Lexus LS 400/LS 430 Instrument Panel Questions

  • I have similar dash problem. How did you have it fixed for $600? Where? My dealer quoted me $1000 for the new board and $500 for installation. You got a great deal!

I have a 2006 LS 430 front end damage. I fixed damaged with a 2005 LS 430 front clip. The car has some electrical issues. Is the wiring on 2006 & 2005 LS 430 the same?

I have the current problem with my Lexus LS 400 1994 and I was quoted $1000 to repair. They said that it would start effecting the actual engine if I do not repair it soon. Now that I see that you had it done for $600 I better start checking around, Thanks
  • I had same problem, $95 but you have to mail your instrument cluster to a gentleman in MN. Lifetime warranty does great work free shipping about 2-3 days you could even do it cheaper if you want to buy parts and solder yourself. you can buy instrument cluster repair on EBAY, I believe you search 1990-94 Lexus LS400 instrument panel cluster repair.
  • Hello nadolap

Do you have a name and address of the repair shop in Minnesota who did the dashboard repair? thanks loads.
  • I found removal instructions online, sent the circuit boards to TheLexpert in California. He rebuilt them and the dash and instrument cluster on my 94 LS400 works great now. It fixed all the related issues with the electrical systems. He is at this link on Ebay. -/140607508881?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3ALexus&hash=item- 20bcdc5191

I have a 1999 Lexus LS 400 with 40,000 miles on it. I have been having problems with the speedometer and tachometer during the warmer months (which we're entering right now in Houston, TX) for a few years now. I've been getting the car inspected in May (and driving it on the freeway for a few days before that) to get the speedometer and tachometer to work.

At this point, the speedometer works fine, but not the tachometer. I don't think I can pass TX state inspection this way, so I'm trying to run the car on the freeway more often. Back in about Jan-Feb of 2014, I got a new battery, and the gauges ran fine after that for a while (long enough for me to ace the May 2014 inspection).

My question: is it likely that freeway driving would cause the tachometer to reset, when the speedometer is working? And if not, what would be my options? I read (on; can't find it any more) about something someone purchased through for a little over $80 (this may be an old post) and had his mechanic install for $25? How about that?

Ever have the codes pulled? An auto store like AutoZone will usually pull them for free. Ever have any cranking or stalling issues? (Sounds very rare, but people have issues with the crankshaft position sensor affecting the tach).

I don't see any reports of the needle actually sticking in the housing (that happened to me on my old Nissan).

Lot of possibilities here. One poster on Club Lexus attributes his speedo and tach maladies (erratic, on again off again) to a problem in the ECU board. It makes for interesting reading, although it might be beyond the normal DIY skill levels.

You may have also lost the tach signal to the instrument cluster, or there could be a problem in the cluster itself.

I'd recommend surfing the Club Lexus board for more ideas and also giving these speedo/tach specialists a call and seeing what they say. I haven't done business with them but they seem very helpful:

Not sure if you need a tach to pass smog. That's also worth checking with your state authorities.

Thanks, stever, and especially Mr. Shiftright, for the information. That's an interesting comment about having the codes pulled, but I didn't really think the car would pass inspection like this. However, it appears in TX that it does, as I called a place that does inspections (with a $5 off coupon), and the man there said that a stuck tachometer "would not cause it to fail". Takes a load off my mind (assuming it's true, which I think it is). Thanks again all.
