Occasional engine squealing noise

My 2002 CRV has about 130K miles which I bought last year. Several months ago it started occasionally making a rather loud squeal sound upon starting and it continues for 10 to 15 minutes with the noise getting a bit softer. It does it independent of the weather and of the air temperature, and, as I mentioned, it only does it a few times per month. What could it be and should I be concerned? Thank you!

My first guess would be that some belt is slipping.

Like tidester said before, you are due for maintenance. One of the many items on the "menu" would be to replace the belts.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. I'm looking at at least a cost of $500. I guess I was hoping for a dream answer such as 'nothing to worry about'.

It does not cost $500 to replace just the belt.

However, if you want to avoid having a $3000 repair bill, you should have the maintenance done on time and according to the schedule in the Owner's Manual and the conditions your driving style falls under.

As the saying goes: And ounce of prevention....
