GMC Yukon Check Engine light

So I recently purchased a 2003 Yukon XL SLT and a little while later the CE light came on. Here in california you can't borrow the code reader from autozone anymore...any ideas how to retrieve those codes? i'm definitely a do-it-yourselfer and won't take it to the dealer/shop.

I have a 2001 Yukon XL with 160K miles on it. About two years ago the warning lights started acting up. The "Service Engine Soon" light will come on and stay on almost all the time. The parking brake light goes on and off, even though the brake is released. The ABS light stays on all the time. I had it checked by a GM trained mechanic. He said the Engine light is showing some evap codes, but he checked downstream and those components are ok. He can't explain the parking brake light, and he says the ABS system is working ok too.
I just moved to Texas and I can't get the car inspected and then registered unless these problems are all fixed. Any ideas out there about what's going on? When I take it to the shop what should I be looking out for? The car is serviceable, but I'd hate to dump $2-3000 into it. I don't know any of the mechanics in Texas, so I have no way of knowing if they are going to try to take me for a ride.
    Appreciate the help.

Tracking down weird electrical problems can be tough. I am the farthest thing you can get from a mechanic, but here are a couple of examples with my 2000 Denali (which has 180,000 mi):

The "service engine soon" light has been coming on intermittently for 3 years. GM dealer said I needed a new catalytic converter, which at that time was over $1000. (I think since then cheaper aftermarket options have came out, but the truck continues to run fine, including the same gas mileage so I can't see replacing it). The light didn't even come on for 2 mo, now it just popped back on again. Very frustrating.

I had a weird electrical problem for a while, with some interior lights going off and a fuse that kept blowing. I didn't want to pay a small fortune to have it tracked down. FINALLY I located it to the drivers power door lock, which seemed to have a little resistance. Lubricating that door lock solved the whole problem.

I guess if the car is running OK, I'd try one more mechanic, getting a quote on what the "diagnostic" price will be. Maybe you just have a short somewhere.

I just bought a 2001 GMC Yukon and ABS light has come on. What sort of service issue does this normally indicate and average cost? Is it strictly a dealer item or can a regular garage work on it?

I am not sure if its too late as your post was in August... Personally, I was tired of going to others for help to read trouble codes, so I just bought a code reader for about a hundred dollars (I wish I had bought a better one then as some of the more expensive ones have more functions specific to different brands of cars. I have also heard some methods about turning the ignition switch ON/OFF in a particular sequence will trigger the CE light to blink a number of times to represent the trouble code and etc... But, sorry I can not recall how that was done now.

trk has 80 + k miles runs and drives good. the light came on last week had the code read. today i go to fuel the trk and it takes forever cause all i can do is pump it in slow if i go fast it fills the neck up and shuts off at the handle. with 446 code is the evap canister bad or is it the vent soleniod or both. thought maybe with the slow fill that it might be linked to something. btw today was the first time to put gas in after light came on.
