Yeah, Taos is too small for my wife. And even ABQ is too cold for me in the winter (lol, Las Cruces barely cuts it). All great spots to visit though, and the amenities in Santa Fe would be nice.

Anyone else on the road for June?

My phone is telling me it's a toasty 100 in Las Cruces at the moment. And 91 in Santa Fe.

But only 73 here in Colorado.

Wife decided that if we were to move to Santa Fe, she'd want to live in the neighborhood around Canyon Road.

First time I saw Canyon Road in the late 60s, it was dirt and dust. Couldn't see the attraction nor could understand why some galleries had moved out there. Times change. So do body thermostats. :)

We're sort of art aficianados, but I think the idea is that she wants the "feel" of Santa Fe, not living in the burbs away from the city center. I told her that the town is 400+ years old, and that the streets obviously pre-date wheeled transport in some cases.

Did the bypass but missed the first mile or so of Santa Fe. Lots of traffic in Santa Fe. Still love the area - so much going on around there. We even like Espanola which isn't high on lots of people's lists. Spent $75 at the non-profit weaving shop there. :)

Farina Pizza was the lunch stop in ABQ on a section of the old Route 66. Excellent.

Our good friends moved to Chimayo a couple years ago and love it. About 8 miles from the Casino in Espanola with great breakfast. I don't like the elevation.

Oh yeah, you mentioned that before. I like the area but the winters are colder than I want. Several great rug galleries in Chimayo too. Haven't been to the casinos in Espanola, although I got gas at one right in town this morning. The overloaded van did struggle maintaining 75 going up a hill that topped out at 6,800 feet leaving town. ;)

Why? Because it may have green chiles and roasted corn as toppings?

Could be. In Wisconsin I've seen them put pineapple on them. I'll deny I said it but it was pretty good.

In the Midwest and West, a pizza with pineapple and Canadian bacon is called a Hawaiian. I'm not sure on the east coast because for whatever reason I really like plain cheese when I get a foldable crust. Something about that grease content I guess. I prefer peperoni and pineapple myself (belch). Now in Chicago I'll always go with a Chicago sausage pizza. Making me hungry Fezo! Now turning to hot dogs, I like Nathan's, but only when it's prepared like Chicago - boiled instead of grilled. Well, that's today's culinary lesson B)

We have four Nathan's to grill with the trout tonight.

Are you sure that ABQ pizza stop wasn't Pizza Hut with it's new hotdog crust? BTW - shouldn't a Yooper be grilling Brats ;)
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Heh, I was a "Hoofer" for a few months in MadTown but the brat habit didn't stick. Likely because I don't like beer. Did learn to use a wok on the Weber after that experience though. Great for backyard Mongolian BBQs.

    G'day

I actually rather like how foreign cuisine adapts to locally available produce. The Hawaiian Pizza is an Australian staple food, especially for kids. When ordering pizza for a party, the pretty standard order is "One Meatlovers, one Hawaiian, one Capriciosa and a side of garlic bread".

Australia, especially Melbourne where I live, has a huge Italian culture and food features heavily. Actually, I should mention that we also have a massive Greek culture (Melbourne is supposedly the third largest Greek city in the world), Macedonian and heaven knows how many different Asian. We love food, coffee and beer!
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
Australia is a beautiful country that I think shares some similarities with the US. Many early immigrants and a wide variety of scenery across the country. Sounds like it has the wide spread in food too.

A joke line I have heard about Oz is "Arkansas with a beach".

Kind of like Canada, very diverse, some city dwellers who think they are sophisticated Europeans when they are far from it, and lots of people in flyover areas who seem kind of Americanish.
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,384
Never made it to Melbourne but a few decades ago my brother lived in Sydney for a year and a few of us decided how often would we know someone in Australia so off we went. Great, great city. Spent some tie out i the wild with the kangaroos, saw a platypus in the zoo (at the time one of only two in captivity), ate and drank ourselves silly (Australian wines are wonderful and I'm not normally a big wine drinker).

Would dearly love to go back.

Have you been to the Redneck Riviera in the AL and FL panhandle B)

Destin used to be my go-to beach when I was growing up. Stayed at the Flamingo, aka the FleaMo. After I got in my 20s, I did hit the beaches on the Arkansas Buffalo River for ~7 years in a row.

I rather liked the "Arkansas with Beaches" line and found where it came from http://i.imgur.com/XL3FZVS.png It is described as the world's most offensive map, although displaying some remarkable truisms!

That's right! I forgot about that, it cracked me up back in the day. Offensive often means there's truth behind it - definitely true on much of that map per my experiences in NA and Europe anyway. I remember showing that to a Sri Lankan friend, who didn't like being lumped together with India. Funny.

Take a nice road trip in NA, you can see a variety from freaks to stoners and everything in between.

    There's Jackpot Nevada, for example.

Hilarious road trip story detailing our recent long term purchase up in Boise - a genuine Yugo.

1989 Yugo GVL Long Term Road Test: The Balkan Bullet

Doing the drive back to Taos in the morning with a detour to Mora before hitting the big resort. Gonna dogsit for our off-grid friends for a week. The transmission is clunking a bit shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse. Maybe if we can kill this van I'll get more excited about buying something new. At least I know a good mechanic up there now, LOL.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Heading up the road for a week, easy trip since most everything we need is waiting for us at our friend's house. So a light load (for us) in the van. I suppose downsizing to a hatch will be manageable. Maybe....

As long as you aren't overly fond of using your rearview mirror, you should be just fine in a hatch! ;)

It would have to be a good size hatch to fit that bench.

He can't help hauling all that crap around. He spent time as a Yooper, so it was either that or putting it around the yard - just kidding ;) I'll warn you Stever, we downsized from a minivan to a CRV and while the Honda is nice, we have regretted the loss of space. That Soul will be smaller yet.

I came close to buying yet another loom at a bargain price a couple of hours ago. It would have fit in the van with some rearranging. The big problem is that it wouldn't fit in the garage at home, much less the house.

It's a good thing I don't have @fintail's dash cam. I'd have to upload ~8 hours of gorgeous Western scenery to YouTube if I did. We went the "back" way via Alamogordo, brunch at Carrizozo, and on to Las Vegas to Mora to Taos, mostly via US 54. It was just one of those beautiful days with mountains all over and those ten mile long desert vistas.

Way too quiet in here and this should be prime tripping time, unless your kids are back in school already.

Anyone been on the road lately?

I was hoping to make a drive to CA to celebrate my dad's 80th birthday, but buying a new house quashed those plans.

If I go, I'll probably fly.

My cat trip (9 hours each way t Woodstock, Ontario) is still a possibility. If I can find a cat with enough cuteness locally it could save me a ton....

I see you going solo, in the Miata, and returning with the cat harnessed and leashed, with the top down.

Now that would be a road trip.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,092
I'll probably be going down to Oregon sometime in the next month or so, maybe BC too. I'll also be doing some driving in Europe, but not for another couple months.
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,384
Dang. That would be. However I could probably set up sleeping quarters for me and the cat (Tim Horton if a boy - after all he is from Ontario) in the 5.

Tim Horton's - now there is a restaurant chain I just don't get. Do people mostly write about them as a joke or something? My experience has always been a consistent mediocre and a bit odd. But it would make a funny name for a Canadian cat (just to keep it clear, we're not talking Asian cuisine ;) )

I like the mcdonalds coffee and eggwhite delight sandwich, and especially FREE WIFI on roadtrips. I've saved $1k per year by replacing both my iphone and home phone with a pair of "free smartphones" which I sometimes call "Obamaphones"! They are from 'scratch wireless' and are on sprint network with no monthly fee, providing: free VOIP, free SMS-text on sprint, and free MMS-text over-wifi.

This. I had to go over to Mumbai a few years back, what a horrible, horrible place.

As for road trips, I was trying to finagle a road trip from NC to Oregon last month to help a friend out who needed a car swap but he wasn't up for it.

Well, you wouldn't want to be in Oregon at the moment. The whole state is on fire, and it's pretty tough to breathe right now.
