Ford Edge exhaust smell in cabin

I have a 2013 Edge SEL AWD and if I have any window cracked open a little or all the way down when accelerating to get on freeway or just putting the gas peddle 3/4 of the way to the floor or all the way to the floor I will get exhaust smell inside the vehicle,anyone else have this problem?This is the first vehicle I have ever owned that does this and it gives me a headache. Not sure why it does this the exhaust pipes and tail pipes all look good with no leaks. Please Help

    There must be a leak somewhere. My 2013 Edge Limited AWD does not have this concern. Better take it to the dealer and have it checked out.

    I recently noticed a smell too in my 2013 Edge. It only happens for a few seconds when I first start the car, and I would describe it as a mothball-type smell. It happens with and without the AC on.

    Would you say that's an exhaust smell too? Or something else?

    That could be a wiff of stale air from the vent system. Vent sysem is on usually when the a/c is on or off.

    I would say stale air for sure, mine is for sure exhaust, the smell comes in every time I hit the gas to pass or get on the freeway with windows open just a little,you should NEVER get exhaust smell in the cabin while driving.

    I have a 2013 Ford with the cabin exhaust smell during acceleration. I have my in the repair shop twice. Fords response is we are aware of the problem. During the meantime my wife which is asthmatic and it effects her asthma. I had a lab take air samples and the fumes is carbon monoxide. Which appears to coming from the catalytic converter. per ford
    I would push hard on your ford dealer on making ford resolve the problem.
    I have put ford on notice to fix the problem are will have to look at my alternative option.

    I have the same car and i am facing the same problem, i report and they recall the car and made some adjustment to the exhaust but it didn't work, then they said it is a program issue and they are waiting for an upgrade to solve this problem, after a time they said it is a common problem in all edge car and they are looking for a solution.

    Well I took my Edge in for service and told them about the exhaust smell coming in the cabin,they told me they found some stickers on the exhaust put there by Ford and they took them off and it was fixed,Well I left the dealer and guess what its NOT fixed the exhaust is still coming in when under hard acceleration when passing or going up a long hill,70 percent gas or more.Not sure what to do now,we took the edge on vacation and the smell was so bad at one time me and my wife got sick and had to stop for the day and go to a hotel.I will let my dealer know and see what they say before calling a lawyer. By the way there head mechanic and I went for a ride and he confirmed what I was telling them and he did smell it.

    I have a 2013 ford explorer. When I accelerate to get on the highway or around cars the exhaust comes in the cabin. It’s been so bad that I have to roll down the windows. I am concerned for the health of my family. I have had my car in and out of the shop more than a handful of times. Only 2 of the times did the service department document my exhaust issue. I was advised that ford is aware of the issue but has no idea how to repair it. Were any of you able to get your vehicle repaired?

    Do not worry about the burning smell because as the tobacco companies they have internal studies that the fumes do not cause damage.

    Ford sent me this letter.

    Ford got the problem of having the exhaust gases into the cabin when accelerating when the cabin pressure is reduced though a rear gate. they modified the exhaust nozzle but still the smell comming especially when theres a cross wind.they really proved how bad designers they are....the problem can only be solved moving this gate to another location away from this location.Also i realized that this is only exist with the conventional A/C control panel where the fresh air vent is controlled manually.All owners of this car not to be quite and raise the issue to the limit

    I have been getting a burning smell in my 2011 Ford Edge upon acceleration, for quite some time. When this happens, I almost pass out while driving. I took my car in after my ac quit cooling and they replaced the cooling fan. They said that was causing the burning smell. It has only been a month and the burning smell is back and this time I DID pass out- fortunately I was stopped at a traffic light. It not Carbon Monoxide- I put a CO detector in my car and it has never registered any CO. What is causing the smell and why does it make me pass out?

    I have a 2013 Edge SEL and it has this odor problem. It only has 9,000 miles on it and the problem started about 6-8 months after purchasing it. I get out of my vehicle and smell like exhaust-not cool. I find I am getting headaches while driving-really not cool. I have asthma and allergies and it really bothers me. The strong burning oil smell occurs intermittently when driving up hills and during quick acceleration. I have taken it in several times now and each time they tell me it's not reproducible and they can't find anything wrong in exception to the last time they stated they found a small oil leak in a gasket in the front of the engine. I am still having the odor and it is in the shop AGAIN. I am frustrated...I love this car but I hate this problem.

    I have a 2014 Ford Edge with about 20K miles on it and I've noticed a bad smell in the cabin about 5K miles ago. At times it gets so bad, it becomes difficult to breathe. I have changed the air cabin filter but it is still happening. I did notice that behind the glove box, where the air cabin filter goes, that there is an extreme amount of rust that is occurring. The smell does seem to be more moisture related (like and old a/c with mold problems), than exhaust related, as I have seen in older posts. Maybe it's a combo, but it isn't good.

    Could be mold related. You may want to investigate that area further, perhaps down under the firewall padding or the carpeting. Mold/mildew can certainly cause breathing problems. AC conduits can also develop severe mold issues, and can be treated by an AC specialist.

    wow, i knew I wasn't crazy!! I own a 2013 Ford Edge with exactly the same problem...horrible smells coming into the cab. My husband couldn't smell if he was sprayed by a skunk. I get horrible head aches and cant wait to be out of that car. I just purchased it and noticed the smell the next day. Im in the process of getting it looked at. Any ideas on how best to fix it? I noticed its been a year since the last post... has Ford found a solution?

    2011 Ford Edge, can smell the exhaust when pulling on the highway with a/c on and HVAC vent in recirc. The exhaust gases get drafted back in under the rear bumper into the rear quarter panel body vents. Put the HVAC vents on fresh air and pull on the highway, no smell. The Explorers also suffer form this. You would think wind tunnel testing would have revealed this years ago.

    You'll probably want to examine this problem more closely regardless of what Ford says about it. Carbon Monoxide fumes are dangerous, even if you don't smell anything.

    carbon monoxide the dealer can't resolve? Dump it and buy something else. Your health isn't worth it. Cops are parking Explorer's for this issue due to accidents and police blacking out behind the wheel. CO is a silent killer.

    We own a 2011 3.5 Limited Edge & the “propane” like odor started creeping into the cabin 3 weeks ago. Brought it to my mechanic & couldn’t find any leaks (oil/grease). Odor continued. Cleaned the engine & hvac components. The odor continues to overwhelm when we’re stopped at a light but goes away when moving. Will address the issue with the dealer.

    Could be coming from your exhaust system. Maybe from a small leak before the catalytic converter, or maybe an issue with the converter itself. The small amount of sulfur in fuel creates hydrogen sulfide in the exhaust. That has a "rotten egg" odor. The catalytic converter converts that to sulfur dioxide, which has no odor. If the converter breaks or is plugged, you would have that odor in the exhaust. So it sort of makes sense that the smell builds up sitting at a light.

    I recently had a check engine light on a 2012 vehicle that was a result of a failure of the catalytic converter, so that's certainly a possibility. First time I ever had to replace a converter in a vehicle. We tend to keep vehicles a fairly long time, so I suppose I was due

    Well, you might not get a code. A sensor in my converter also failed, so I had the CEL. Most recent recall I can find on the Edge is from 2011 for an electrical issue. I don't think any upgrade is coming on a 2011 vehicle.

    Since you're not getting any codes, hopefully you get lucky and you simply have a leak in the exhaust. But exhaust/converter is certainly where I'd be looking.

    Update on 2011 Edge; the “propane” odor that has drawn much controversy (between mechanics & friends) is dissipating which leads us to believe a rodent is lodged somewhere deep inside. The propane odor simulates a heavy grease smell that keeps you guessing, thx for all comments!
