'01 LS V8 motor intermitantly skips

Hello everyone,
This is my first time on this site and I have been reading other discussions but not all just yet. I have had some questions answered but not all. I believe that I am having a coil problem but wanted to confur with someone who know more than I do.
My first question is, can my car code without any indicator lights coming on? I had my car skip on me and a check engin light come on. I took it into a local mechanic and they coded a misfire on cylinder #7. The mechanic swapped coils #7 and #5 and ran the car again. He was unable to get the car to skip again. We found some wear on the boot running from the coil to the spark plug but nothing significant. Thinking the electrical charge might have found a small hole through the warn rubber and arched, I replaced the boot anyway and did not have anymore problems for about one week. Then the car skipped again just under light power between 2nd, 3rd, and then 4th gear. I got to my destination, the car cooled down and I ran it again. I had no problems until two days later the some thing happend this Saturday. There were no problems yesterday or today. Could this still be a coil problem? Don't coil go bad and stay bad until replaced? And no, I found no moisture in the spark plug hole when the boot was replaced.
Unrelated, I have a problem with my keyless entry. My driver's side door only sometimes locks and unlocks with the remote or button. All the other doors work. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks for the help.
