Mr. Vivona are you still there ???

Mr. Vivona OR ANYONE, I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THE RPM'S FLUCTUATING UP AND DOWN ABOUT 500 800 RPM'S. THIS HAPPENS OCCASIONALLY WHEN COMING TO A STOP AT DRIVEWAY OR PARKING LOT. ALSO WHILE I AM DRIVING IT SEEMS TO OCCUR.

    WHAT DO YOU THINK?

FYI...APPARENTLY THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING LONG ENOUGH TO DAMAGE THE TRANNY OVER TIME. JUST REPLACED IT.

    THANKS,NEWBY.

Yes, I am still here. I only visit a few times a month, though, as traffic has dwindled to a few mechanical questions that would require further diagnosis in order to properly respond.

My 1999 Diamante is still running perfectly, with over 51,000 miles and no problems. My brake rotors are original and still perfect. It runs just like the day I bought it and I still enjoy driving it every day. This has been an excellent car. The same is true of my wife's 2002.

Since Mitsubishi killed the Diamante by the ugly 2004 restyling and the lack of advertising, there has been little new interest in this excellent car of the recent past. I will continue to own mine for many more years, as will my wife. When it comes time to buy a new car, I don't know what I would buy. No one car appeals to me the way the Diamante did. I'll just have to see what is available in five or six years from now.

Good, to hear your ok... seems sad indeed about the faith of the Diamante in the US when I see the models still come out in the Aussie and New Zealand market.

My 1999 Diamante except for some parking lot scrapes and a minor head to tail collision with an old lady driving a SUV is in otherwise good shape.

I had to change rotors with Raybestos brand rotors as somebody on eBay sold a new pair for $50 all up. I also tried ceramic brakes and I like them.

You were right about the cheap brake pads. If they don't fit right, like if the pad is even a 1mm shorter than the rotor, you will notice when the rotors wear down with time, a lip will form at the outer edge of the rotor. When its time to replace the pads then pulsation will be felt when braking at high speed.

Otherwise mechanically things are great at 50K miles. The look of the 2004 D is growing on me though and I want one but not in the $17K range. I would think they would buy one used when they go down in the $12K.

The Galant Mitsubishi is trying to push to us Diamante owners is the ugliest thing in their line up. Whoever designed that was either blind or on drugs.

I hope Mitsubishi rethinks its position on the Diamante and imports the model in the US again.

With the limited info you have provided this is usually indicative of the failure of the TPS (throttle Position Sensor).
It's a small part and costs around the $400 range to replace if I remember right. Usually some other parts that deal with engine idling are also replaced at the same time but I can't remember what. This happened to my friends 1996 Montero Sport.

I don't know how this would effect your tranny. Your car is almost 14 years old and parts wear down which requires maintenance.

    Good Luck...

i have a 93 diamante and it ran good till i went to jail and someone ripped out the stereo and speakers. i was left with a wireing nightmare. i finaly got it all back together but some times its hard to start if its been sitting awhile. it will run for about 10 - 20 minz and die for some reason. i noticed when its running it runs kinda rough but you can take the vacume line or oil cap off and it seems to run alot more smoother. upon removing the oil cap, the oil in the vavle cover smelt like a oil/gas mixture. i've also noticed oil on my plugs.

I have a 2002 VRX that I bought used with only 6000 miles as a demo.Got a great deal at $13,800. The brakes pulsated and steering wheel shook when I purchased it. I had rotors turned at 9000 miles and at 11000 miles same issue-noises, wheel shakes and pulsation. Dealer said rotors warped and wanted $555 to replace and I needed to pre pay for parts! Went to Midas and I did job with pads for $374. Of course, they are using aftermarket parts. I just could not justify price difference. Any experience with Midas? Also, is this going to be a recurrent problem. Have read about use of poor pads etc causing rotors to have to be turned etc. Did I make a mistake? any advise regarding rotors/break wear is appreciated. I had a 2001 LS which was totaled at 35,000 miles with no brake issues. Am concerned about long term reliability as thsi experience has made me wary of this model or perhaps just this specific car
  • ccancioccancio Member Posts: 91
    Brant,
I wouldn't worry about the brakes. Like I wrote on an earlier post, the cheap pads I bought from Partamerica(Kragen) was smaller than the rotor so it formed a lip on the outer edge. Just torque them right...

Re. Midas, there is a recurring joke that make sure the youngest mechanic isn't the one assigned to do the job as he is learning on the job and practising on your car. It's like the McDonalds of mechanics, their first job...

Buying and installing rotors and brakes isn't very hard if you're mechanically inclined. Did you make sure you told them to tighten the lug nuts with a torque wrench and witness them to just that?

As with your VRX did you notice that the LS seems more refined inside the cabin than the VRX? Like I see more cheapie looking plastic parts than in the LS model? I do ike the agressive look with the spoiler. What color?

Also I noticed you posted that you were in a bad accident with your 2001 LS , do you have photos to share?

    Thanks-

Hopefully I lucked out at Midas. This franchise shop uses only certified mechanics-I forget the designation. The owner admits he has a hard time finding competent help.
How long should rotors last? Most of my driving is to and from work in the city around 20 miles a day. I do get it out on the road on weekends. As to VRX quality, I do not see a drop off compared to my LS. I was surprised that it had no radio controls on the wheel, no trunk light and only one trip odometer. I feel it rides harder, but I still have the Goodyear tires on it that I did not like in my 2011 Any tire reccomendations?
I have no accident pictures. I was hit straight on to the drivers door. She was probably going 25 on a curve and lost control-she took out part of back door and significant damage behind right from fender. Drivers door only caved a little. It would not open, so I climbed out the passenger side.I was amazed that it was totaled and that without side airbags, I was not hurt. I saw a Diamante hit the median wall on I-285 in the rain and he was going fast. He spun around and the car held well-the driver was able to get out and was not significantly injured. Were we both lucky or de we have a car with great integrity?

I just want to share my experience with the air conditioning problem in my Diamante 97. Twice I was referred to dealership after routine( computerized) diagnostics in the local garages. At the dealership first they charged me $99 for diagnostics, then they told me that in order to determine what causes the problem they need to put in 2 pounds of freon- $70 more. Then I was told that my radiator is not functioning properly and the heating is not up to the specifications and it might in turn affect the AC system - $130 more. I agreed. In the end of 4th hour of being at the dealership the cause was finally found - the expansion valve. They promised to find the part for lesser price - off market part, otherwise total would be $1079 (including the previous charges)So, the cost of the valve plus labor would be $ 770. I am not quite sure if I want to go for it, but considering that more than $300 already spent, I might want to finish the job. Of course, it might look like a banal rip-off, but somehow I did not get an impression of dishonesty, dealing with these people. There were very nice and exceptionally friendly. I'd appreciate any commentaries. Thank you
  • rayk3rayk3 Member Posts: 9
Just want to add: I found out that the expansion valve is sold on a couple of sites and is priced somewhere between $110 and $140.
I am wondering how many hours of labor at Freehold Mitsubishi they need in order to replace the part so the total price would be over $1000? Something to think about...

Anybody else have a similar situation? If so Please help! 1995 Diamante LS DOHC 3.0 Liter 134,xxx Miles. When I got this car It was running kinda poor like a cyclinder wasnt firing, which after further investigation I found the #1 Plug and wire were completely disconnect from one another. Dont know how long previous owner was driving like this but changed all Front plugs (I am getting to the back ones once Intake Plenum gaskets come in, what a Pain!!) and throughly cleaned the TB and car was running Excellent! For about 2 weeks, alittle over 1000 miles since bought the trans slipped one time going from 3 to 4 (Overdrive on and power AT mode off, normal driving) So I take it to Jiffy Lube for a transmission Purge ($99.99) and the Kid at the place had a really hard time getting the system to pressurize and "purge" in fact he ended up "purging and filling" twice to get it right. The trans fluid that came out was dirty and very dark but not quite black. He fills the pan back up with their Magic ATF hose Fluid and adds a bottle of additive. I pay and drive away. 50 miles later the trans starts slipping while in regular driving (Again overdrive on & AT power mode off) Its slipping trying to go into 4 and just feels like it jumps to neutral when braking then fixes itself and slams back into a low gear. The car eventually went into 3rd and remained there, some safety feature according to manaul. Anyways I dump approx 3-4 onces of Lucas Trans additive in it and she goes back to changing gears but continuing to slip. Now I took it back to Jiffy lube today they look at it and tell me that it's not the service they did but the mitsubishi transmission is a piece of sh*t (The manager actually said this to me) He tells me to take it to a specialist and let him know what they say....not much help this guy. Now I figured out if I Take the overdrive off and drive the transmission does not slip at all and shifts perfectly through L - 3rd of course limiting my speeds though to around 60-70mph w/ rpms nearing 5000. As soon as overdrive is put back on ....vrooooooommmmm slips right into a nuetral position and does not catch back into gear until rpms and speed drops....I am so sorry for the long story guys ANY ADVICE OR TIPS would be so appreciated. THANKS! Billy

Please help? Ms Molly Diamante won't start. She's a '93 with DOHC V6 just like many 92-95 Diamantes and 3000 GT's. We made her battery go dead. We had her battery tested and charged. It's ok. Everything works, lights, radio, etc. However, when we turn her key. She clicks once and doesn't even try to turn over. She ran just fine before we ran the battery down. We have activated, set off, and de-activated her alarm. She still won't start. Please anyone? Can you please tell us how to get her started? Do we need to pull a plug or press a button to reset her ignition from being locked by the alarm?

    Information on my car:
    Model:1997 Mitsubishi Diamante LS
    Exterior:Versailles Green Metallic
    Interior: Tan Leather
    Mileage: 67,000 miles
    Paid: $7,200

I just bought my car in March of 2006. I am pretty sure I got a very good deal. You should have seen the bare bone cars I could get for around $7,000. This car came with leather, power windows, power door locks, power moonroof, power seats with memory, power and heated mirrors, power antenna, 6 speaker CD player with 10-disk CD changer in the trunk, 16" alloys with newer tires, fog lights, and most importantly a V-6. This was a big step up from my last car being a 1992 Geo Storm with manual everything.

Pro's-performance, handling, amount of features for your money, depreciation-good in my case because I got the car a 1/4 price of when it was new, the stereo, interior room, pretty much everything.

Con's-gas mileage, brakes, wind-noise from sunroof,

    Few questions:

    1. Do you really need to use premium gas or is this just for optimal performance? Will using regular do any harm to the engine?

    2. Since my car has 69,000 miles currently, should I look into getting a Timing belt? If so, what should I expect to pay for parts and labor, so that I do not get swindled?

    3. I know about the infamous heater core problems with this car, but I have noticed since day one the driver's side front window fogs up very easily. But for what I have seen, people say that their passenger side window will fog up because that is the side with the heater core. Does anyone else have this problem with their driver's side window, is this normal??

    4. No matter how I drive or where I drive, I consistently get 18-19 MPG and I know they are supposed to get 18 to 26 MPG. Is there any tricks of the trade to get my gas mileage up? The air filter is like brand new, use gas treatments, and just got an oil change.

    5. I did notice a place for speakers on the dashboard. Has anyone found out if there is speaker wire there to hook up my own speakers?

    6. I too, have that same brake noise. When I bought the car, I had the dealership machine the rotors and check the brakes. When I am doing regular slow stops there is absolutely no noise. But when you really press down or are braking while going downhill, I hear the unpleasant grinding noise. Is there any antidote for this?

    7. With the heated mirrors. I put snow directly on them and they did nothing, they were not even warm. Is this just a defroster for condensation or what?

If you have any suggestions, feel free to reply.

hi. I'm having a similar problem, except it was precision tune. They put dextron III, in my car at trans flush, and won't fix it because they gave my money back, due to them continuing to put improper fluid levels. I now have no 2nd or 4th gear. If you check the specs in your manual, you will see that you cannot add additive, and that you have to use only the fluids specified for your car. I recommend having your trans flushed with the right fluids.

  • renncarsrenncars Member Posts: 1
I bought my 99 Diamante new. I currently have 198,000 miles on it. I have always used regular gas with no loss in performance. I replace my Timing Belt every 75,000 miles and my oil every 5,000 miles. My D still runs and looks like new. I have never had a heater core or A/C problem. The round plastic inserts on each side of the dashboard do have speaker wires connected to the backside of the inserts. I check my mileage on every fill up and I get from 18 - 22 mpg. Highway, city and heavy right foot does influence what side of the spectrum you end up. I still live with grinding brake noise. The VX pads typically are quiet but they create too much brake dust for my white/polished alum 17" rims so I use ceramic which are the cleanest but the loudest. I turn up my stereo. It has been a great car & I have no plans of ever getting rid of it.

I have been reading this board, ever since I bought my Diamante LS, new, in 2000. I now have 117,000 miles and the car continues to run great and looks almost new! I have had 3 sets of front rotors and 2 rear, including new pads each time. I replaced the timing belt and spark plugs, at 100K. The AC condesor was replace at 110K due to a leak caused by corrosion.($550) I am on my third set of tires, the current ones are made by "Kumho" and I like them the best, so far..they are inflated with nitrogen and rarely lose any presssure. Everything still works on my car, except the antennae. It stopped raising and lowering, but the radio still works with the antennae in the up position. The oil gets chenged every 3-4K and the tires are rotated every 7500. The car has really grown on me over the years and I can't justify spending 30-40K for something in that category, that probably isn't made as well as the Diamante. The paint and finish on that car are second to none and I still love to crank up the Infinity stereo and ride in style down the highway. I will probably drive this car to 200K, before I consider a new replacement. Happy Trails to all of you Diamante owners.....

Follow-up to my problem with AC. (Post#1389)
I decided to go ahead and fix it. The compression valve was replaced and I paid another $770 in addition to $330 for diagnostics and freon. The moment I drove my car out of the dealership's garage the AC did not work. I notified the manager and he told me to came back for the check. On the last receipt which stated that the valve was replaced, I saw he another notice: Compressor might start fail. I have not been told anything about compressor after the diagnostics, now when I brought my car again for the check, they say there is a problem with the compressor and it is going to cost me another $1,500... So, if I go for it, my total would be $330+ $770+ $1500= $2600...
Then after some pressure from my side they agree to fix AC if I pay them $1, 200 ( on top what I have paid already- more than one thousand). After the diagnostics not a word was said about the faulty compressor, otherwise I could just leave AC as it was.
I am taking them to the court, I am sure and my attorney confirmed that , I have a very good case.
I wish people learn from situations like this.
That's the way Mitsubishi/ Suzuki dealership in Freehold,NJ on Rt 9 condacts its business. I'll do my best to publicize this case. I know how.

I recently bought my daughter a 1995 D as her first car , at $2500 I thought it was a steal. The air needs work but the car is great otherwise. That is until she made the mistake of turning on the headlights after the key was out , not knowing they were ON, she killed the battery. one jump brought it back to life but radio won't work due to access code. Well the previous owner didn't give me the handbook or nuttin!

    HELP!!!
  • precise86precise86 Member Posts: 2
this is an issue that occurs alot with the newer "d"'s, Esp after replacing a battery, normally u would have at least 15 mins after removal of the original battery to save the codes but a dealership will have used a "Memory saver" to save codes, and pre-sets just in case it took longer. Unfortunately the only option u have now is to take it to a dealership to find the code via tracing the "VIN". That in itself is pretty pricey for such a smal amt of service, since ur at this point I wopuld consider "upgrading" the stereo unit completely because the price they would charge to retrieve the code would be the same as replacing it.

I have a 1997 Diamante and out of no where this morning my power locks stopped working. Everytime I press the lock or unlock button the driver's side, I hear a click everytime. Nothing happens when I press the buttons on the Passenger's Side. I looked through the manual and at the fuses and there doesn't seem to be a fuse for it. Can someone help me to find this problem because I really don't want to have to pay $95 an hour for Firestone to troubleshoot this electrical issue. Please Help.

One more note, my rig also has an intermittant issue with on/off ramps.. It will seem to under-steer (from the back), if I make any sort of movement when continuing through an on/off ramp. I am not going excessivly fast, but it seems to want to sway left to right, sort of from the back.. almost to the point of loosing control.. And if I drive on Ice or snow, it seems to want to come out from under me, (fish tail of sorts) Could I guess at it? sure, maybe the rear struts, wheel drag, tires?? any help would be appreciated..

    Thank you.

Ya know, I went thru this nightmare once where in trying to remove a lug nut the nut got stripped, in my attempt to get it off I ended up making it worse , turning the nut into a metal blob, thus permantly welding my tire on. So on another car I own I was getting tires at Sam's cause htier prices r so good, and I asked the guy writting up my ticket if they could use hand tool. If I understood him correctly he was saying that thier new pnuematics are very sophisticated and will tighten nut just right , better that a clicking tourque. Course it will be easier for them and quicker 4 both of us, but if he was being square i guess that makes since.

    My car:
    2002 3.5 liter Diamante
    Milage: 60,000
    exterior: green
    interior: beige leather
    Purchased: 2003
    Milage at purchase: 12,000
    Price: $14,000

Only problem: heater core OR hoses, gaskets
    FOG WAS ON ALL WINDOWS
    ODOR
    DAMPNESS UNDER THE DRIVER'S FEET
BUT: I have been unable to determine which side the heater core is actually on. It seems that the hoses could come around on the driver's side, and gaskets could cause leakage.

This fabulous car, great engine and the best brakes I have ever experienced, must be my trade-in for a truck to pull my retirement RV.

I owe $4,000 on it. Should I resell now? Or pay it off first, at a rate that will take until at least take 20 more months?

Try code radio 3924. For my Diamante 2001 LS it works.
  • jerryterry22jerryterry22 Member Posts: 9
A Mitsubishi dealership service rep. told, when I asked about the $40 charge, that the radio must be pulled out, the serial number or model number is on top.

That number is needed to get the code from a dealership,(which makes the whole security thing a joke).

When the word CODE comes on the readio display, enter the code and press SET or press the button that turns the radio on, or the button "CD".

There is also a "trick" with digits that are large. Any
car audio installer can figure it out.

Good luck so you can "Listen to the Music".
  • jerryterry22jerryterry22 Member Posts: 9
Dealerships have the code (may want a fee) that you get from the top of the radio (or back) after taking the radio out of the dash.

A Mitsubishi dealership I called wanted two hours and $40 to do this. When I asked why, this was the anwser I got.

Once you get the code, any audio installer can figure out the buttons to push. Don't make the same mistake I did - AND BE SURE TO KEEP THE CODE IN THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT FOR FUTURE USE!

I'm looking at a 1997 Diamante ES. It has 170,000 miles. It has a oil leak. It's for 3 thousand. First off is it worth it? Second how much does it cost to fix oil leaks on these models? Generally does it require taking the engine out?
  • jerryterry22jerryterry22 Member Posts: 9
I apologize here since I have no experience with oil leaks on the Diamante.

I do know the oil leak might mean that maintenance (oil changes) may not have been performed as needed. That is a serious problem for an engine.

My Diamante is a 2002. It is a fabulous car. But at 60,000 miles, I have no experience with repair costs, but one man told me his daughter's accident resulted in shocks at $400 each!

That is al I can tell you related to the Diamante.

    Hello,
I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Diamante. My wife used my car and adjusted the AC. Now I can not get the AC to blow out of the center vents. I have tried every setting and still the air comes out very week of the center vents the air does come out of the side vents. I can here the air blowing behind the dash but everything I try does not help the air just will not come out of the center vents. I feel like I am getting 25% of the air coming out. I was going to order a new climate control for this but I am not sure if that is the problem.

    Please help

    Thanks

There's a dial to the left of your center vents. Turning that dial up reduces air flow. Turning it down increases air flow.
