As long as it is with in the original warranty you can buy an Acura extended warranty. You can buy it from any Acura dealer in the US or Canada. You aren't limited to buying it from the selling dealer. See here.

That one you checked out doesn't sound at all at the level of a CPO. You were wise to pass it up.

Was reading and came across the concept of leasing a used vehicle. Anyone know more about it? What residuals and money factors are used for pre-owned cars? How are they determined? Is leasing used worth it?
  • jwilliams2jwilliams2 Member Posts: 910
    edited November 2011
Leasing a used car is generally a bad idea. The residuals are so low, and money factors so high, that it just doesn't make sense. Much better to finance a used car if you don't have the cash to purchase outright. Especially if the brand has special rates on pre-owned models.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 10,265
    "...easing a used vehicle."

Don't do it. It's pretty uncommon and I've never seen terms on a used vehicle that were favorable. If you can find a factory-supported deal on a service loaner or something, where they lease it like it's a brand new car, that's different.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
I'm going to be blunt....you'll either thank me or hate me. Don't buy something you can't afford. There are so many nice reliable vehicles out there you can afford without compromising just to get a luxury brand. You really won't impress anyone and you can generally get many of the features on lower-end vehicles. Everyone has to make decisions based on what they can afford. I'm a financial advisor, cpa, cfp, and have put on seminars for debt management and budgeting. My base-line for purchasing a vehicle on credit is to have 20% down and not finance longer than would make the vehicle exceed 100k miles based on your driving needs. This protects you from depreciation if you need to sell/trade the vehicle and also driving a high mileage vehicle with payments which could become a problem when repairs pop up.

I've been thinking the same exact thing after reading theeegod's posts.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Can you? Yes.

    Would you want to? No.

I used to be (Late 90s) huge into used car leasing, but the programs are terrible these days.

I probably wouldn't try it used, but like with the Z4 lease KY just picked up (briefly) ir seems to make a ton of sense on something like a service loaner, or current MY turn in of come kind.

say on a BMW. 4/50 warranty. Instead of doing a 3 year lease on a new unit, do it on a 1 YO demo, and essentially get the last 3 years of a 4 year lease.

depends on the MF of course, but if you are getting a comparable rate, it should be cheaper since the delta between cap cost and residual should be smaller, and of course, it will be cheaper in the first place.

Sealed the deal! Thanks for the responses. Picked up a 2010 MDX Base with 25K miles + 8yr/100K mile extended warranty for around $35 out the door with everything included. Love the metallic color and the black interior. Car is superb and the deal went smooth. Financed for 72 months and put $3k down. Excited!

Curious now as to how to fill up the tank...was researching around and some say to get the premium gas while others say to just go with the regular gas.

Say, how long is that paper registration good for? Any real registration yet? And no word on the extended warranty I foolishly signed for. I'll gladly have him tear it up and say "never mind."

The car is great. Have the top down today which I love but is pretty ridiculous considering that come Thursday it's December!

Now Fezo, I could use your convert today down here in the Lauderdale area as the weather is absolutely beautiful...perfect day for a drop top! I've always liked the Solara one's, a good friend had a white over tan leather one back in '07 and it was a beaut...had that pearlized paint I think. There are so many days that we can use a drop top here but when we had our '70 Caddy, remember the lining of the inside of the top was pretty shabby actually...are they finished off better these days? Thought about a new Sebring back in '06 since we both loved the rental we had for about a week...we'd go out every night and just drive around town loving it. But for some reason I nixed the idea because of it's size and the fact that it didn't fit on my side of the garage. A few times now we've actually brought a new car home to see if it would fit on either side of the garage...the salesguys never had a problem with it either.

recommended and required are two different things.

HOWEVER, I just looked on the Acura site and it does say 91 octane is "required." So I suppose if you are worried about warranty issues, you may want to do what they say.

We all know regular fuel would never damage a modern engine ... but I probably wouldn't risk my warranty over it.

Mazda recommends premium for the Miata, but only regular is required, so I use that.

I hate that at wholesale premium only costs $0.03 to $0.04 more per gallon yet they charge 10 times that.
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,384
The Solara recommends regular but then says performance will be better with premium. I've tried both and don't notice a difference.

Yeah, a modern convertible is definitely more nicely finished than back in the day. This one is really nice inside. With the top up you hardly notice it's a convertible until you look to the back and find the blind spots.

My run of top down days has ended. It's cooler and raining. Hoping for better by the end of the week.

It's gonna depend where ya trade it...

You're in SoCal so the 2WD isn't a killer there like it would be up here... Here in Jersey? $28-29k with the damage.. Out near LA? I could see $33-34k... solid $32k.

    I'd rather have this.

Even with the auto, I'd take that in a heartbeat. Although I'll admit the coupe is prettier. But that turbo trumps all, IMHO.

The '07 335i sedan I posted above (dark grey over black, sport, cold weather, premium, auto, 47k miles)

an '07 GTI 6-speed 4-door, black, moonroof, clean with deep rubber, etc, and 68k miles.

an '00 540i 6-speed, dark blue over black, with everything but Nav and ... 148k miles (but looks and runs like a clean 50k car).

I'm still kind of ambivalent about the turbo; I keep hearing stories of the car going into limp-home mode on the track- even with an oil cooler. And since I tend to keep my Bimmers way past 100K the lack of another layer of(expensive) complexity is rather compelling.
But I admit that I would be sorely tempted by the red 1er if it was located a little closer to home...

Sorry for delay.. been closing out the month...

540? $3-3500. Megamile 12 year old V8 BMW? How about I just come over to your house and kick your wallet in the teeth?

GTI? $10k or so, assuming cloth, no roof, no little color moving map in the dash.

335i? Stock up on fuel pumps. Probably low - mid 18s.

Of course, depends on the car.. we have a 335i, danged shop banged us out for $1300 on it.

GTI has a roof. I'm thinking $11k on it. ;b

I've decided to hold onto the BMW. Those E39s are darned sturdy, so the miles don't scare me one bit. Especially this one that is as clean as they get.

What's the story on your 335? Was $1300 just for the fuel pump? Did they bother to tell you that BMW is covering the fuel pump for 120k miles now?

I'm really really leaning towards a 135, but the right deal and right color combo could persuade me. ;)

That 2007 White BMW 3-series coupe should trade at the auction well into the $16s, if not maybe slightly more, so I highly doubt the dealer will retail it for that. That being said, the asking price is at the high end of the spectrum. Depending on how the car is, $20k would be a very fair purchase price. It really all depends on the car.

Galves is $13900 but MMR is $17k on a car like this..

$23k is stupid tho, no more than $20k... Maybe $21k if they did like tires and brakes or something.
