    OK, I got '99 4cyl ES with 40k miles. I think it's time for a tune-up :)
    1. Has anyone changed their AT filter and fluid? Is it easy or dealer-only thing? 2. Is there a gasket that should be changed as well? I will replace PVC valve as well as sparkplugs. 3. Should I get OEM sparks or aftermarket ones? And should I replace cables too? 4. Anything else should be done at this point as well, like coolant change? 5. How much is for the manual? Automag.com wants $109, but I think someone here said you can get it aftermarket for 1/2 the price. I called automag.com and ordered an AT kit, but it turned out that they don't have it and will not. That guy was an a@#hole - I will never call them again!

A lot of questions, but this is the right place to ask them, huh? :)

Take it in for a tune up! $300 and a day without the car is all you have to worry about! You definitely need a tune up at 40k.
By the way.... I own a 94 LS, and this is my second Galant. My 90 had 129k miles when I traded it in. Had to rebuild the tranny at 98k miles, but cried when I traded it, still. I get grief from family and friends about owning a Mits. Galant, but I really do love my car. It is beautiful, handles very well, is tight (steering, front end, corners, etc) and I get 27 mpg highway. Preventive maintenance is key with ANY used car! I take good care of my car, and she takes good care of me.

    Hi folks,

Now that we have moved to our new platform, we no longer have the requirement to stop and restart discussions after the numbers of posts exceed a certain limit. To keep from confusing our newer members down the road, we are going through the discussion list bit by bit and dropping the "part" numbers associated with some of our extended discussions.

Since this will be the permanent home for discussion of the Galant, I have removed the "2" from the title of this discussion and altered the name of the archived version to distinguish it from this one.

    Please continue....

    Mine is a '99 GT with 22,000 i., I Changed:
    1. Tarns filter and oil, Can't find filter at shops, bought it at Mitsubishi, Oil From Mitsubishi since it's Required in the manual. Since Mitsu. also owns and operate oil company, quality should be OK. 2. Mine's 6,don't know, but you should do so as recommends, however,
you don't really need to replace PVC and Plugs until 60,000Mi., and cables at much higher Mi.(like 90,000 Tune-up),3. You don't need OE Plugs,Other manufactures has better ones to offer, just don't get Split Fire, all it does is rising unnecessary engine Temp., 4. If you really wants to know, Coolant/steering fluid/brake fluid should
be flush yearly to clean away deposits and replacewith new ones, or at least once every 2 years as many cars manual recommends so. The only thing you forgotten at this point is the air filter, because
of the intake design, you might wash to change the air filter sooner than recommended, which also helps fuel economy big time.
  • marcin97marcin97 Member Posts: 7
Air Filter I did replace at 24k, last summer. Last weekend I replaced AT fluid, filter, plugs, and cables - all Mitsu parts. AT fluid is the most expensive fluid you can find on the market - $4.25/qt. According to Mitsu, you can't use anything else but Mitsu AT Fluid. But I got a great deal on the service from the local service at Oil-n-Go. Their regular price for AT service (complete replacement - like bypass surgery) is $79. Because they could not use their own oil, I got a credit of $4.25/qt after showing the Mitsu receipt. So the labor on the service was around $30. Plus $20 labor for plugs and wires. I think I got a great deal on all of this. I did not change the PVC valve. I only regret changing wires, it did cost me over $30 for just 2 cables, yes only 2 cables ca n be changed. The other 2 are connected to coils - very expensive to change.
The only thing that needs to be changed is fuel filter. At 40k I think I should. But the local service place could not locate the filter so I have to talk to the dealer. Actually I will tomorrow because my oil pressure light flickers when idling, especially after 20 min of driving when coming to the stop light. It goes off when shifted to neutral but then after a while it turns on again. I just hope it is a sensor and that it is covered under 60k warranty. My bumper to bumper is over.

I am not sure about that timing belt. The 2.0L engine in the 1989-1992 Galants and many Eclipses (the same engine as in my 1988 Colt Vista) is a non-interference engine. The 3.0L V-6 engine in the Chrysler minivans and cars is also a non-interference engine. But the 2.4L engine, I do not know about.

    Hello,

I'd like to know if anyone out there can quote what would sort of price should be expected
for repair and/or replacement of the Engine(4cyl) and Transmission(Auto) that go in
a 1985 Mitsubishi Galant. I don't know what sort of prices to expect, but would like to know
what kind of price range can be gotten and what sort of locations they are from.

For reference, I'm located in the Pacific Northwest and am looking to spend $2000.00 for
    the repair of this vehicle.

Here's some other info about my car and my automobile situation:
    - currently have about 105,000 miles.
    - the tranny is dead (engine starts/runs fine, but car can't move an inch).
    - i heard a metallic 'clunk' noise when tranny died.
    - this Mitsu has had the auto.tranny replaced by the prev.owner
    - suspect that one of the engine cyls has lowered compression
    - this car has stranded me on the road twice! - once because of
a failed fuel pump and this time when the tranny died.

Can anyone out there provide what type of price I can expect
    to fix this car ??!?
In the meantime I have three other cars to drive....whew!

    tia,

Thanks, Occupant, for your reply! I actually had all of the belts and the tentioner replaced last weekend, as well as the water pump. Could have went to Cancun for the money I spent! Now when I start the car, it rev's up loudly....like it is idoling higher than normal. Makes my sunroof rattle it's so loud. Will have it re-checked. Mechanic says that is normal??
Another note- took my Galant in for the recall of the ball joint, suspension arms, and guess what?? Mits. does NOT align the car afterwards!!! Is that crazy, or what? Now my tires are wearing....and my alignment was fine before I went in.....now the car pulls hard to the left! Go figure! Any suggestions, same experiences? (on my laundry list) anyone?

Pretty good report about their experiences with the 99 Galant GTZ. Just click the link below:

  • drobinson19drobinson19 Member Posts: 11
Galants come equipped with a filter that takes out pollen and dust like the honda accord and other cars in its class. I don't know how hard it is to change it, but you are suppose to change it out every 15K or so.

Thanks drobinson19 for the info, but now I would like to know if anyone out there had actually changed the AC pollen filter, I need to know if it can be done easily or is it a dealers job only?

    I purchased a 1999 galant GTZ on 8-99 from
Tempe Mitsubishi in AZ. I am overall pleased
with the car. I had noticed a slight shake in
the front end when applying the brakes at higher
speeds(70+ mph.) I took it in to have it inspected
within an hour I was called and told there is a
service bulletin on this problem. They replaced
the lower control arms, bushings, ball joints,
resurfaced the brake rotors, installed new brake
pads, and did a front end alignment. This was all
under warranty, ( the car has 17,000 miles). Hey,
they even paided for the rental car which I had
for 3 days. The car drives perfectly now. I
wonder if anyone else has this problem I was told
it applys to all Galant models. The bottom line
is be aware of your car and ask questions. Tempe
Mitsubishi gave me excellent service in buying
and more important to me, the same excellent care
when I had a problem and needed service.
  • tallgaltallgal Member Posts: 14
I have that exact car! It has 62k miles on it. It is only worth $4200 RETAIL. I have a Pioneer CD system, sunroof, Anti-lock breaks, tinted windows, alloy wheels, etc.... and it is in MINT shape! $4200 is all she is worth. I have no idea what you were going to spend, but w/ 90k miles... I would say $3500 TOPS! Make sure the recall work has been done on it too! You will undoubtly need to put some $$$ in to it after purchasing!! Tune-up, tranny service, belts....

I have 99 ES 4cyl. I bought it on 6-99 and currently have 40.5K mi. Problem with brakes I encountered in just few days after buying the car. Actually the only serious complaint I have is on very weak brakes. I complained several times but all I got out of it was free rotor turning at 24k mi. Jazz12, you've mentioned that there was a service bulletin and all of this was done free of charge. That's great b/c I know there is a problem. Do you have any other info on this announcement? If not could you provide me with your dealership tel number. I want my brakes fixed before it's too late. thanks, m
  • vac23vac23 Member Posts: 118
I have the same car as you & problem as well. I thought they were just the rotors being warp but since they have a bulletin on it I might use that to get my problem fix. If you can provide any info on that bulletin I'd appresciate it!
  • jazz12jazz12 Member Posts: 6
The problem I had with the vibration felt through
the steering wheel when applying the brakes at
highway speed was there from day 1 of purchasing
the car. I was told when I took it in that this
was being addressed on a case by case bases. I
was also told that there is a "service bulletin"
outlining all the necessary repairs. The dealer
is Tempe Mitsubishi in Tempe Az. 480-940-3400
My service consultant was Chris Bates, direct
phone number 480-763-4024. I was also told that
it is not a recall, but a "service bulletin".

My Mom's sister drives a 1995 Galant ES,it now has 68,893 miles, and it runs great, but they just had to put a new water pump and timing belt, which to me is not normal for such a new car,the only thing i noticed was that it doesn't acclerate very quick and the engine is quite noisy when first going, but it is recieving nearly 27.3 miles per gallon highway, but since they had just purchased an Accord, the Galant only is used about 1500 miles per month locally, the body is in ok condition, some dents and normal tear and wear, but the paint is dark gray and looks like new.Just wanted to post this to let others with a galant know how it's doing.
  • drobinson19drobinson19 Member Posts: 11
Replacing the timing belt on older cars without the new timing chain systems is common around 60-70k miles actually. Now they last to around 100K. My friend has a 94 Escort with 75k miles, his belt and water pump blew on the highway around 70k miles.
  • cajun626cajun626 Member Posts: 54
Hopefully this info will help another owner. I've read through this board and seen tons of complaints. I've performed routine maintenance on my '94 ES and at 95K miles it still runs great. My complaints: paint is faded badly in a few spots, had to replace ALL power windows, pwr antenna motor broke, dome light doesn't always work. I brought it in to a local chain last week to get the water pump changed (slow leak). When we got the car back my wife noticed that the car ran rough and vibrated. The shop manager told us it just needed a tune-up. After a week of fighting with the store and bringing the car back a few times, the mgr returned our money. We brought it to the dealer and found out that the first shop didn't know how to adjust the balance belt when they put the timing belt back on. The dealer's shop set the timing correctly and it runs fine again. If your car runs rough after having the timing belt changed make them fix it!

I love the way the galant looks but i am not so sure about buying one now that I have read some of the complaints! Shake and rattles and all.
I have a 95 nissan altima that i wanna get rid of since lately it has been spending too much time in the shop for costly repairs. I heard of the 1.9% apr with mitsubishi since i like the way it looks I was thinking of trading in my altima..
should i fix the dents and such b4 i trade in? I have heard that dealers will devalue a trade a lot if it has cosmetic damage... i owe a lot on it since i bought it used and got screwed by the dealer so i am trying to avoid them taking too much out of my trade.
  • marcin97marcin97 Member Posts: 7
try selling it on your own first. by trading in you will never get your full value of your car. but selling might be pain in the rear, you have to arrange time for people to show your car and let them test drive it. there are + and - no matter which way you go :)
  • cajun626cajun626 Member Posts: 54
The dealer wants over $100 to fix my broken power antenna motor. The antenna stays about midway up and the motor makes a nice grinding noise when the radio is first turned on/off. Can I get by cheaper by installing a whip antenna used on later models, or is there a way to disconnect the motor while leaving the antenna hooked up to the radio? I don't care about the antenna being stuck since the radio works, but I'd like to cut out the motor noise.

Go and see what a dealer offers you for your car the way it sits. The price of the Galant shouldn't be more than $500 over invoice. If you don't like the deal walk and you're back to the drawing board.

Most of the complaints I've seen here have been 99 models (which was first year of the redesign) or earlier models. I'm betting some of the kinks have been worked out. So far, our 01 has been flawless. I've had 4 camrys and run them pretty hard without a problem. Wife loved the Camrys, but the boring looks and passing one every block gets old so she wanted something nicer looking and less common. The Galant is better to drive IMHO than Camry/Accord, but the contols/function are nearly identical. I personally don't think the Galant will be as trouble-free as the Camrys, but I guess you gotta pay to play. They certainly aren't worse than most domestics, but the pricing is very close. We bought a V6 btw, I can't stand 4 bangers. I doubt the 4cyl Galant is as peppy as the Altima, but the V6 is super smooth and powerful.
  • 4u24u2 Member Posts: 17
My Galant now has more than 10,000 miles; and, I am still extremely happy with it. The V6 is smooth. The brakes are awesome. The styling is wonderful. The Infinity sound system is booming.

I think this car is an exceptional value, and I am glad that I chose to buy this car. Hey, ahngel, buy the Galant. It's great!!

I purchased part # mr468848 from the dealer for
my 99 Galant. No way will it fit. It would involve drilling 4 holes and fabrication of 2
brackets to MAYBE make it fit. What did I do wrong? Did I get the wrong bar? I was told it
    is standard on 2000 and 2001 Eclipse's. I can't
remember who, but a couple of people got the part
from a dealer in texas. Don Herring Mitsubishi.
They are the ones who told me it would fit my car.
Any advice would really help me out .

I'm in the market for my first car. Someone is selling a 94 Galant LS w/ 140K miles on it. I know, that's a lot. It will only cost me 2 grand.
I'm getting mixed reviews from people. One side - Too many miles.....Other side - It's your first car, just for practice...
    HELP!!!!
It has power everything, sunroof, ABS, dual airbags..Any advice is appreciated!!
  • vac23vac23 Member Posts: 118
It sounds like you are missing the brackets that goes with it. There should be a total of 3 parts-the bar itself & the brackets (left & right) They aren't sold together as a set. The only other thing you'll need to get from the auto parts store are the nuts (I forgot what size they were) but you'll need 2 on each side to hold down the bar to the brackets. The part # for the brackets are MR468851 & MR468852

Hi people, haven't been here for a long time, so for those interested here is an update of my 2k galant:

-I bought my 2k silver 4cyl galant Dec of 1999
-10,000 miles on it ( I know it's very little for a 1.5 yr car)
-getting 24 mpg on 89 octane
-Still accelerates like new and drives like new ( smells like new too LOL! )

-Did 2 oil changes so far , had the steering wheel recall taken care of 6 months ago, and will be doing the transmission recall next week.

Still nothing breaking apart and nothing to complain about.
The paint still looks sparkling , cloth looks new still ( btw, my back seats were used like 15 times only )

That's all for now, and hope my car will give me 2 or 3 more years of trouble free performance.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
While it sounds like a very nice car, you need to be prepared for expensive repairs. If/when something breaks you can easily exceed what you are paying for the car. I've always run my vehicles close to 200K miles without spending much on repairs, but you always need to be prepared for something expensive.

It comes down to this: If you only have $2,000 and don't have much cash to spend on repairs you should buy something cheaper to maintain/operate. All those power options are nice until they break. Anytime you buy a used car with high miles, you've got to be prepared to drop $1000 or more on repairs just in case.

I am having a huge problem deciding. My 1997 Acura Integra was stolen and stripped down to bare bones and I am now in the market for a replacement. Decided my "sporty" days are over and am in to "luxury". The Galant ES V6 has impressed me but the Accord also is tempting. Since I got such a great payoff on my Acura, I am acutely aware of resale value and the Galant seems to trail the Accord here. But maybe the price difference would make it a wash. Can anyone give me an idea of how they have fared with resale? Also, reliability has rated lower on the Galant than the Accord. I'm worried that the Galant might end up in the shop too much. I had not one day of problems with my Acura so I'm spoiled. Comments about either the Galant or the Accord would be greatly appreciated. I need to make a decision in the next 2 days.....aaarrgghhhhh!
  • blf2blf2 Member Posts: 38
the Galant LS if you can find one. We had an Accord a few years back & it was a great car, trouble free and held onto its' value well. We currently have a Galant GTZ, and it's been great. The reason I'd look for an LS, if it's still in your price range, is that you stated you want luxury now, and the LS (along with the GTZ) has leather seating, Infinity sound system, side air bags, alloy wheels included in the LS package. I test drove an ES4cyl, a ESV6, and the GTZ, The GTZ had a more solid feel about it, not sure why, but it was quieter, and w/ the leather also has a more "upscale" look. If you could get a V6Honda w/ leather & primo sound system for the same as the LS, I'd take the Honda, but if you can find the LS for about 1500 less, I'd take the Galant, plus the Galant looks better In my opinion. Either car would be a good choice, if you have a good local dealer, that could sway the choice too! Good luck!
  • 4u24u2 Member Posts: 17
When I was in the market to buy a new car I chose the Galant for a number of reasons. I live in a metropolitan city where car theft is rampant. The Accord is one of the top stolen cars. Moreover, it didn't offer an engine immobilizer. The Galant offers an engine immobilizer where the engine will not start unless with a key that transmits a signal to a computer. Also, I have over 10K miles in my 2001 Galant ES V6, and have not encountered any problems. Last night, another friend just complemented me on the car!! Tell us what you decide.
  • tallgaltallgal Member Posts: 14
I am so glad I read your comment about the timing belt! I had mine replaced a couple of weeks ago, and have been going back and forth with my mechanic ever since! It is still off, I can tell. It vibrates, and while excelerating, jumps to 3-4000 rpm's . It is driving me nuts! I will insist that someone else look at it. I thought it had to be the timing belt, but now I know, thanks to you, it is probably the balance belt.
As far as your question about the antenna.... I don't think they make a rubber one for the 94. I paid $78 for a new antenna and installed it. You will need help though, as one person needs to turn on the car, while the other pulls the antenna all the way out. Then plug in the new one.
  • truckdude1truckdude1 Member Posts: 88
Hi is a 1999-2000 galant with 50000 miles still dependable? we hear the rental places sell them generally cheap, our friend has a 95'ES with 79,663 miles and he had to put in some money, but its noisy and the 4cyl is slow? do any of you know anything on the new ones, how fast it is or reliablilty? will the 4 cyl suite two or three people on the freeway at 85?..Well Respond ASAP.thanks
  • drobinson19drobinson19 Member Posts: 11
The 99-2000 model Galants are much better than the older models. The new 4 cylinders are much quieter and improved over the pre-99 models and a little more powerful. The interior is much nicer, the outside styling is much improved, and overall ride and handling in vastly improved. If you are worried about speed then look for an ES V6. Quieter more powerful engine, better 4 wheel disc brake setup, 16 in. rims, and a few other features over an ES 4 cylinder. For just a little more. Its probably the best bargain in the bunch. I bought an 01 LS V6 3 and 1/2 months ago. It has 3200 miles on it. I have had no problems and absolutely love it. I would recommend the Galant to anyone.
  • cajun626cajun626 Member Posts: 54
The first shop also had the WRONG non-Mitsu timing belt on the car. Your shop will probably swear to you that all marks are lined up like mine did (apparently the balance belt can be off even with marks lined up). Demand your money back and take it to a dealer. Thanks for the advice on the antenna, but I decided to just pull the plug to the ant. motor. Radio works fine (ant. is stuck 1/2 up), grinding noise is gone and I'm too cheap to pay $78.

I am worried a lot about the recall of it . Is it reliable and worth of the price? Thanx

My 2k Galant ES has been a great car but has one little annoyance and I am told by the dealer "they are all that way" but would like to get some feedback. The thing is: with the HVAC set in the "floor" mode, you continue to get a lot of air directed to the defrost vents. I notice it most when the weather is cold and I am trying to warm my feet but don't want the hot air blasting me in the face. You can easily check it by selecting the floor mode and putting the fan on 3 or 4 and checking the flow through the defrost vents. As I said, mine is fairly strong. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Other than that a great car, but I will say the "noise, vibration, harshness" level is a little higher than some other comparable cars in terms of ride quality. A lot of that probably comes from the tires.
  • tallgaltallgal Member Posts: 14
thanks for the advice on the timing belt, once again. You are right... the mechanic (family friend for 20 years) says everything matches up perfectly. Said he also checked the balance belt, and "all is well" there. I know they were MITS. timing and adjuster belts, along w/ the tentioner, I picked them up at the dealership. TODAY...GET THIS!!! He said that my TRANNY is going out! NO WAY! 63k miles, and WELL taken care of?!! I made an appt. with the dealership, explained what was happening, and the dealers mechanic said he thinks I have been right all along, that someone screwed up something w/ the belts. The day I picked it up after the belts were replaced, I started the car, and knew something was wrong! This is when I hate been a woman- dealing w/ mechanics! Thanks again for all of your help. Glad to know that you still get music at "half staff" ha! I hate those expensive antennas too. I said I would only replace one once! Thanks and let's stay in touch!
  • ern35ern35 Member Posts: 11
Your comment about your tranny going sounds all too familiar to me. I have a '95 ES and mine went at 52,000 mi. I too take care of my car, all the regular maintenance, etc. and still had problems with it. Unfortunately, this seems to be a common problem with the Galants. So far, knock on wood, the new one seems to be ok, but I can tell you I will never buy another Mitsubishi!
  • cbnearlacbnearla Member Posts: 28
I have a 2K ES-V6. Yes, some of the air is diverted to the defrost as you describe. I seem to remember seeing that mentioned in the manual, as being normal, but my memory could be faulty :). Since I live in So.Cal I've never had to turn the heat up at such high fan speeds to be bothered by hot air in the face, though I can see where that could be annoying in colder climates. I agree that, compared to the way other cars HVAC operates, this seems like a malfunction, but it doesn't bother me enough to complain to the dealer about it.

As to the NVH issue, yeah, there's probably more road noise in the cabin than some of the competition, but our cars cost less. Fair trade-off to me. I did replace the horrible Goodyear Eagle LS tires with Bridgestone Potenza RE-930's at about 100 miles. Handling improved, and road noise seemed a little less with the Bridgestones.

I had the car driven this weekend by a friend/Mitsubishi mechanic. He said that a lot of people have been told their trannies are going, when it is actually their "in clutch", which, when bad, causes slippage in fourth gear shifting only. Part is $300, labor is $400. You may have been taken to the cleaners? Who knows! Anyway..he says the timing belt is still off in my 94, and the tranny is fine. We shall see. I am just so tired of getting the run-around! I am looking at the new Subaru's now. The Legagy GT LTD sedan. Much safer, more horsepower, great resale, no recalls!

Hi guys, just bought a 2000 Galant ES with 16k miles. I've skimmed the last 50 posts or so, trying to catch up. I've noticed many people recommending frequent tranny fluid/filter changes because of tranny problems around 100k miles. With the driving I do, 100k is only about 2 years away, and I'm wondering if any of you have had experience with these tranny problems. What symptoms have you had and what have replacements/rebuilts cost you? Thanks!

    Hello gallant owners,

I have a blk 99ES with 16k on it and its been great.

One problem I've been having a leak on rainy days around the sunroof area

its actually on the inside area on front of the dome lights. on rainy days after a while when I'm driving and hit the brakes water flows down onto my gear-shift area

has anyone had this problem. had the sunroof replaced and its raining in NC this morning and I noticed my gear shift stick was wet when I drove this morning. Some info would be helpful.
