I had the same issue the recall states "it may be possible for your vehicle to lose forward and reverse power while driving, due to worn splines in the transmission torque converter"
The mechanic told me this caused shavings to be throughout the whole transmission and he HAD to replace it.
What am I to do? Any advice??? PLEASE:(
This is what I read on the Ford website;
Safety Recall 11S25 Freestar and Monterey Torque Converter Replacement
Ford Motor Company issued Safety Recall 11S25 for 2004 and 2005 Ford Freestar and Mercury minivans built between March, 2003 and May, 2005 for a possible loss of forward and reverse power due to a torque converter malfunction caused by stripped pump drive splines. Torque converter parts were not initially available at the time of the initial announcement, and customers were advised that parts were expected to become available during the 2nd quarter 2012, and that they would be re-notified when parts were available.
Beginning June 29th 2012, all dealerships and some customers will be re-notified via letters that parts are becoming available to complete 11S25. Letters will be mailed to customers over the course of several weeks, allowing for parts availability to further improve and dealers to complete repairs in an organized manner. Customers who are experiencing a current concern with their torque converter, or desire to have 11S25 completed prior to receiving the re-notification letter, should contact their dealership for part availability and repair scheduling.
Owners with a receipt and a repair order showing torque converter replacement are eligible for a refund. Refunds will be provided for reasonable and customary torque converter replacement costs – up to $1450. Customers seeking a refund should provide the original receipt and the repair order to their dealership for reimbursement consideration – it is not necessary to wait for the re-notification letter. Customers receiving a refund will have completed the 11S25 program and a repair will not be performed. A transmission repair or assembly replacement that does not clearly indicate that the torque converter was replaced will not receive a refund, but will receive a torque converter replacement at no charge under the 11S25 program.
If a vehicle should unexpectedly lose power due to torque converter malfunction, it remains readily controllable; the vehicle will coast during which it can be safely maneuvered and parked. Because the engine continues to run, steering and braking are unaffected, and the electrical system and directional signals remain functional. The transmission park system also remains fully functional. If your vehicle is experiencing a problem related to this recall, please schedule a service appointment with your preferred Ford or Lincoln dealership .
If you have any other questions, please contact the Ford Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.
:confuse:
This is my 1st and last Ford.
Rip off is right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought my 04 van in 2005, used, from a Ford dealer, but haven't been back since.
In an e-mail to and from Ford, I was promised information on a refund since the work was already done. My invoice just states transmission, but the converter is part of the trans. How can Ford find a problem with that?
I'm really surprised that no class action has been started - yet.
Has anyone recieved a check yet and how long is it taking from the time you put the claim in?
Our family was traveling between Seattle and Saint Louis when our transmission went out on a gas stop. It was late on a Sunday evening deep in Montana (ranked second to last in population density right above ALASKA) and we were over 100 miles out of Billings. Despite having AAA, there wasn't even a tow company within distance to take our car into town if our lives had literally depended on it. This vehicle had 75,000 miles on it. We had already replaced the engine. I should have taken that as a clue and sold the :lemon: while I had the chance!
We had the same cascading failure as everyone else. The torque converter blew and that threw metal shavings into the transmission. We had both replaced on the advice of the transmission shop in Billings. The rebuilt transmission had to be shipped in, so we are out the cost of the transmission and torque converter and the cost of nearly a weeks worth of hotel stay because of the wait. We got some compensation from AAA for the hotel stay but it doesn't cover it completely. Now I have paid for replacement of both components and will only be repaid for one.
If I had my way, Ford would be buying this vehicle back from me at 100% the cost I paid for it and I would buy something from a more reputable company. I've been a loyal Ford customer since before I could drive (Dad bought all Fords). Looks like it's time to vote with my wallet... as soon as I have enough money after sinking it all into this rotting pit of a van.
Sore in Saint Louis.

I also would like an apology for the customer service supervisor who tried to convince me that losing your transmission on a busy 6 lane highway isn't dangerous because you "can coast and steer". :confuse: Would anyone at Ford corporate want to drive their family around in my van right now? I doubt it.
Two years ago, the engne light came on and I had to take the van into Ford.....I cannot stand dealerships....I had a extended warranty on the van...After a week they told me that the radiator had leaked water into the transmisiion and was rusting it out.....they would replace it with a new transmission.....What a crock that was....they installed a rebuilt transmission., the cruise control was not working and the traction light would not go off. I was told by the service advisor if I wanted it checked out, it would cost me $90 to look at it and then whatever charge would apply to repair this problem...Told him they had my van for three weeks and I had to pay $600 over the warranty charge....did he care????what a joke...it also costs me $650 to rent a car as they do not provide courtesy cars....My van only has 56000 miles.....and now I get this friggin letter about a recall? I am going to drive this van into the ground and then never buy another Ford product
Now I cannot find the recall letter...does anyone know if the dealership has a copy????
I purchased my van in CT and then moved to NC..Perhaps I should go back to Ford Corporate..............
Lynn
Glad that is over! Hope many of you are equally successful.

I have reported to Ford on March 2012 after the 1st recall letter regarding the torque converter recall which my van was experiencing early stages of this problem but Ford told me I had to wait for a second letter.
On May 2012, I called them again and told them my Van is worse and experiencing hard movement. Again Ford tells me I must wait for the second letter via mail which should be mailed to me by mid June 2012.
During this time, I took my van for an oil change at Jiffy Lube. One of the tech discovers something wrong with the transmission oil. He said it looked water and the dip stick appeared rusty like there was moisture. I couldn't understand how that was possible. But I had notified that the trans oil was changed in the past and it wasn't up yet for another change.
My van worsen while 1st week of July still I have not received any 2nd letter. I called them and they said the letter was sent out and I can take it to any Ford. I am upset that I never received this 2nd letter.
Finally, my van gets check and replacement was done to the torque converter but mechanic also noted that the transmission fluid is burnt.
I drive my van out thinking finally I saved my minivan a trans break down. BOY WAS I HOPING TO HARD!. As soon as I left my van still show the same warnings and symptoms. No change at all. I called Ford Service center and told them about it. The tech say "Oh, you are probably having other transmission problems not associated with the torque converter. This expense is not covered by the recall."
Does anyone know anything about a recall regarding moisture and transmission damages as I mentioned above? If so, what year was that recall? How can I get a copy so that I can get this fixed? Or would the transmission damages caused by a torque converter covered by the recall?
