    Greetings.

I currently have a 2011 Forester X 4EAT on a lease that ends in a few weeks and I went to a dealership to test drive an XT to see the difference in power. They offered me a number for a lease on an XT Touring and I'm curious to know if it's a good deal.

Please note two things...we didn't negotiate a price or discuss a cap cost AND while the MSRP is $34k, the dealer had added a warranty package of $600 and a $450+/- pinstriping job to the car. Those two dealer-added "options" were, sadly, on every vehicle they had on the lot.

    • 2015 Subaru Forester XT Touring
    • New Jersey
    • MSRP $34k -or- $35k with dealer-added "options"
    • Negotiated Price/Net Cap Cost = not discussed
    • 36 month lease
    • 15k miles per year
    • $3000 down (includes registration, fees, tax, and 1st months payment)
    • $400 per month (includes tax)
    • part of the deal includes them taking in my 2011 thereby eliminating my need to pay $1k out of pocket in disposition and (over) mileage fees.

I'm hoping someone can advise whether this is a good/decent deal with the info given.

    Thanks!

Without a negotiated price / net cap cost it's hard to evaluate the quote.

The residual and MF for the 2015 XT Touring are 59% and .00135 - review the numbers to ensure that the dealer isn't marking up the MF on you.

I'd also check for a dealer that didn't automatically add $1000 worth of accessories to every car - that alone adds $28/mo to your payment for a 36 month lease.

Thank you for your reply. I'm going to call them first thing tomorrow and ask about both the MF and cap cost. I'm comfortable with the monthly cost, but if there's a way to save some money a month, I want to take advantage.

Agreed about the add ons, but sadly they're the only dealership in my immediate area that has the exact model and color I want. Seems that XT's are a rare breed around here.

Keep us posted ... how far away are the next closest dealers? Perhaps a road trip is in order - a few hours to save $1000 works out to a healthy hourly rate.

I definitely will. There are two other dealers that are even closer or same distance, but their stock bares no XT's.

Alternatively, what's the RV and MF for a 2015 Forester XT Premium? I'm going to give the Costco Auto program a shot and put in for an XT Premium. Seeing as it's a lease, I don't think I need all the bells and whistles.

    Thanks for your help!

    Thanks for that info!

So being I got more info for my original question, let's try this again:

    • 2015 Subaru Forester XT Touring
    • New Jersey
    • MSRP $34k
    • Negotiated Price = $32,900
    • 36 month lease
    • 15k miles per year
    • $3000 down (includes registration, fees, tax, and 1st months payment)
    • $400 per month (includes tax)
    • part of the deal includes them taking in my 2011 thereby eliminating my need to pay $1k out of pocket in disposition and (over) mileage fees.

The guy i'm working with said the MF was .00324 which is nearly double what you had quoted! I'm assuming $400pm is way more than it should be for this vehicle. What kind of numbers do you get? I'm not overly savvy with this, so please pardon my ignorance. Thanks!

When I use the MSRP and negotiated price you've provided, along with the 59% residual and .00135 MF, I get a payment of $428.16/mo for 36 months.

In NJ, tax for the entire lease is calculated up front and is either paid at lease inception or rolled into the cap cost. I wonder if the $32,900 already includes the tax, or if it's being paid out of the $3000 down.

Hello thanks to forum for the assist as we took delivery last eve.  2015 2.5 premium with msrp of $26782 and invoice of $25100.  Monthly payment of $280 on a 36 mos 10k lease.  Due at signing was $422 broken down as first mos pmt plus title and plate fee in wi.  Dealer rolled 595 acq fee, 189 doc fee, 89 govt fee into lease.  The negotiated price was invoice less the 2% holdback plus the roll ins.  How did we do? Since we took the holdback out of dealers pocket , I could not readily ID where they were making any money outside the 189 doc fee? Was there any lease cash?

  • jimziggjimzigg Member Posts: 62

On the above deal I forgot to mention that the payment of $280 includes 5.6% wi sales tax.

    .00127 MF and 60% residual for 2.5i

.00132 MF and 61% residual for Premium

    24 month leases aren't competitive..

15K/yr is the highest offered. If you drive more than that, then leasing may not be for you.

Hi, I got a quote of 25336 for VIP pricing - equal to dealer invoice supposedly (taxes & fees not included). 0.00182 mf and 61% residual for 2.5i premium CVT (had all weather package (no eyesight)) 36 months lease. Adding 6.5% tax and USD 300 fees bought the per month to USD 350 (inline with what was quoted by the dealer, they didn't give me any paperwork in hand). Is this a good quote for VIP pricing?
    Thanks

With your numbers, I get a pre-tax payment of $320.56, so $350 with tax seems about right.

2015? Seems high. With MF of .00117 and residual of 64%, I get a payment of around $254/mo. Adding in $1500 for acquisition fee and taxes (I assumed around 8%), the payment is around $296/mo.

Ask them for the CAP cost.

Most calculators can't account for taxes that are paid upfront and added to the CAP cost. How much are you assuming for taxes? Or, maybe I made a mistake..

Taxes have to be added into the CAP cost in NY.. If we have a solid CAP cost number, we can calculate... I can't get back to the number I had before, so I probably had an input error, as well. (maybe an extra zero in my MF).

When a good time to trade in the leased car assuming you have already built over $2000 in equity as a result of ultra low mileage? Run most of the lease term and trade in towards the end of the term. i am already at 25th month currently with only 18000 miles on a 36 month lease - NJ - 2013 Subaru premium .

You can jump over to the "Real World Trade in Values" discussion to see what your current car is worth. Then, get a payoff from the finance company to determine exactly how much equity you have - that information gives you leverage with your dealer on the new car.

@KYFDX: thanks a ton. This helps a lot. But, the MF converted to Interest rate is a bit north of 3%. Is it possible to work with my local bank and go to dealer with offered price and nothing else or do I need to go through dealer's bank?
Secondly, Is there an acquisition fee for Subaru? I know that the dealers charge $300 for disposition fee.

@KYFDX: thanks a ton. This helps a lot. But, the MF converted to Interest rate is a bit north of 3%. Is it possible to work with my local bank and go to dealer with offered price and nothing else or do I need to go through dealer's bank?

Subaru has a $595 acquisition fee for all leases.

The lease numbers we quote are from Subaru Motors Finance - I'm not sure I understand your reference to your local bank. Dealers can choose from multiple finance sources for a lease, but the only numbers we can verify are from Subaru.

You won't get a better rate from an independent bank.. negotiate the lowest selling price possible.. Also, it's the bank that charges the disposition fee, not the dealer.
