Matrix XRS Vibe GT 6spd transmission problems

Has anyone had any problems with the 6 speed transmission synchronizers going bad? You will know by the grunt sound it will make when shifting from one gear to another.
My personal story is: I bought my 04 XRS and had it for less than a month when I noticed grunting when upshifting or downshifting to certain gears. It was under 60K miles so Toyota replaced the tranny free of charge. After I passed the 60K mile mark and my warranty was over the tranny started doing the same thing again, of course Toyota wouldn't cover it. After 3-4 years now, the 3rd gear has finally completely given up and I am faced with getting another tranny. After speaking with several tranny shops, they all say the same thing, "those transmissions have a poorly designed synchronizer and always go bad."
Anyone else?
