A few days ago, the air bag light started flashing and I am wondering what is the best course of action. Is there any thing that I could try and might work. I am not a hands-on guy but simple things I can do. The mini van has 144 K miles. All advice is appreciated

Air-bag light is on> Very expensive to fix this problem correctly. Some "technicians" might simply dis-able the light and charge many 100's of dollars. Solution #1 - Don't get in a collision. The odds of you actually needing an air-bag in you lifetime is very, very small. Solution #2 If you suspect it's the passenger air-bag that faulty, hey, your wife usually sits there. What's the problem? Do the black-tape-over-the-light-trick.

My 96 Quest had the same problem. It is a $400 (not including labor) part that inflates it. Van was to old for that and I wear my seatbelt all the time. I was able to get the instrument cluster out far enough to get to the bulb. It doesn't unplug so I put a small piece of aluminum foil over it and stuck it back in. No more blinking and spent the $400 on myself.
