You may be able to reduce this cooling effect by switching to recycle mode, where interior air becomes the primary component of the "bleed".
Don't forget that vent air directed at your head will feel cooler, even if it is the same temperature as air directed to your feet -- the so-called windchill effect.
I'm having the same problems with my 98 avalon but can't seem to get the folks at a local dealer to order me the parts. The problem is they can't find the parts based on your description. Is there any chance that you have the part numbers for the three items? If you do, please forward them to me at [email protected]. Thank you kindly.
John
I am sorry I have not sent these part numbers earlier but I have not been on this forum for months. Toyota should have the TSB I listed as AC005-99 titled Auto A/C System Improvement. # 88650-41030- A/C Amplifier(ECU), #87106-07050- Air Inlet Servo Motor, #87151-07010-Servo Link(Damper Plate). This is a very expensive replacement. If the only problem you have is the high to low variation not working, then the Linear controller replacement is the only problem. This item is the controller on XLS models which have the auto-climate control feature. If you had a non-automatic climate control then the blower motor resistor would be the part. By what you are saying It sounds to me that you need the linear controller only. That part number is #87165-32010. Good luck and have them replace this part first before you move on to the other parts as outlined at the beginning of this paragraph. Thanks Dan
Thanks in advance for any input!
MikeS.
Hope this helps.
I have pictures of the disassembly that I will send to anyone who wants them. The zip file is just over 1 MB. Contact me off-list at [email protected]
My Avalon is a 2000. I suspect they are all the same. Have a look at the pictures and make your own decision.
Also, if you know of the location of the fuel filter, I'd appreciate any help in that area, too.
Thanks - Dave Lamken
In the manual mode I can switch it to high, low, or medium but in the auto mode it only runs on low. Even on the low setting the interior temperature appears to be cool though. Any ideas, or does that mean spending $80 for a dealership diagnostic?

Any suggestions for finding the fuse and home repair? Thanx
Ken
Don't know if this will help you or not.
i had exactly this problem with my 99 Volvo. It cooled or heated good, the temp control worked fine, but the fan moter would not operate as it had when new. I could manually adjust the fan motor ok.
The dealers started off going into the computer. The first two times it was 175.00 each and they told me that if this didn't fix it we would have to do soandso. After the second time, they started talking big money on the computer. I traded for a '05 Avalon Limited.
That cured my problem.
Could you send me a picture showing replacement of the AC filter on the avalon.
It is a hard to swallow cost for what should be a simple proceedure.
Thanks
John
I don't check the Avalon message borad very often and just saw your request for pictures of the cabin air filter replacement. I'll be happy to send them if you still want them. BUT - You didn't include your e-mail address. Mine is mpcraig(at)excite(dot)com.

Go under the dash, take off the bottom fascia, and see if the cable, should be black or blue covering is moving smoothly or has pulled away from its anchor.

I just did mine because some stereo shop did not put the dash back on correctly so I had to take down almost 3/4 of my dashboard.
1. Is it a 2000-2004 model??
2. Take down the fascia underneath the glovebox.
3. Open the glovebox. There are several phillips screws that need to be removed around the glovebox.
4. Gently pry with your finger if you can, or a thin implement covered with electrical tape the glovebox away from the dash. Note: The connection to the passenger side airbag is attached in back. Do not disconnect the connection but rather unhook it from the back of the glovebox.
5. Look center and you will see the filter and the frame around it. Just remove it, replace it with a new one, slide it back and put the glovebox back and the fascia in reverse order.

Thanks for the reply. Which side of the dash? Passenger or drivers side? What is this blue or black cable connected to? If you can provide some additional details it would be much appreciated.
I got a replacement cabin filter at a local auto parts store ($20.00), actually the little dinky thing was more expensive than the air filter for the car. Beats the cost of having the dealer do it though. total time about 30 minutes (that includes a beer and smoke break in between dis-assembly and re-assembly).
Anyone else ever hear this? Could it be a blocked cowl drain? Anyone know how to access the cowl drains?
Thanks
Ken
you can test the theory of a clogged A/C drain. leave the AC on and get out of the car (while in park)
look under the front of the vehicle (from the side of the car), and you SHOULD see condensate dripping at a good pace to the pavement. if you don't see any, or it is extremely slow, you have a clogged drain.
have someone blow compressed air up the A/C drain to unblock it. Chances are, you are parking under trees or collecting debris under the wipers that gets into the outside air vent and clogs the drain.
it's also possible the drain tube is crimped.
it's possible that the compressed air trick will only temporarily dislodge the debris, and perhaps it needs to be fixed at the point in collects in the pan.
take care of this now, or you'll find water in your footwells soon enough.

I just bought a 2001 Avalon with 81,000 miles on it from the original owner. I've come across two problems.
1. When the car starts a large puff of white smoke comes from the exhaust.
2. When the fan is on with the AC off moist warm air comes from the vents.
I'd like to cure this before something molds and I have a bad smell to go along with the current problem.
Any clues??? + :confuse:
Ken
Toyota had to repair many of these engines, some with less mileage than yours.
Use the search button and type in "engine sludge"
"1. When the car starts a large puff of white smoke comes from the exhaust."
Smoke in exhaust could be a sign of sludge, among other things. Other signs of sludge are a rapid loss of oil, visible signs of sludge or thickened oil on dip stick or around oil fill area, or check engine light illuminated. Toyota has an extended 8-year warranty for sludge, but owners must show proof of reasonable maintenance, a difficult task if you are not the first owner. The Toyota problem wasn't related to just not changing oil. Toyota made some design changes in 2002 to correct the problem. 1997 to early 2002 models are covered under the extended warranty.
Otherwise the only solution I have ever found is to leave the windows or sunroof open at night so the mositure remaining on the A/C evaporator can evaporate and via slight convection airflow be wafted out of the cabin.
It also helps if you simply disconnect the A/C compressor clutch wiring during the winter months.
As of 2001 the RX300 had a c-best option wherein the A/C could be disabled, indefinitely, by simply turning it off, and a second option to "unling\k" it from operation in defrost/demist/defog mode.
Bottom line is that ANY TIME you use the A/C and then turn it off then all 10,000 square inches of the evaporator vane surface area will be covered with a thin film of condensate. It can take HOURS for nature to run its course and remove all of that from, first, the A/C plenum, and then from the cabin provided there is an "escape" route.
I know...I know...pushing the button is not a difficult task!, Im just spoiled.
Thanks
I have a couple of questions regarding my avalon. I bought it used last year. It has been running great but there a few problems that I'm not sure what I should do.
1. When it goes over puddle on the right front side, there is some squeeking sound and the AC light will flash. I'll have to turn off and on again to get the AC to work;
2. The gas mileage is about 23 mpg on highway (I mostly drive 65 to 70 mph). It seems that the efficiency is come down a bit. Is there anything I can do about it?
Thanks,
Gary
