As far as a spec. for a vehicle to use oil, what a joke. I have a 2004 Yukon XL with 70,000 miles. I don't change the oil for 7,500 miles, and only check it once, usually when it is getting towards 5,000, never a problem. In fact, my Audi and my Honda Civic don't use oil, at all. My old GMC Envoy never used a drop.
I hope the people on here can get the issue resolved.
I apologize that no one has gotten back with you. Can you email me your case number or VIN so I can look further into the situation? You can get my email by clicking on gmcustsvc. Thank you,

I had the very same issue and had to work through several fixes before they finally got it to stop using oil. There is a GM rep on this site that says she will help but I do not have any personal experience with her. Call GM customer service and start your ride. They will order an oil consumption test. Then if it fails then you will get to try one of the many fixes they try. I had a new PVC, then they cleaned out my Valve covers, then new heads, then they finally put in new pistons, rings, and rod bearings. It has been about two oil changes since then and it appears to have zero oil consumption now.
This took almost a year to complete and alot of my time to get it done. Good Luck. Remember the squeeky wheel gets the oil.
Engine using 2-3 qts of oil every 3000 miles. Inspect and found AFM valve spraying engine oil on bottom of cylinder causing oil consumption, R&R engine oil pan install AFM valve shield, carbon treat engine, change engine oil and filter and roadtest vehicle to correct.
I have no idea if this will fix the problem. I'm having my doubts. I think they were game to try anything because I had lost my temper with the service manager on the phone. I'll let you all know when it gets close to changing the oil. The light would always come on near 500 to 850 miles from what the sticker the dealer would put on there about when the oil needed to be changed again. But you can mark my word, if it does come back on that will be the last GM product I buy.
This past spring, I was taking my children out of state for a trip and the vehicle started to slip, almost as if I was on ice or something. The steering was not right either. By the grace of God I was able to get back to home and the very next day, I drove it a short while and then saw the Stabili-trac light was on and heard a knocking noise (keep in mind, the oil was just changed a short time earlier and no indication there was a problem with the oil). I got a few more blocks after the knocking noise, at which point black smoke came from the front of the vehicle and the knocking got louder and louder. Luckily, I was blocks away from the GM dealer and was able to "roll" into the lot. Being it was after hours, I left it there, dropped keys and the next morning they called to say the engine was all messed up. BUT, GMC, although knowing this make/model/year has been having difficulty with the same issue, REFUSES to give us a brand new engine and instead will only FIX what was wrong. (It ended up being a number of things, to include the rods that busted). I am sickened by the way GMC handled, or did NOT handle this issue. I feel that we paid full price for this vehicle, with the belief that what we bought was of excellent quality and from a company with excellent customer service. I found this is not the case. They feel that "fixing" this problem at 50,000 miles is appropriate. I feel it is not. I feel the integrity of my engine has been comprimised and what will happen once the warranty runs out. At least, they should extend the warranty considerably, or replace the entire engine!!
Anyone struggling with the oil issues currently, don't let it go! I was lucky to not have the engine blow while going across states by myself, and just happened to be right by a dealer. It was extremely unsafe and dangerous to drive when it did in fact blow.
I apologize you are having difficulties with your vehicle. If you are unhappy with the diagnosis at your dealer I would recommend getting a second opinion from a different dealer. If you are purchasing a new vehicle I would definitely recommend looking at the brand web site. I would definitely recommend using the build your own page for the vehicle you are interested in. There is also a live web chat button on the brand web sites for pre-purchase questions. Web chat associates can help locate your specific vehicle of interest, give incentive information, as well as information on feature availability. I hope this information helps!

If you are under 100K then you need to consider what type of dealer service department you are dealing with. You may want to look into using another if this is the case. I would also say that if you are under the 100K mark then contact GM directly to get the issue addressed. Be ready for a long drawn out oil consuption test/test's before the issue is fixed. It took me 4 or 5 different fixes before they finally stopped the oil consumption issue. (i.e. new PVC valve with clean out of valve covers, all new complet head replacement both sides, then new rings, rods and rod bearings) This took me about 1 year to finally get it solved. Sorry to hear about your issue. I don't buy any 2007 GM products because of what I learned about that year. It is not just the Yukons. It is anything with a 5.3 liter or 4.x liter engine. They had some supplier issues with what was delivered.
THIS IS RIDICULOUS! This is the second time this has happened!
I had my first major checkup done at 29,000 miles with all the recommended maintenance. I had maintained the vehicle previously with regular oil and filter changes and no problems up to that time. I use full synthetic oil and usually go 4-6,000 miles between oil changes. When I went in for my oil change at 34,000 miles they checked my oil level and said it was so low it didn't register on the dip stick. Since I had never had a problem before and hadn't noticed any smoke or other symptoms of engine problems I assumed that either they had mistakenly put in too little oil at my last oil change or had left the drain plug or oil filter loose causing a leak, although I had not noticed any signs of oil leakage where I park.
Anyway I had them change the oil and watched at they put in 6 full quarts of synthetic. We checked the dip stick which showed full and then let the engine run to check for leaks -----none were found.
Yesterday after approximately 1,600 miles of driving I checked my oil level and found that there was less than 1/2 inch showing on the dip stick. I'm guessing down at least 2 quarts if not more.
I took it into the dealer this morning with the paperwork from my previous oil changes and explained the situation. (obviously using too much oil !!)
The service manager calmly told me (we) would have to do an oil consumption test to verify how much oil was being used. They would fill it up and I would come back every 500 miles to check the level until I was due for my next oil change. Since I don't drive a lot this will take a long time and many visits to the dealer. Also at the rate I'm using oil I will run out of oil before the test is completed.
Unfortunately, it looks like I'm in the same leaky boat as everyone else here. Also since I paid cash for the vehicle I'm probably stuck with an oil burner until it conks out and I either purchase a new engine or send it to the junk yard. I certainly couldn't sell it to some unsuspecting buyer without disclosing the problem and then who in their right mind would buy it.
I'll keep you guys posted, but I'm not looking forward to the coming experience. I've never gotten out of the dealership with less than a $500.00 dollar service bill and going back every 500 miles will get very expensive. In 2006 they only offered a 36,000 mile warranty which I just went over so this won't be fun no matter which way it ends up.
I was looking in the owners manual and found this on page 256:
"If your vehicle has an oil level sensor and the oil
level in the vehicle is low, this message will
display. Check the oil level and correct it as
necessary. You may need to let the vehicle cool
or warm up and cycle the ignition to be sure
this message will clear.
This message will clear itself after 10 seconds,
until the next ignition cycle. See Engine Oil
on page 438 for additional information."
I hope hope this information helps!

I have to yet a gain go to the dealer i purchased my Yukon XL to have them address my oil consumption issue. I have had the tests done, the clean outs done, and the sheilds installed. Do you know what the next phase of this is. I really don't want to be disapointed when it happens again. What is the bullet after the sheilds are installed? What will they do next to tell me might work. After they installed tghe sheilds they basically said have a nice day and sent me on my way. I asked should i bring it in for a check up at soem point. I was told that it should be all set. Where do i go from here. My concern is that i will have my family in it when something goes horribly wrong. Can you offer any advice here?????
I can email you the VIN# if you like so you can see work performed already. If they have recorded it.......?
My name is Christina I have taken over for Mariah. If you would please e-mail me your VIN and fill me in on your situation and concerns, I am happy to assist!

Now, I ask, how many more times do we have to drive out to have the oil checked before something is done? How many quarts of oil are missing when the light goes on? Why aren't all GMC dealers honoring warranties REGARDLESS of where you bought it? How much oil is reported by each dot on the dipstick? How much oil consumption is too much? Does GM have a consistently methodology for their dealership to use to measure oil consumption and levels?
was a lease turn in with 49,000 miles. We JUST YESTERDAY had our "low oil warning light" come on for the first time. I've been driving Suburbans since 1974 ('74, '79, '81, '85, '90, '93, '99 and now '07). A friend recently saw me in our latest one (the '07) and began telling me about his '07 Yukon XL oil consumption problem...I decided to snoop around in Edmunds.com and found this blog...I am worried! Any use in contacting the local dealer? What do some of you suggest?
I had to drive 2 hours each way, (on a friend's recommendation) to find a customer service oriented, helpful dealer. It was worth it. This was a small town dealer, located outside a large metro area.
Do it right away.....before your 100,000 mile/5 yr. warranty expires......
I called Customer Service who barely understood what I told them. First the young lady told me the battery was under warranty. I told her a new battery would be a BAND-AID fix, and would not solve the underlying issues that keep causing electrical problems. There is a draw somewhere that no one can find.
They keep calling me, wanting to close the case. I asked where they're located; they keep telling me "Detoit". On one call I was so upset by their ignorance, I told them to stop lying and be honest with their location: they are located in the Phillipines.
We became tired with the dealer and whole situation, so we traded out of that truck yesterday. I am also working on trading in my Silverado (just have to wait for another dealer to find a suitable vehicle).
I'm sorry, GM. The way this whole thing has been/is being handled is ridiculous. Been a GM customer for many years. Sad that something like this destroyed my loyalty. Your sales are up now, and I am but one driver, so not expecting a send off or the GM team to run to my aid. Just want to make a point.
For those sitting on the fence, the Nissan Armada is a nice replacement to the Yukon. 5.6 Liter V8 packs a 9,000lb towing capacity and gets BETTER FUEL ECONOMY by about 40%! Even more, it seats one more person than the Yukon, and has more features/amenities than a $1000 Swiss Army knife.
Good bye GM...will miss you.
Tell that dealer that they need to supply the oil to run your car for a year. I had the same issue. GM says that you should be concerned if the vehicle is using more than 1qt every 1000 miles. Sounds like you are doing more than that. This is not acceptable. Try to go to a dealer that is better to its customers. On that knows what they are talking about. Tell them to get some education on what GM is putting out as dealer bullitins. This is a well documented problem with 2007 5.3 L engines. It takes a lot of steps but they will either fix it or replace the engine. I can tell you that it is not normal. Look at my posts on here. It took me over 5 fixes to finally get it fixed. They would have been better off replacing my engine. I received a new PVC with a clean out of my valve covers, all new heads, new pistons rings and rod bearings. Pretty much a new engine. Finally it does not use oil. Imagine that. A vehicle that can be driven 3-5K miles without using any oil. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.... Bottom line if your dealer does not help you call GM and go to another dealer and never buy a car off the one that would not help you.
An oil consumption test is the first step to see if it’s in an acceptable range. Have you asked another dealers opinion?

I'm having a double problem with my 2007 5.3L Yukon ..excessive oil consumption and the complete loss of oil pressure (anytime under any condition) even though the engine is only a half quart low.
As with everyone else, the dealer is throwing theoretical fixes at a problem that GM has not performed root cause identification on. No less than three fixes have been thrown at my engine so far.
My issue is the safety of my wife and five children in the event the engine seizes up, there is a loss of power steering & brakes, and my wife or teenager is driving. I have been advised to ask my dealer to provide written documentation that the engine problem in my Yukon has been permanently rectified and that no harm will come to my family in the event of engine failure and subsequent loss of power during operation of our warranted vehicle.
My vehicle is at Frank Boucher in Racine at this moment. As of yesterday, the service adviser could/would not assure me or root cause identification or safety.
By chance, have you contacted GM Customer Assistance via phone?
Thank you,
Caron, GM Customer Service
Picked up my Yukon from the dealer yesterday. An oil screen in the intake manifold was replaced along with a set of lifters on one side.
Synopsis per the serviceman was: "engine problem undefined" "drive it and let us know if it acts up again" "GM dictates the progression of repairs and will not pay us if we jump ahead and simply replace the motor" "99% of the time replacing the piston rings does it" "can't guarranty what will happen if engine fails during operation".
General service note: before leaving the dealer, opened the hood to find the engine cowling cover loose and off to the side! Had to have the serviceman look at it, and have a technician come out to re-install. Looked under the car to find many fresh Oil droplets under the frame. Asked the serviceman to look at it, which he didn't. "Yeah, they had the whole top off and you'll get that. "
Please keep me posted after you do talk with your agent this afternoon. Also, please provide the VIN to your agent so it can be added to your case.
Thank you,
Caron, GM Customer Service
