The 3 warning messages appeared on the Friday.
The vehicle sat in the driveway for the weekend.
On Monday no messages and they have not appeared since.
    That rules out blown fuse(s).
Seems like poor connections to me.

    What is your take ?
  • gmcustsvcgmcustsvc Member Posts: 4,252
    Hello Montana999,
Unfortunately, I cannot diagnose your vehicle over the internet. Have you had the dealership diagnose the vehicle yet? If not I would recommend doing so and if they cannot read any codes when you are there to have them put the code reader in your vehicle. So when the problem occurs you can get the codes that come up. Thank you,

I have a 2006 SV6 with the power sliding doors. The problem that I found was with the contacts on the door ( They are called plungers) the movable pins were losing connection with the fixed part The plunger is very easy to replace if you can find one. The plungers are covered with a rubber cover and is held in place with 2 plastic pins. My Pontiac dealer could not even find one in his books or even a picture of one, and claimed that he had never had anyone come with a door problem. My Chevy dealer found it but said that it came with a wiring harness that is not needed for $154. The cure that I came up with was to take the plunger block apart (it snaps together)and replace the rusted out springs then solder 3" wires to the end of the plunger pins (they solder easy) to the tabs that go to the plug. It took about 30 min. now the doors work like new

Don't see too many SV6 owners. Which motor does yours have? Mine is the SV6 Sport with the 3.9L motor.
  • elibomelibom Member Posts: 9
I have the 3.9L eng ext body I had a 1999 Montana that I bought from a Pontiac dealer it had been thru 2 rental co's.and thru 2 owners when I got it. It had 70k mi on it and I put another 80k trouble free mi on it. That is why I bought the 2006 new, but it has had several problems with it The seats don't fold up like the 99. It doesn't drive as good and has always bounced in the rear It is not nearly as good of a van as the 1999.
  • swathdiverswathdiver Member Posts: 27
Also bought a used '99 with 50k and put another 100k on it. Even with the leaky manifold we never had a problem until right before we bought the 2006 brand new. I specc'd the 2006 and was ok without the middle row seats coming out as we bought it to take long road trips with which we have. Mine never bounced, has the air ride sport suspension. It's also an SV6 Sport with the big motor.

The main problem with it now is the transmission. When sitting at a light or moving from stop, the engine revs but van doesn't move and BANG, the tranny slams into gear. Had it in to the dealer 2x but they can never replicate what happens to us every 5 minutes in city driving.

So the main problem is really the dealerships! The trans is second!

Dealer charged my wife $190 to fix things under warranty and nobody will fess up and remove the charges. I had the car in the day before but had to leave because of family emergency and they didn't try that bs with me. ARGGHHH!!!

I bought this van used a week ago and already HATE IT WITH A PASSION. It is possessed. All the issues that is being described from the chimes to the doors is what we're experiencing today... whats next is my first thought~ Chevrolet, why isn't this being addressed with SO many website posts dedicated to the same issue????? I can't believe there isn't a class action suit regarding the Uplander. Or is there? Is there a customer service rep from GM that would like to address my issues??? It doesn't appear that having a vehicle in warranty is any better than buying used. It appears that if you buy the Uplander new or used you've inherited problems that GM is just simply going to ignore. We have a special needs child and two other children that have to ride in this vehicle. We live on one income and I can not afford to get rid of it a week later. If anyone has suggestions PLEASE contact me!

    Mariah,

My case number is 71-854277498. The service I've been receiving from your organization is worse the the dealership: Here is a record of it.

8/2/10 - Eric x 21022: Eric called saying he was my District Specialist. He said that I should not take the vehicle back to the dealership until they get their technicians involved.

8/3/10 - Eric x21022: I tried to call Eric back, but got his voicemail.

8/4/10 - Michael x21059: Michael called me to say that Eric is on vacation and that he would be filling in. Michael took my information (again) and said that he would call the dealership and get back to me by 8/9 with next steps. He instructed me not to contact the dealer and not to take the van in at this time

8/9/10: Kyle x 21356: Kyle called me to say that Eric left GM and that he would be my new District Specialist. Kyle said that he talked to the Dealership and that they were working to get in touch with the technician. That I should NOT take the vehicle in or contact the dealer until Kyle calls back

8/11/10: Kyle x 21356: Kyle calls me and doesn't realize that he talked to me on 8/9. He says the exact same thing that he said on 8/9. I told Kyle that I've had it and that I want to talk to his supervisor. He said talking to his supervisor wouldn't do any good. I said I wanted to find out about GM buying my car back, because it's a lemon. He said he would contact the GM buyback program. I asked him if I should continue to NOT contact the dealer and he's says that he nor anyone at his office would have told me to hold off on contacting the dealer. I told him that I didn't think he or his office is adding any value. He said I should just work with the dealership directly.

This has been a waste of the past 11 days. I have gone throughgh a merry-go-round of reps and received no real help and no progress.

What do you propose I do now?
    Brian

I have also had so many problems. The biggest one is that my in-service date for my van is different by over 1 year. I bought my vehicle new off the show room floor and they are trying to tell me I purchased it 14 months before I did. I actually had to sue GM because since the in-service dates were wrong they would not do a buy back because it did not fall under lemon law, even though it should have. I still have the vehicle, but have been able to get it fixed so it no longer chimes, nor does the door open while driving. They had to take out some of the foam where the door closes and replace the contacts. I had a major run around with GM and even though they said they wanted to do everything they could to make me happy they did not even try to start helping me until I had a lawyer contact them. I still have issues with my lights flickering and the car knocking at different times, but at least the door is fixed!

There is an easy fix for the door chiming, if you have an electrical person that can solder some wires for you See #175

Howdy folks! For some time the transmission in our 2006 Pontiac Montana SV6 had been acting up. Pressing the gas at a traffic light, the motor would rev and nothing would happen then, BANG, and off it’d go. Our old dealership could never replicate the problem but we moved before I could get insistent. I diagnosed this problem as a worn input clutch piston; thank you Triple Edge Performance!

With less then 100 miles left on the GMPP extended warranty we needed to find a new dealer and get it checked out! My wife picked one that had a rental car policy that wouldn’t cost us too much out of pocket and we brought the SV6 in to have the transmission checked and some other gripes taken care of. They replaced a number of interior parts and the catalytic converter but could not replicate the problem with the 4T65E.

We grabbed the transmission mechanic, threw him in the front passenger seat and headed off for a demonstration drive. Turning out of the drive it went BANG, and then a few more times before he said he would take it apart. Before returning, the transmission went BANG six more times.

A week later our Montana was ready and when I asked what the culprit inside the transmission was the mechanic said it was the input clutch piston. The SV6 Sport runs like a champ and the fuel mileage has already shown a definite improvement. Thank you Wallace Cadillac!

Just here to let Mariah and GM and America know that our van still isn't fixed. We lost our van for Memorial Day and Independence day and now, we have a loaner for Labor Day. We've spent the summer making endless trips to the dealer, trying to get help from GM customer service and we've made absolutely no progress. Vehicle is still under warranty and the most help ive received from GM is suggesting I take it to another GM dealer.

Anybody out there have any suggestions on how to get GM to get motivated to fix our van.
  • chevyjaxchevyjax Member Posts: 12
I think it is time to talk to a lawyer. There is a federal law that allows you to sue the company for breech of warranty. It would not hurt to at least get some information to see what can be done to help.
  • boilerguy1boilerguy1 Member Posts: 5
That's what I was starting to think.
Mariah: What's your thoughts? Does a long time, loyal GM cusomter, need to source an attorney to get GM to take some action on this?
  • stillcrazystillcrazy Member Posts: 7
First instance was driving on the Interstate at night in light rain and I lost the headlights. After investigation, I suspected the SWITCH and found that it is a well known problem that the switch and connector cannot handle the load and melt down. This is a safety issue but there is no safety recall... ? And the wiring is shared by the chevy fleet.

    Hello Boilerguy1,
While I cannot advise on whether or not you should contact a lawyer I can assure you that the agent and the dealer you're working with are doing everything in their power to get the vehicle fixed. Your agent should be contacting you tomorrow. Thank you,

Fire the dealer and take it to another. Find one that needs the work. Maybe those guys aren't hungry enough. Talk directly with the mechanics.

Did you check your receipts and see if they replaced the same part as mine? Have you tried cleaning the contacts or adjusting the rear striker?

Have had 2006 uplander in shop 5 times since Nov of 09. Notified GM and they had me take it back to the dealer to get fixed........two weeks later, same problems. Sliding doors not working properly and usually won't close. THEN....the drivers side sliding door opens while we are going down the road. I have seven school aged children---scary! Have been advised by legal council to try to get with other owners with this problem (I have found there are many) and file suit in behalf of all of us. May take awhile but he also said to get in touch with the media which may help. It is sad to spend this kind of money for something that won't work and they can't seem to fix. Thanks

If it was not for the fact that I already filed suite over similar problems with my vehicle, I would do it again. I have a 2007 that was doing the same thing. I did have it fixed a few months ago after about 18 months of taking it to the shop repeatedly. I also took video of the door coming open while driving and presented it to my lawyer for evidence. Make sure you have your documentation, it will help your case!

If I did not owe so much on the vehicle I would trade it in for something else, but dealers do not want them, they know about the problems.

You can contact me at njones60@hotmail.com if you need more information to further your lawsuit. I too had the door open while I was driving, multiple times. And frequently when the car was parked and locked. GM's response that "it wasn't a big deal to have it open while driving as long as I have my kids seat-belted in" was the last straw. Someone is going to get hurt.

I wish someone had stolen it when it would sit in my driveway with the door open. I probably would have gotten more from insurance than their buy-back. But apparently even car thieves know better than to boost this vehicle. :)

My 2005 Uplander (89,000 miles) will not start. Getting the DIC message of "service theft system" and sometimes "staring disabled" when the key is on. Tried all 3 keys and the same. Also have another issue in that the parking inidcator light on the dash will not go off even after the key is removed or in the off position. This drains the battery so I have to remove the battery cables. Seems like all the functions work, ie, radio, windows, mirrors, lights, etc. Just can't get past the no start condition. Suspect that the BCM is causing this. Appreciate if someone can anyone lend some insight before I have it towed to the dealer?

    Spike99,
Can you tell us what was the final solution to your draining battery problem? How was it fixed? thanks, Rod
  • spike99spike99 Member Posts: 239
    Almost missed your inquire...

To make a long story short (after 2nd dealer visit - from dead battery incident), they discovered its factory battery had 1 bad cell. And, it would also self drain itself - after sitting parked for 3+ full days. They replaced the factory battery (under warranty) and our van has been working great ever since. One -45 C (which is -45 F as well) morning, our other vehicle didn't start. But our GM van with its new battery "fired right up". Glad they changed the battery and all is now working great....

While driving my uplander i turned on the AC. I started to smell smoke so I looked for a place to pull over and I also shut off the AC. The AC did not turn off it was stuck on full speed. By the time I pulled over and came to a complete stop there was heavy smoke and light flame coming from the Dash close to the front window. I opened the doors and pulled my two kids out to safety and looked back at the dash there was only heavy smoke at this time. I called 911 and popped the hood to see if it was coming from the engine compartment, there was no fire in the engine compartment. By this time the entire dash board was on fire and it was spreading to the steering wheel and over head material. It took less than a minute for the entire interior to catch on fire. There were no warning signs prior to turning on the AC and there were no obvious mechanical problems with the car. Has anyone else had this happen to them or know of any other fires like this?
  • swathdiverswathdiver Member Posts: 27
Thank goodness you and the children are ok! Hasn't happened to me. I am curious as to the source of the ignition, will there be any investigation? If so please keep us informed as many here have the same type of vehicle.

Yes there is an investigation the fire was on Sunday May 22. Both the fire department and insurance company are trying to figure out the source. Not sure if you are allowed to post youtube links here but this is the fire http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yHhIjIjZ64&feature=related . I find it amazing how fast the fire spread. This video starts about 20 seconds after we got out of the car.

I am considering to buy a 2008 Uplander with 3.9L engine and manual sliding side doors. How is the reliability of this model? I know about the Uplander's electrical problems, but they predominantly concern the alternator/charging system with the 3.5L engine in 2005 and the power sliding doors for all model years. Is this assessment correct? Any constructive comments are most welcome.

I have a 2007 extended WB. It weighs too much. It has 6 bolt wheels (a tip off) Front brakes had a manufacturer rotor problem. Turning radius is terrible if you live in the city. Rear vision and backing up is restricted. Rear tires last only 10000 miles even after two aligns. Worst problem has been electrical. Battery failure,Dealer replaced. Headlight switch failure causing loss of headlights while on Interstate at night in rain. Replacement will fail for same reason original did without redesign. The seats are way too heavy and difficult to remove. Their latching system is also difficult. All in all, I have owned Chevy Vans since the 80's and this will be my last.
Thank goodness I do not have power side doors. ... they stay shut.
  • njones60njones60 Member Posts: 10
I'm no mechanic at all, so I can't speak to the cause of the electrical problems in my 05, but I know that they were severe. Additionally, like the other poster said, it's a heavy vehicle, tough to manuever, awful turn radius, goes through brakes and tires WAY too fast, and I had to replace the transmission in the first 6 months of owning it (I purchased it new). If a person must buy an Uplander, at least you're getting one with manual doors! :)

I bought an 07 Toyota Sienna and absolutely LOVE it. Even with 100k miles on it, it drives like a dream and just needs standard maintenance.

Unless you're getting your Uplander for a steal, I personally would not recommend it.
  • jpfjpf Member Posts: 496
My wife and I decided to take the plunge and will trade in our 2006 4 cylinder Dodge Caravan (with close to 80k miles) for a 2007 Uplander LT, SWB (with 55k miles). We paid $6,750 (excl. taxes) plus the trade-in. The Uplander has 10 months of powertrain warranty left. The dealer did a lot of warranty work on it to prep it for sale (head gasket, sway bar, wheel bearings). I want to get 4 years and 60k miles out of this vehicle. I like the comfort of the LT trim, power of the V6, and that the rear seat folds flat on the floor. With the Caravan we kept the rear seat out and it takes up a lot of space in our apartment. It's a hassle always to put it back in. Read the posts of the many problems with the Uplander; hope this one is not as problematic as some.

has anyone tried adding the capacitor in circuit to reduce the dimming of lights ? the bulletin is ....
#05-06-03-003C: Headlamps/Headlights and/or Interior Lights Flicker Intermittently (Replace Generator Voltage Regulator) - (Mar 30, 2007)

It mentions adding a capacitor and metal shielding, anyone try it?

    ""Recommendation/Instructions:
To repair the intermittent dimming and/or light flicker use nickel\aluminum tape part number 10184916 or equivalent. The entire battery (B+) cable to the generator should be shielded from the ignition control module. Furthermore, an 8-inch piece of the nickel\aluminum tape needs to be placed along the front of the ignition control module to shield it from the spark plug wires.

Important Note: A 10,000 pico farad capacitor needs to be installed on Circuit 225 (L terminal) to ground.""

If you have automatic sliding doors on your Uplander, and you are having problems with the doors opening when you are driving, look in your Operators Manual on page 2-6 and you will read this:
"If the sliding door is clsed and the powersliding door button on the transmitter is accidently pressed and held, the vehicle doors will be unlocked and the the power sliding door will open. If the power sliding door has been locked using the manual door lock lever, you will need to unlock the power sliding door before it can be opened with the remote keyless entry transmitter sliding door button." This might be the remedy for your problem.

I have a 2006 Uplander, but I do not have the automatic closing slide doors so the doors do not open, however, if you look in your operators manual on page 2-6 (also 2-16) you will find a paragraph that reads:
"If the sliding door is closed and the power sliding door button on the transmitter is pressed and held, the vehicle's doors will be unlocked and then the power sliding door will open. If the power sliding door has beeen locked using the maual door lock lever, you will need to unlock the power sliding door before it can be opened with the remote keyless entry transmitter sliding door button." I hope this will help.

My Uplander was a 2006, it ran great. I used to buy only Chevy but after owning the Uplander, I have now bought a KIA. Their warranty is 10 years 100k, which shows the faith they have in their cars, Chevy does not. Mine was a LS-3. It had electric door issues, which was not as bad as the constant issues I had with the breaks. It is my family car and being able to stop is a real plus, I was sick and tired of the ABS light, which they blamed on a poorly routed wiring harness that I had to pay for since the warranty was over. Their fix lasted for 3 weeks and the problem came back.

The worst was the intermittent check engine light and when I took it in to get it checked they did not find anything. This is the first time I have heard of a computer in a vehicle losing or clearing its own codes. I also suggested that it may have a faulty computer and the GM repair center people basically told me that I was nuts. I replaced the 4.3 engine in my 1985 Astro with a 1997 4.3, this required that I swap the computers and rewire the van.

The issues I had with the Uplander was the last straw and even though I have, until recently, only considered owning Chevy, I will not buy another one unless they start making their cars better.

I have completely fixed the issues of flickering lights and "charging system failure".
The factory battery terminals are extremely poor quality. My Husband just replaced mine ($15) and my 2005 Uplander is as good as gold! And coming from a van that I had to jump start daily to leave my home.. I'd say problem officially solved!!!
  • smcgaughysmcgaughy Member Posts: 2
I was having electrical issues (flickering lights, battery saver mode activated, charging system failure) with my 2005 Chevrolet Uplander and the problem escalated to the point that I was jump starting my van daily to take my Daughter to school!
Upon searching the internet I found literally 1000's of posts from people with the exact same issues! Numerous people were taking their vans to mechanics only to find zero mechanical issues. People were even going as far as replacing the alternator and serpentine belts.
With zero option to go to a mechanic, my Husband ( not a mechanic, yet very savvy with vehicles) noticed the the BATTERY TERMINALS were unlike any he had seen before. They were highly corroded and after a good cleaning, my van ran fine for an entire day.. The next morning however, My van was completely dead. It would usually "try" to start. The interior lights worked fine but would flicker and upon ignition, the engine would only click and the gauges would hop up and down. He then said it had to be something with those terminals. The next day he bought new battery terminals ($15) and a new battery ($110), (the daily jump starting had worn mine down) and now my van is completely fixed!!!! I really hope this helps those who are having issues with their 2005 - 2008 Chevy Uplanders!

The ABS light came on the other day and it has been off ever since. My Uplander does not have the Stabiltrak. The owner's manual says to bring it in and have it checked out if the light stays on. Since it has not come back on, is it safe to assume nothing needs to be done? I haven't noticed any change in braking, but brakes squeak a bit. Any advice is appreciated.
  • gmcustsvcsarahgmcustsvcsarah Member Posts: 1,964
    Good morning jpf,

It sounds as though your light was effectively reset; perhaps the best thing to do right now would be to keep an eye out for it. When the light stays on is when the ABS system is not working at all (as you're likely aware).

Let us know if you would like for us to check into anything for you (warranty/recall information, etc).

I just replaced the original equipment spark plugs and wires on our '06 Uplander with 105,300 miles. The engine rolls forward quite easily, but holding it forward is the key to this procedure. I did not have a ratcheting strap available to roll the engine forward & hold it in position. I was, however, able to use a long pry-bar to move the engine forward and held it there with some heavy duty bailing wire. In order to have better access to the rear plugs, I removed the coil pack and mounting plate. Once those were out of the way, I could stand on a short step ladder and lean over the engine and get to the rear plugs. After new AC Delco Iridium plugs and Duralast wire set were in place, everything went back without any glitches, for less than $80.00. :)
