window mechanism ( ????????) They replaced the entire regulator along with providing a bill for over $350 since they indicated Chrysler would not cover it.

    Now it's a matter of contacting Chrysler Customer service yet again. This doesn't speak well to Chrysler & Dealer commitment to the so called extended warranty on the windo issue.

    I have 2007 Jeep Liberty -- the front two power windows went out early, while the car was still under warranty. Now one of the back windows is making noise, so that's probably going out now as well (the car has 46,000 miles).

    I mean good grief. How hard can it be to figure out how to put in a decent power window mechanism?

    Looks like they've been unable to master the skill for several years now.

    I'll ask my mechanic about it as the car is now out of warranty, but I may give the dealership some grief about it first, see if I can get some kind of compensation.

    You don't need to pay for this. I also have a Jeep 2007 Liberty and all the windows have been fixed at least twice and I haven't paid for a thing. Chrysler has given an extended warranty on these cars, so all you do is take the car in and they will verify the problem, send for the parts and then fix your car for free. If your dealership won't do it, contact Chrysler and they will set it up with your dealer. I can't believe how many people on this forum don't know this and have paid when they didn't have to. Chrysler will even REIMBURSE you if you have paid.

    Also, my dealership is surprised the haven't done a recall, but they probably won't. However, I think the fix is better now. They used to replace the whole window and the mechanism. Now I believe they fix that plastic piece of crap that holds up the window and keeps breaking. That's all that's wrong with it. The material of the part and it would be SO easy to fix, you have to wonder why they won't.

    Hope this helps. Post on here if this helped anyone.

    Thank you fedupinohio. The front 2 windows went out when my car was still under warranty. Now that one of the rear windows is making noise (though still working), it's not -- but I'll take it to the dealer in the next couple days, see if they'll replace it at no charge.

    I've always liked Jeeps but this is my first domestic car (I've driven VWs all my life) and it's just frustrating that a problem like this would have spanned so many model years. You'd think after one year of problems they'd figure it out and maybe fix it? Oh well. ....

    They have made an EXTENDED warranty on these windows because of the problem. If your dealership doesn't pay for it, Chrysler will. All you have to do is call them. My dealership wouldn't pay and I called Chrysler. They called the dealership for me and I got it all free. So don't let the dealership tell you that you have to pay for it. You don't. And this problem has been going on for years. Why they don't do a recall or just fix it is beyond me.

    This is typical of Chrysler. I previously had a Chrysler Sebring with door panels that fell off after I had the brand new car for 6 weeks. I drove the car with one or the other door panel falling off on a monthly basis for a year and a half. It was a little plastic clip that didn't hold the panel in place and should have been an easy fix. It wasn't until I went in there and literally screamed at the service manager that they GLUED the panels on. Just ridiculous. You'd think I would learn not to buy a Chrysler.

    Took my 07 liberty to the dealer yesterday, they confirmed that the window fix was no charge.

    Of course, after making the appointment the day before and leaving it as planned, they realized they didn't have the parts they needed. So now I have to take it back again today .... (And after I posted something on facebook about it, someone said 'that's odd, my nephew just got a used jeep and the windows keep falling down into the doors.') Imagine that.

    Ugh.

    I have a 2003 jeep liberty which I purchased with one back window not working (Wired shut with coat hanger wire) and one window that would keep falling down. After taking apart the door panel and looking at the regulator as you are all surprised to find out the plastic piece that holds the window up broke off from wearing inside the tube. I contacted the dealership and was told each regulator was a little over $200 and no other replacement was available online from the parts people. I searched on line and found this form. I did purchase the replacement metal clips from Steiger Performance and installed them about 3 months ago and the windows are still going up and down. I thought for $80 the part was expensive, but considerably cheaper than a new regulator. I would have been happy putting in a few plastic clips if they were $3 but this is a solution that works and should last longer than the vehicle. I don't know why Jeep is not purchasing these parts from Steiger and offering them as a solution to everyone's problems, but they just don't seem to want to solve it. If anyone else has similar issues, some mechanical ability (pretty easy job) is all you need to solve your problems for good. :)

    There's a fix. It's called the Lemon Law. If every single person who posted would open a case, Chrysler would do something about it.

    I'm not an expert on Lemon Laws, but I doubt if a power window issue would qualify.

    There is a class action lawsuit over the window regulators (Class Action Case No. 10CV2623IEG BLM). Hopefully in about 10-15 years, once the case is settled, i will get a check in the mail, less attorneys fees of course ($350.00-$347.50=$2.50). Until then....no more jeeps in my future (pronounced "heeps" in case you were wondering). Styling and "initial" quality is great, long term quality is crap and standing behind their product is non existant. Why fix the problem when the service Dept. can make $350 a pop on us loyal jeep owners?

    I think jeep will eventually go away as the MPG standards get ratcheted up. My Liberty was getting 13.5 MPG before i got rid of it.

    Ok so the jeep company is really no help at all. I have an 06 jeep liberty and have had both the back window regulators replaced while under warrenty. Now I have paid the car off and it is out of warrenty and ofcourse now i have the two back window regulators out and the passenger front side has also gone out all within 2 months time. I called the customer service line what a joke that was. DO NOT BUY A JEEP OR ANYTHING FOR THAT MATTER FROM THE JEEP COMPANY.

    I think it does qualify under most state lemon laws (although I am not an expert either). The statute is written that it has to "substantially impact the saftey, use, or value of the vehicle." I think the window issue impares both the value and the use substantially. If you've been to the dealer more than 3 times for the window issue - open a case!

    I have a Jeep Liberty (09-05) and the left rear window dropped down as my wife was driving. We purchased this Jeep for winter driving as it is four wheel drive, and now should another window drop down in the dead of winter and us out on the road at our age 72 years plus.?
    The cost of changing out all the windows is out of our budget, and why they know this part often fails and continue its use I do not understand.
