Sprinter ABS light, traction control light on

Does your Sprinter have an ABS light or Traction control light on intermittently and does the engine derate the power?

1. Check your wheel speed sensors, rough roads can cause the speed sensors to back out away from the tone wheel. Reseat them by tapping them back in until they stop against the tone ring. They will be bumped out slightly after a few miles to the correct depth by movement in the bearing.

2. Check your brake light switch, located at the top of the brake pedal lever. if it is stuck on or intermittently sticking on the truck thinks you are trying to slow down while you have your foot on the gas. Computers don;t like these kind of messages so it thinks you have a problem. Click, on goes the light.

3. Check your high mount brake light, we have seen shorts in this light that can cause this same issue.

I have this problem now with a 2005 Sprinter 2500 diesel and the high mount brake light does not work at all , could that be the problem ? I bought brake light switch to replace but have not taken it out of package , hmmm? Also the fuel filter has not been changed in over 45,000mi. , I can replace this weekend but will it damage the engine if I wait another 600-800 miles?

Yes, the ABS light could be on due to the high mount brake light being out. We have had issues with the wiring at the corner of the roof inside where the wires to the high mount light pass through the body to the light. We have also seen harness issues behind the rear bumper where all the wires run. Rocks thrown up from the rear tires erode away the tape and wire insulation exposing the wires to corrosion.
A light on your dash will come on when your fuel filter is starting to plug up. You will also experience reduced power on acceleration if the filter is starting to plug. Good idea to change the filter now with 45k on it, not a problem to wait another 600-800 miles. I hope this helps.
