Oil level was the first things I checked, it's near the max line. I change it every 4k miles. The oil pressure gauge reads a bit low, though. It's always in the NORMAL range but doesn't go up more than about 1/4 way. Don't know whether that's normal or not.

I poured a bottle of SLICK50 into the gastank and the knocking is almost gone now so it might have been some deposit after all.

We bought a '93 Ford Probe for my step-daughter just 4 months ago and I wished I had read this forum first. Her car died yesterday and I'm hearing from several people that it's probably the alternator. There was a brand new battery in the engine (it still had the pricetag on it). I'm wondering if the dealer replaced the battery before even checking to see if the problem was the alternator. I'm hesitant to call the dealer back because it's been 4 months and we didn't get any warranty on it because we were advised not to by the dealer.
It wouldn't start or turnover for her at first, then after sitting for awhile, it would turn over, but not start. So we jumped it and let it idle for about 5 minutes and the engine just turned off. The battery gauge is reading as low as it can possibly go, but her interior lights and radio work. Any ideas?

Which is most likely your alternator. Could be another component, but you need some type of test kit to find out - or take it to your local repair shop and have them do it.

We have had our 95 probe gt 5 speed since it was new. It had several defects when new, including repainting the hood and some radiator hose leaks (lots of other minor stuff). After several visits to the dealer all was well.

The car has been really reliable the last few years. It has about 48,000 miles and the engine is burning a little oil - some smoke at start-up and when you run the engine up to redline. Only adding one quart between oil changes (so a quart every 1,500 miles).

The car is a blast to drive, although I wish it had a bit more torque. I will have to sell it soon to get a family car - probably a Subaru wagon. I really like the utility of the hatchback so a wagon is a logical replacement for a growing family.

I really hate all our local Ford dealers. After owning 2 new Fords (93 Escort and 95 Probe) I will probably never buy another new car from them. They are just too hard to work with and very sloppy about the quality of service provided.

Yes the ATX on the Probe is a trouble area. A lot of people that have them are putting synthetic ATX fluid in them and putting a heavy duty transmission oil cooler on. There is an oil cooler on them already but it is in the radiator, and doesn't cool very well. After you get it repaired keep up the maintenance on it, replace the fluid and filter about every 30K.

For more info go to www.probetalk.com and do a search for atx problems, or something similar.

Can anyone tell me how to determine the market value of the car. I tried Keely's Blue book, but are there any other sources? The insurance company determined that the car waa a total loss and they are paying me very minimal amount of money for the value of the car. My car is 94 probe GT with 55990 miles and in excellent condition. No detn or ding anywhere. all stock. any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a silver 93' Probe with 91,000 on it. It is in good condition. It had a new rebuilt transmission put in 2 years ago. Other than that it has minor dings, but looks good!! No rust, or chipped paint. Does anyone know the best place to sell this online?

I found a '95 Probe with 39,500 miles on it. It's in great condition. It has a V-4 engine on it. The deal seems great but I'm just not sure how the engine would handle in the years to come. I would really appreciate any advice anyone can offer on whether I should go ahead with the deal. The owner is asking for $6,000.
    Thanks.

I bought a new battery for my truck and i installed it, but the truck wouldn't start. I had replaced the old battery because it was leaking and getting old but had no other problems and the truck still ran. I installed the new battery and the truck wouldn't start. The alternater was working and everything else was in working order. It turned out that the new battery was dead, it just needed charging. So just try and charge the battery and see if it runs then. Instead of replacing the alternator.

I miss my 93 GT dearly. I had many of the problems described in this forum, but the sheer pleasure of driving that car far outweighs the bad experiences. (Okay, maybe paying $120 for plug wires to replace the factory set that was shorting to the manifold at less than 50K still sticks in my craw.)
I bought the car new in October of 1992. It was my first new car. It was my girlfriend for many years until I got stupid, er, married. Weekends were planned around the wash, wax and 130 mph blow-dry, followed by screaming through twisting hairpins at 4x the recommended speed. (Legal note: Those yellow signs are not the limit, only a safe recommended speed!!)
Off the line, it was respectable, but not fast. At highway speeds, it would humble a Mustang GT. Passing zones were a rush. Dropping the shifter and watching the speedo spin to 100 mph in a few seconds was just unreal. (Sadly, I always had to apply the brakes immediately after the pass, since I had a clean driving record to maintain.)

Oh, how I miss the driving....

If you want basic transportation, don't buy this car. You will be a waste behind the wheel and the frequent problems will only tick you off.

We just bought a 95 Probe for our teenage son to drive. It has 105,000 miles on it. He drove it for less than 500 miles before the transmission went out. Anyone know where we can find a rebuilt transmission? (Would have considered one from a wrecked car, until I read about all the ones with under 50K that had their transmissions go out....).
    THANKS!

In Feb 2000, I bought a 95 Ford Probe for $5500 with 68,000 miles on it through a dealer in NJ. Well...I soon found out why it was so cheap! It certainly looked brand new and beautiful from the outside (sporty red w/sunroof). 1 wk before the 1 mth warranty on the car expired we had to have a rebuilt trainy put in and rcvd a 1 year warranty on that...but since then - we've brought it in an average of once every 2 months because the overdrive light keeps coming on indicating transmission problems. Is there a way of claiming lemon law on a used car through the dealership??? The warranty on the trainy is almost up and I think that the dealer is just "temporarily" fixing it until the warranty expires. Any thoughts? I really don't have the money for a new car!

I have a 1995 probe se, in super shape. one thing that concerns me is when i am in drive and stopped like at a light or something, the idle gets really rough, it doesn't die but it just gets lower or something. also when turning on the lights or rolling up the windows or even using the heater, the idle goes down. could it be a problem with the battery or alternator. everything else on this car is imaculate though. please help....my email address-surfrider30@hotmail.com

I've experienced similar problems with my 95 probe se. It was idling roughly especially with the A/C. The problem gradually got worse (started stalling at low speed..scary). Turns out the problem is caused by a faulty idle air control valve (part controls air flow to the engine). The part is exorbitantly expensive so I got a used part from a junk yard (they took it from a 97' Mazda 626 - the probe, 626 and Mx-6 all share the same engine). Might not be the same problem, since I never had problems with the power windows.
Also in reply to the automatic transmission problems. Before I purchased mine (1.5 years ago), I did a lot of reliability research on the cars I was considering. The only significant problem with the Probe was the auto tranny otherwise it was great (engine is all Mazda, the cheap interior all ford). So I went with the 5-speed, which incidentally is much more fun anyway.

It has 59K miles on it. I am having it rebuilt at AANCO and now that I've read this as soon as it's fixed, I'm trading it in.
