I see you are new on Edmunds. If you click on kathy5 in her post you will see a profile that she has not posted or logged on here since July 19, 2005, so I doubt if she will ever read your response. It usually doesn't pay to respond to posts that old as either the issue has been solved, or the original poster lost interest long ago.

Welcome to the dwindling group of Taurus/Sable posters, however!

Hello everybody. I have a 2000 Ford Taurus SES. I was thinking of adding a few things to it. Because I wanted to add a little bit horsepower to it. Does anybody any ideas going on doing that? I would really appreciate that. Thanx. :confuse:

    need help
on my 91 sable with abs the brake pedal comes up a little harder then normal when coming to a stop at low speed only the last 25 feet. it just started doing it.

I noticed your high recommendation on the Brembo rotors. I've got 164K on my 2000 Sable and have had to have the factory rotors turned 3 times during that time due to warping (50K, 90K, and 122K). My mechanic told me at 122K, that was the last time he could turn them. Just had the front brakes done today at 164K, and had the Brembo rotors installed. What can I expect in performance? Better braking? Better resistance to warping? All of the above and more? I know one thing, the drive back to work from the mechanic's shop was wonderful! What a smooth stop! Thanks.

high im new to this site yea i read your message you might want to go with first, high flow air filter ,fuel sytem cleaner get the redline brand from pep boys im an employee there so you can ask any thing about your car and i can tell you what you want to know also get high conducting spark plug wires and performance spark plugs how much are you wanting to spend on it and how much more horsepower are you looking to gain :shades:
  • beancounterbeancounter Member Posts: 31
I tried a K&M air filter, but it kept screwing up my Mass Airflow Sensor. Went back to a good paper filter. Since then, no Check Engine lites. The biggest boost in performance came when I switched to 93 octane for my Vulcan V6. May take a look at better wires and plugs when the time comes. My mechanic called his supplier and asked about perf parts. His response was "That's the first time I've ever been asked about such things for a Sable!" What about exhaust systems? Any recommendations? Don't want anything loud, but wouldn't mind changing the tone a little and boosting the HP if possible.
  • racer5racer5 Member Posts: 3
really because im putting a intake on my 95 taurus i guess ill see wat happens for exhaust you might wanna go with flowmaster or the cherrybomb turbo or turbo 2
  • beancounterbeancounter Member Posts: 31
Thanks for the tips. I'm still on the original exhaust at 165K miles. Don't know if I'll change it before it actually goes. Depends on my wallet I guess! I also have a 1994 Probe GT w/ only 24K miles on it (driven on dry summer weekends only). I've always loved the sound of that V6. Wonder if the Flowmaster or Cherrybomb would give me something similar in sound.

I recently bought a 2005 Mercury Sable and got a nasty rock chip on the center section of the back bumper of the car. I generally put mud protectors on my cars shortly after purchasing. It seemed like a strange place for a rock chip and was wondering if this car is any more prone to this kind of damage or if I just had a moment of bad luck? As other owners may know this model has what appears to be rubber side panels along the side of the car and what appear to be mud protectors in the front wheel wells.
  • badgerfanbadgerfan Member Posts: 1,565
I doubt if you really got a rock chip on the center part of the rear bumper. Highly unlikely that any trajectory of a stone thrown up by either your car or someone else's car would hit there. I suggest you probably got a ding from someones front license plate bolts during a parallel parking incident.

If the Sable is like my Taurus, and I believe it is in this area, the front "mud guard" is an extension of the black plastic rocker panel cover that covers up the steel reinforcing "bar" under both front an rear doors. It seems to do an adequate job as a small mud guard.

Behind the rear wheel wells the plastic bumper cover extends all the way to the back of the wheel wells, and I mounted simple aftermarket mud guards in that location, mostly to keep the area behind clean.

A friend was involved in an accident they were in a 2003 taurus. it was hit from behind and pushed into another vehicle, with enough impact that the right side air bag deployed but ruptured. The drivers side air bag did not deploy at all. Any info about this would be helpful as to I have other friends that own taurus,s
  • bremertongbremertong Member Posts: 436
I agree that logic suggests that it is highly unlikely that I got the ding from a rock but during that period I did not parallel park anywhere. I generally park in isolated areas of parking lots to avoid that kind of damage. As you know it costs a lot to repair, the dealer ship touched it up and refused any compensation. Will probably do as you suggest and get after market mud guards. The color being silver metallic the ding still shows. I only bought the car three weeks ago so it was a small disappointment to get a ding that quickly. Thank you for the information
  • racer5racer5 Member Posts: 3
yea you can buy a cherry bomb turbo exhaust or a cherrybomb glass pak for about 20 dollars each at pep boys i love my v6 especially since i just got the new motor and just tuned the ecu by adjusting the injectors so now it whistles it sounds like its supercharged but its not its fast as ever though on 87 octane

    Hi,
All aspects of braking performance will be immediately and greatly improved by installing Brembo brake rotors. And the Taurus needs improvement in the braking department. I consider my Taurus to be a Ford "Volvo" now that it has the superior braking performance of the Brembo brake rotors along with great crash test scores and large, comfortable seats. Bought Brembo rotors at autobarn dot com.
  • badgerfanbadgerfan Member Posts: 1,565
What is your question? Why the driver's side did not deploy?

This generation Ford Taurus has a sophisticated system for sensing and deploying the air bags and I list from the advertising blurb:

    Dual Stage front Airbags
    Front Crash Severity Sensors
    Driver's Seat Position Sensor
    Safety Belt Useage Sensors
    Front Safety Belt Pretensioners
Front Safety Belt Energy Management Retractors.

Altogether, it may mean that the system sensed that the passenger side required deployment and the drivers side did not.

As far as "rupturing" goes, airbags are not like a balloon. Once deployed and inflated at explosive speed, they are designed to rapidly deflate, so may look ruptured but worked just as designed.
  • beancounterbeancounter Member Posts: 31
Adjust the injectors by tuning the ECU? Tell me more. Was that done w/ the purchase of a special chip, or something else?

Re the exhaust: Just insert a Cherry Bomb in place of the factory muffler and keep the rest of the system stock?

    Thanks

In the short time I have owned this car (about a month) I have been pleasantly surprised by the power it has a (V-6 Duratec. I was expecting something good but the power is almost sizzling! I bought the car with 1700 miles on it and at about half the new price. The only problem;em so far has been that the alarm system doesn't work, is due at the dealership for repair next week. The features are very good including leather seats, wood and leather steering wheel, CD changer, fog lights, and auto head lights. I bought the car partly on the basis of the owners ratings (9.2) at Edmunds.
versus the 5.5 that Edmunds gave the car. I am waiting to
to post my own evaluation until I have owned it for about three months.

My '90 Taurus keeps blowing the fuse for the turn signal and the mechanic can't find the short. Here is some info:

    the fuse blows only when the brakes and turn signal are on together;
    the owner's manual says the brake lights and signal are on the same fuse but they don't seem to be because the brake lights work fine (the manual says it's fuse 1 but fuse 5 is the one that shorts);
the mechanic checked the bulbs and spent a couple of hours looking for the short in the steering column, with no luck.

Any ideas before I take it to the really expensive electric system specialist?
  • observer22observer22 Member Posts: 41
...and it looks good. Since the Monte Carlo is a very slow seller (not enough support to have its own Edmunds forum) you may not get to see it. Monte suffers from the horrible 3.4 engine in its base model (costs about $5000 more to get the better 3.8 in the SS). Also avoid the Chrysler/Dodge 2.7 engine.

Anyone know how to replace a rear light bulb in a 1995 Mercury Sable? The owners manual gives no information. I've removed the trunk interior trim but can't see how to do it. I can't believe Ford made it so difficult to do this!!!
  • jaxs1jaxs1 Member Posts: 2,697
What are quietest tires you can buy that come in the standard size for a Taurus SES?
  • gyatesgyates Member Posts: 55
Bridgestone Turanza LS-T. Great tire. I have 40k on a set now, and am very happy with this tire.
  • scape2scape2 Member Posts: 4,123
I know many friends and family that have had these cars. Mostly with the 3.0 Vulcan and the 3.0 Duratec engines in them. As most like to trounce these vehicles as being unreliable.. in reality they are not. If you dig around the net you will see they are actually very good cars. My mother and father-inw swear by them. They have owned 2 over the years and have run all up to about 130,000 miles with no issues other than regular maintenance. they own an 03 SES now with about 50,000 miles and love it...no problems..
  • badgerfanbadgerfan Member Posts: 1,565
It is actually pretty easy. Once you have pulled back the interior trunk liner behind the tail light, you will see some big plastic wing nuts that hold the tailight assembly studs to the car. Remove all these, then the tailight assembly can be pulled loose from the car. Then you can twist, if I recall it is about a 1/4 turn, on the entire light socket that the wires go into. This exposes the inside of the socket, and you can remove the bulb easily. To reassemble, just reverse all these steps.

I have an '05 company Taurus. It has 51,000 miles on it. It was new when it was issued to me 18 months ago. No probelms at all thus far!
  • bremertongbremertong Member Posts: 436
I very much appreciated reading your posts. I recently bought a Mercury Sable 2005 LS with 1700 miles on it for just under $ 14,000. I have liked the car very much since my purchase, it is a second and companion car to my 2004 Cadillac Deville. Dollar for dollar the Mercury is in my opinion the better value. I like my Deville and will probably update in the next year or two but I am pleasantly surprised at the features and performance of the Mercury. Cadillac has a tendency to nickel and dime you on features. As examples wood and leather steering wheel, chrome wheels, keyless entry key pad on door, mach sound system, universal home link and cd changer all included in the less than $ 14,000 price on my Mercury but not in my Cadillac at more than twice the price. When I made the decision to purchase
the Mercury it was on the basis of Edmunds owners reviews at Edmunds which rated the car 9.2. Thanks owners, I put much more importance on what an owner says than some of the rating agencies. If the Ford Motor can continue to offer this kind of value in its cars it may well have a bright future. To be fair about it the one feature I do miss in the Mercury is the onstar system which is a wonderful safety feature in many of the GM cars and in all
    the Cadillac models.

I cannot find the pre-wiring location for a CD changer. I looked underneath the carpeting in the trunk and on the driver side in the trunk, but cannot find cd changer plug. please help. Thanks!!

Look at where the antenna is. Open eveything up until you can see where the antenna goes into the car and the rest of the radio equipment is there.

ITS TO HOT NOT HAVING MY A/C NOT WORKING. I CHECKED THE FUSES, DON'T KNOW HOW TO CHECK THE RELAYS SO NOW I WILL TRY CHECKING THE BLOWER MOTOR BUT I DON'T KNOW WHERE ITS LOCATED.
  • edgriebeledgriebel Member Posts: 3
Bonehead move last nite, I left the pax window 1/2 open and it rained a fair bit overnite. Aside from sopping up the standing water, is there anything else I could do, like popping a chassis drain plug? Also, anything to look out for down the road? Thanks!
  • ford_boy_1984ford_boy_1984 Member Posts: 5
    here simple little step

start the car than turn on your A/C to max. look at your pully to the compressor. the pully should turn than you have your compressor that should also be turning. if it is than you need a charge.

If the compressor is not turning than you nees to go a voltage meter (wallmart $9), w/ the car on but the compressor off find the connection to the compressor. once you locate the remote wire than turn on the compressor and check if you are getting a reading than you know its the compressor, if no reading or a weak reading than check your connections, GROUND, and relays

bear with me, this is part of another entry i placed today for someone else, but i thought it might help you....

crutchfield is very good when it comes to finding the right sterio for your car, but if your taurus is like my 99 taurus, it has the round faceplate in the center of the dash.... there's no cd player or tape deck that can fit, unless you order the faceplate and tape deck from ford directly... (I battled this one for two years.....) you can't get a cd player put in your car, at least not in the cabin. The 99 taurus's have a built in adapter and brackets for the 5 or 6 disk changer in the trunk, right below the back window. it's basicly, plug and play. if your faceplate in the dash has the 'disc' buttons, then once you install it (a few screws and one big plug) you're good to go. if your faceplate doesn't have those buttons, you can order a new faceplate and tape deck from ford, and have your local body shop or mechanic install it for you. there's a special tool they will need to take the plate off, don't try it yourself or you'll break it without it. Oh, and don't waste your money on a 300 or 400 dollar changer, they're all the same unless you have new speakers put in.

Since the SES model no longer exists, how does a 2002 SES compare to a 2006 SE?
I noticed the newer Tauruses lost the puddle lamps, glove box light, dark tint band at the top of the windshield, and changed to black plastic interior door handles. What else?
Is there any other decontenting that is not visible? For instance did they reduce sound insulation, bumper quality, seat cushion quality or make any other hidden changes?
    Did they actually improve anything?
If you upgrade from SE to LX on the 2006, do you get any of those lost features back?

    I have a 1997 Taurus. SURPRISE! The tranny's shot...
So I bid on one on e-bay and won a rebuilt one for 100.00! Whoopie! As I begin to remove the old one it seems to me that it may be easiest to remove the motor with the tranny. Can anyone confirm this? I was going to try removing just the transmission but I on't think I could drop it without removing the subframe.
  • salsbugiesalsbugie Member Posts: 4
It is a 3.0 with a 110,00o miles on it. It is using about 1 qt about every 500 miles or so. It is not leaking at all.
  • crfceocrfceo Member Posts: 2
I'll bet it IS leaking. My experience is this. I went on a small road trip in my 1997 taurus. I pulled off the highway to get gas an d realized my transmission wasn't working. I got out and it was leaking badly. I managed to get it home stopping every few miles to refill it. The next morning, I jacked up the car, put it on stands and started it to find the source of the leak. There wasn't any! I let it run, I revved it, and NOTHING leaked. This was about 1 year ago. Today, I pulled my motor to replace the transmission, which is completely shot. I managed 1 extra year using transmission additives and sealers. If you search this site, you'll discover much as I did that this is a common problem with , dare I say ALL ford Taurus'. The transmissions are crap.
  • salsbugiesalsbugie Member Posts: 4
it is not leaking from what i can see. I park in a concret drive way and there is never any spots there, ever. Can it be burning it like the older cars did thru the modulator
  • savethelandsavetheland Member Posts: 671
It leaks when transmission fluid gets hot. Before that it does not leak. But when it gets hot - it leaks like hell. I had this problem in my '94 Taurus. I bought it with more than 100K and it was commersially used (or misused) but cheap. I discovered AT to leak badly at parking lot 40 miles away from home, I drove it stopping once in a while to add fluid but made it to home and even commuted several monthes before fixing AT. The reason was malfunction of converter clutch - it screwed computer and that caused harsh shifts. Even replacing converter did not solve problem with clutch malfunction. May be problem was computer or something else. I still managed to commute three years when leaking became bad enough to give up and at this point I was able to buy a brand new car.

I am going to sell or give away my aging fathers 1990 Mercury Sable. The air bag light is blinking, ten times. I think that means a faulty firing circuit disarm device. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

    Thanks John

I have a 1989 Mercury Sable 3.8L that is running very rich. the code reader is giving codes 41 and 91 indicating o2 sensors are always reading "lean", so the computer is trying to compensate and add more gas. I replaces the sensors with the same result. any thought of what it might be

I have a 2002 Taurus. When it is cold outside the dash lights do not come on, only the turn indicators, when you turn on the head lights. At fisrt, last year, it took a couple of minutes for the lights to come on, now it takes up to 45 minutes. Does anyone know what might be the problem? It is unnerving to be driving at night without dash lights. Help please! :-)
  • adam12adam12 Member Posts: 1
I had a similar problem with a 1994 Grand Marquis. This car was equipped with autolamps. The funny thing was, when you turn the headlights on manually, ONLY the headlights came on; no parking lights, no side markers, no instrument panel illumination; but when the automatic lamps came on, all lights came on normally. A trip to the dealer revealed the light switch on the dashboard was bad and needed to be replaced at a cost of $300.

can anyone tell me where the horn relay is situated on the 99 ford taurus? thanks fer da help
  • nhagannhagan Member Posts: 1
I experience the same thing in my 2003 Taurus. Began in fall of 2006 - sometimes dashboard lights, sometimes not. I get the green lights (turn indicators) too. This week, I'm experiencing lights, then green lights, then no lights and lights again.... It's crazy!! I'm looking around the net for more info -as I think this could become a costly repair especially electrical!!!

Ford will soon announce the return of the Taurus.
Not a new vehicle, but the Five Hundred named will be scrapped and the vehicle will be rebadged as a Taurus.
  • savethelandsavetheland Member Posts: 671
We discuss it in 500/Montego forum. May be it makes sense to close this forum and rename 500/Montego forum to 500/Montego/Taurus/Sable.
