2002 forester transmission violently knocking and jumping

I have a 2002 forester with manual transmission and 150,000 miles.
Since I bought the car (30,000 miles ago the clutch has had the
well known "judder" problem but I learned to drive without having that
happen)

I started to notice last week that the shifter would jiggle more than
usual when driving in first or second gear.
My girlfriend just had the car for the weekend and when she got back
the transmission now makes very loud knocking noises (and you can feel it
jumping up and down violently) if you are not extremely careful with the clutch.
The car is undrivable as I can't accelerate at a reasonable pace without
the violent knocking and jumping.

Anyone know the issue here?
Could it be as simple as transmission mount?

Thanks for the advice.

Originally it was that simple. Hopefully no real damage has been done to the drive train by continuing to drive it like that.

    Thanks for the reply.

A mechanic (and a guy on another forum) told me it was the u-joint on the drive shaft...
I'm still wondering why it's OK at higher speeds if that is the case.

If it is a bad mount or u-joint or driveshaft bushing, it all has to do with the amount of torque. When you're not accelerating, it will settle down and operate smoothly, but apply some torque to throw it out of balance, and it starts to jump....

got the u-joints replaced (custom job by monsier driveshaft in montreal)...
    the problem is gone.
