Actually I did notice your earlier post, but thanks for reminding me. My noise seems to be different from yours in that it's noticeable even when the car is cold (e.g. I can push the clutch pedal in and out when the car is sitting w/o the engine running and hear the noise). So it's possible my problem is different but I will keep your note in mind when I take it to the dealer.

I was really disappointed in Toyota (and I've owned several) when I tried their web site's comparison between the LE and the GLS. Unlike Honda, whose web site flat-out shows you that the GLS is better, Toyota gives you slanted information, avoids anything detrimental, and makes a big deal out of nothing ("Corolla has a much better corrosion warranty - unlimited vs 100,000 miles!" - great). The site is poorly designed and the car is a lot more expensive. They oughta be ashamed!

I just bought a 2002 Elantra today and I already have a concern.

After driving it from the dealar to my house, approximatly 20 miles, I smelled like the brakes were burning. I drove it later tonight and the same thing happened.

My boyfriend told me that since is a new car, it's just braking-in.

    Is this normal brake-in?

burning off. Look at some of the other posts on these forums. Usually lasts about a week or so.

My mother bought a GLS last August. In December, the right windshield wiper quit working (fixed under warranty). Yesterday, she opened the right rear door, and all the weatherstripping surrounding the top of the door fell away. Neither item is at all earth-shattering, but it does begin to cause concern on a car with only 3,600 miles on it. Anyone care to offer reassurance?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
A windshield wiper that stops working for no reason at all (am assuming there was no reason, no abnormal strain on the wiper etc.) is not good, but at least it is a minor problem in the grand scheme of things. If it happens again I'd wonder. My GLS' wipers have held up through almost two full Minnesota winters, one a cold one and one a mild one, so your mom may have just got a bum part. Re the weatherstripping, I noticed when I first got my GLS that a few of the little plastic fasteners that attach the weatherstripping to the left rear door had popped out (or maybe were never fully seated). I popped them back in and have had no further trouble. It's possible that on your mom's door the weatherstripping was not installed properly at the factory. Might want to have the dealer check it to be sure all the fasteners are intact and properly seated. Also I think it helps to coat the weatherstripping at least once a year with Armor-All or something similar. This helps avoid sticking and keeps the rubber pliable. I've done this to all my cars for many years.

Don't worry sharing1. I got a similar smell in my 2001 VE (GLS) which lasted for more than a month. It seems to be a coating they put to protect the car during the cruise from Korea, or is something related with a rust protection for the floor pan.

I don't think GTS is coming out. If GTS thing is true, Hyundai suppose to make one by now and release in Korea. (They always made new model year earier than US)

And I think the rumor about XG350 sports sedan will not be true, since they're doing only facelift of the XG350 this year.

Also, I heard one rumor that Hyundai's gonna release LZ450(Hyundai USA web site has picture of it) in 18 months for about $30000, which is V8. I hope this rumor is true.

However, if Hyundai decides to make GTS for US only, that'll will be great. or At least more hp for all Hyundai models. (like 200hp for Tiburon? or 160~170 for elantra? something like that)

Here's email I got 05Feb02 from Hyundai management:"A new special 2002 Elantra GT model will be coming out in May that is based on the 4 dr sedan including lots of upgrades." I REALLY don't expect a horsepower increase, but all the other GT features are welcome.
  • mike91326mike91326 Member Posts: 251
When I talked to the service manager last week he told me about the GTS coming out in late May. He said that it will be a 4-door GT and will be priced between the GLS an GT. He also said that a possible 6-speed would be offered as an option in the GTS and GT in the fall of this year. As far as a XG350S, he indicated that the "S" would come with 17" wheels and a sports suspension.

2)What grade gas are you guys putting in?.Manual says you can put in 87 on up......

    THANKS

Sharing1: My Elantra GT's burning smell also lasted a while. It finally went away after I drove the car about 950 miles.

I now have 1200 miles on my GT, and I like it quite a bit so far (carbon blue, auto, Package 11). A month into my purchase, I'm glad I didn't spend the extra $3,000 on a comparably equipped Mazda Pro5. Just one thing doesn't seem to be working: the low fuel indicator light. The owner's manual is not specific about when this light is supposed to go on, but, just to experiment, I've let it run as low as 14 gallons down on its 14.5 gallon tank, and still no light. Until I have a chance to get it checked out, I'm just going to fill up at around the 1/4 full point. It's really not a big deal, but does anybody know when this light is supposed to illuminate?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
If it's true that the "GTS" will be available in May, then they should be showing up in port in San Diego pretty soon. I hope whoever did the reconnaissance on the GT last spring and spied them on the docks in San Diego before some dealers even heard about them can come through again with advance reports of the GTS.

It seems my low fuel indicator light (on lower portion of fuel gauge) comes on when I have between 1-2 gallons left in the tank. While this light is on if you look at your trip computer thingee you'll see that familiar gas pump icon showing your "range of miles" left in tank...so, if I average say, 30 mpg, and have about 2 gallons left when low fuel light is on...this "range of miles" display shows about 60.
Now, the other day after my low fuel light came on, I drove it almost down to fumes (ie at fill up I had about 1/2 gal left!!) AND guess what??
When I got below 1 gallon in tank, and the computer thingee "range of miles" got BELOW 30 THE GAS PUMP ICON BEGAN FLASHING and the number 30 disappeared! Bottomline for me: when fuel gauge light comes on you have 1-2 gallons... when the gas pump icon flashes you have less than 1 gallon remaining. Hope this helps.

Well it finally happened, I purchased my new 2002 Chianti Red GLS Automatic today!! I can say just after a short drive home and a 'once around' that I'm very impressed in the power the engine offers and the nice little things they thought to include.

Also, I'd like to thank those on these message boards which helped me make an informed, educated decision and allowed me to feel as if I was in control. I had a fairly decent buying (first time) experience and I know it wouldn't have gone this well if not for the help you've given me. Thanks again and you can welcome a new club member :)

    Regards,

I would like to quote the guy above and ask you guys if you know how to know if your struts go bad. I also want to know what fuel you put in the car and if the rattles in the doors are covered in the warranty. Thank you.

    Hi all,

I have an 01 Elantra Automatic GLS which is approaching the 25K mile mark. It has been flawless and I have not had a single problem as of yet. This will be the first time the car is taken to the dealership since I bought it. I am about to do the 30K mile service and would like to know what should usually be done. Some of the work I will do because I don't think it is too difficult.

This is what I plan to do or have done:
Tune up - I will do. Just replace spark plugs since I believe no timing adjustment is necessary since we have direct ignition engine
Oil and lube - I will do since I always do this anyway
Fuel filter replace - have dealership do this
Transmission service - have dealership do this
Coolant flush - have dealership do this
Tires rotated and balanced - have dealership do this

    Anything else I am missing.

    Thanks,

    Shawn

Do at minimum everything mentioned in the manual for the 30k service interval, so there will be no debates later about warranty coverage and improper maintenance if something should break.

Re fuel: 87 octane, cheapest I can find.

Re rattles covered under warranty: yes for at least the first 12 mos/12,000 miles. After that I'm not so sure... may depend if you can track the rattle to some sort of defect.

Tell tale signs of bad struts are: squeaks, creaks, thumps, or loud rattles whenever you hit a bump, or the strut absorbs bumps with more then one up-down movement and feels floaty. Someone in the XG300 forum just had both rear shocks replaced under warranty. He was hearing a thump from the rear and the ride seemed overly busy. My Miata had a nasty loud rattle/thump whenever I hit a bump and the steering and ride was very darty and nervous feeling. It was traced to a leaking front strut.

When you see oil seeping out from them. They should be dry and clean.

I had been having a periodic problem (like others on this board) with very high revving (3000 rpm) for about 15 seconds on startup. Someone on the board mentioned the Throttle Position Sensor. The service shop had tried a couple of other things, but the problem would eventually return. I suggested the TPS to them earlier this week. Turned out they found it to be faulty ("dead spots?"), so replaced and reprogrammed. No problem since then, but time will tell.

Not a good idea to run the tank down. Makes it easier to suck up sediment from the tank floor and clog the injectors, IMHO.

I recently stumbled onto this site, and it has been so helpful. My 2001 Elantra GLS (pkg. 3, stick) was purchased last July, and I am very happy with it. We are approaching 9000 miles with no mechanical problems. Minor interior noises have been addressed by other members (thanks!) and the dealer service department is excellent (Fox Hyundai, Grand Rapids, MI). My license plate this year says "HOORAY" because I am delighted with Betsy 3.

So who was Betsy 2, you might ask. My only other new car (1987 Mercury Lynx GS 5-speed) was sold, not junked, with over 227,000 miles and 10 years of good service. Had a GM product in between (no comment). If a low-tech Escort clone of that vintage turned out to be such a peach, my Elantra should be too. Betsy 2 is dead (maybe), long live Betsy 3!

How weird to see a fellow Grand Rapidian here on Edmunds! Unfortunately, I cannot share your enthusiasm for the service dept. at Fox Hyundai. While they are generally kind and helpful, I have found them overall to be incompetant. I own an Accent, and every repair has required multiple visits to fix. For instance, I had one very annoying rattle coming from my instrument panel, which they tried to fix on FIVE different occasions (luckily, I only had them look at it when it was in for other reasons). I was wary to tear apart the dash, but when I finally broke down and did so, it only took me about an hour to isolate and fix the rattle. Sheesh. Too bad they caused at least two other intermittant rattles over the course of trying to fix the first one.

Anyway, I am also looking to buy an Elantra soon, do you have a salesperson to recommend? What kind of deal did you get?

    Thanks, DW
  • jimbeaumijimbeaumi Member Posts: 620
How weird to be called a Grand Rapidian (just passing through). :) Noises are just the worst for trying to get dealer help, aren't they? Because they NEVER seem able to replicate. Fox Hyundai has only had to repair an interior part one time on my car, so my experience is admittedly not as extensive as yours, and duly noted (the distribution folks, on the other hand sent an incorrect replacement part). My salesman has left Fox, I'm sorry to report, as he was far from the typical schmoozy and annoying sales type. But the Elantra deal he gave me was within dollars of the Consumer Reports Wholesale Price (far below invoice and sticker, of course). You will really enjoy the Elantra.

I was very pleased that Hyundai seems to be making
good progress. They have improved their vehicles tremendously to the extent that they now sell a decent vehicle at a good price. The other automakers have not done the consumer any favors. They insist on producing overpriced vehicles that people don't need (they just think they need). 25,000 dollars for an American piece of crap (or Japanese) is outrageous. To the point. I think it is a huge mistake for Hyundai to come out with a 30,000 dollar V8 powered sedan. At this point in time who would by a 30,0000 dollar Hyundai even if it is a good car. They need to continue improving their current selection of vehicles. It is to early for them to try and move into another market area.
  • gt_fangt_fan Member Posts: 159
Hyundai USA didn't particularly want the XG300/350 for the same reasons you stated, (who would pay $25,000 for ANY Hyundai) but the Korean suits talked them into it. As it turns out, it's sold twice as many units as even the factory guys hoped it would.

IMHO, a $30,000 V8 Hyundai would sell well as long as it offered the same formula as the rest of the line up; more features, less money, nice styling and killer warranty. People with more money to spend don't like to waste it any more than the rest of us.

hi everybody. i have a dilema and need advice. I have been considering an accent gs 5 speed for about one year. I am ready to make a purchase in 3 weeks. I have been quoted prices of about 10 thousand. the last few weeks, i have seen elantra ads at 3 dealerships offering a gls for the same amount of money, 5 speed. should i get the elantra?
i have 3 reservations about the elantra, even though it is more car for the money.
    1. less storage space than the hatchback accent because of the trunk frame. the elantra does not fold down all the way.
    2. less gas mileage than the accent.
    3. parking is tougher because it is a longer car.
having said that...if i can get the elantra for the same price as the accent...10 thousand dollars..should i buy it? thanks for the advice
  • jimbeaumijimbeaumi Member Posts: 620
Without question, the Elantra is the better car.
  • jyk1981jyk1981 Member Posts: 37
If you can get Elantra GT for just little bit more money, then get the GT.
it will solve your problem #1 the storage space and #3 parking.
  • csandstecsandste Member Posts: 1,866
but the Elantra is a far more competant car IMHO. How would you get them at the same price?
  • mpgmanmpgman Member Posts: 723
The Elantra, even in basic form, is much more car for the dollar. Check out the standard content for yourself. The Accent is a terrific buy as a stripped 5 speed. When you start adding options, it gets into Elantra territory. For that matter, a basic 5 speed, 4 cylinder Sonata might be the best buy of them all.

Hello all, I just test drove an Elantra back to back with a Protege this past weekend and while I felt everything was comparable (except for the sticker on the Hyundai, $2000.00 less!) I was a little put off by how soft the Elantra is sprung. The dealer didn't have a GT for me to test drive, but he said it was a little stiffer. Two questions...

    1. Is the GT much stiffer and better handling than a regular Elantra?

    2. Has anyone experimented with stiffer springs or shocks to help their Elantra be a little less mushy?

Overall I was impressed, it's amazing the amount of content they squeeze into these cars at such a reasonable price! Plus the warranty! All in all it seems like a pretty good deal.

I recently bought a 2002 Elantra GLS automatic and am happy with it overall, but the steering wheel locks only if the wheel is turned all the way clockwise or counterclockwise. As far as I know, once the key is turned to the lock position, the wheel should lock easily. I don't know what's causing the problem and whether it's serious or not.
  • browneybrowney Member Posts: 104
I had the Shift Flare from 2nd-3rd TSB fix done on my 01 Elantra (now at 12,000mi)this weekend.
It seems to have helped with the Flare problem but since it has only been 2 days I will wait to say for sure.
I saw the new 02 Sonata on the showroom floor and was impressed by it's new styling. Front grill, headlights, and taillights are much more up to date with the current market.
If I was in the market for a new car I think that would be my first pick.
The Slate Gray was nice but I would like to see it in the Pine Green. They had an 02 Santa Fe in the Pine Green and it was sharp.
They also had some 02 Tiburons. IMHO they are much better looking than the older tiburons and the dashboard is less Star Trekkish. ;-)

Can anybody recommend a good Hyundai dealer in the Bay Area? I live in the East Bay (Pleasanton) so the closer to there the better. Thanks!!

Check out Dublin Hyundai, on 580 near 680. They had a good selection, certainly of Elantras. Sales guy there Zac Rose was pretty eassy to talk to. Gave me the keys and sent me off on the test drive. Disclaimer: I've done no real business with them.
  • fsohrabifsohrabi Member Posts: 2
Does anyone know what might cause the steering wheel to lock only with great difficulty? I have a new Hyundai Elantra GLS and this is my only problem. I'm concerned it might be a prelude to something more serious. Is it normal to have to turn the wheel all the way clockwise or counterclockwise in order to lock the wheel in place? Any suggestions from budding mechanics out there would be great.
  • mike91326mike91326 Member Posts: 251
This is normal. Almost all cars made in the last 5 to 10 years only lock the steering wheel in one or two places. I have a 2001 Elantra GLS, a 1997 Ply Voyager, and a 1995 Buick Regal, and the steering locks the same on all three. I guess the manufactures feel that if someone steals your car, by hot-wiring it, that the wheel will lock up the first time they try to make a turn.

Does the GLS comes with four discs if I go for the ABS (option 5, I believe) or just ventilated front disc / rear drum brakes ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, it would come with 4 discs, as well as traction control, if you get package 5.

At about 5-10mph over bumpy roads I hear a rattle(not sure if it's coming from the dash or not, it's hard to tell where it's coming from), anyone else have this problem & any idea where it's coming from???...Also, small speaker in left door is no good....The car has 500 miles, everything else is ok so far....
  • lokannalokanna Member Posts: 22
I just got back from taking a 350 mile drive and have some questions. At around 90-100mph (no one else near me, don't worry) the car started to make a dull screach sound. At the time, I thought it might be the TCS I had, however, it wasn't engaged. I then hit the button and it still made that noise.

Could anyone have a possible reason why it would make that noise? If it's normal, that's one thing, but now I'm paranoid =) Thanks.
  • csandstecsandste Member Posts: 1,866
spent several hours one day driving around trying to figure out a rattle in the dash. Turns out I had disengaged one of the visors from the clip. I guess if I'd tilted my head so one ear was up I would have figured it out earlier.
  • jyk1981jyk1981 Member Posts: 37
check between front bumper and tire, the back of front bumper might be worned off.

My car made similar scratch noise above 60 miles, so I went to dealer and I found out that one of screw fall off from front bumper.
Since there's one screw missing, when I make hard turns or speeding, the bumper and tire stuck together and scratch each other.
I didn't know that so, when I found out the back part of the bumper was already gone. $90 to replace that part(I think that part is called as front fender(?) or something like that).

My wife and I love are Elantras. Wife has a 2001 Elantra GLS auto with option package 5. I have a 2002 Elantra GT 5spd. We love both of these cars, and they fit are life-style wonderfully. The GLS is a great commuter car with great options the wife wanted ABS and traction control. The GLS has close to 13,000 miles on it with no problems so far. The GLS is a great cruiser, with lots of room in back and in the trunk. Of course I love my GT, I wanted sport ride with the flexibilty of a hatch. I would have to say that I drove an Accent for about a day or so as a loaner and I was miserable, since one it was automatic and two it didnt have half the options my Elantra has, I guess I became spoiled, after drinving the Elantras. I am very pleased with are purches and saved a bundle of cash, from the other cars I looked at. I saved about 11,000 dollars from the car I was going to purchase, the 2002 Acura RSX type S. Well happy motoring everyone.

I'm wondering if any drivers have racked up some serious miles on their 2001 Elantra and how the cars are performing over the long haul. Any owners out there with over 60,000 miles on their cars? Many like me are impressed with this car (and Hyundai's warranties) but are witholding consideration until they show their mettle....
