Grinding sound when stopping

I have a 2003 Subaru Legacy with 167k miles. It just starting making a grinding noise on the Front drivers side wheel when stopping. I can break with out the noise, it is only when I come to a complete stop that the noise starts. Any ideas?

I get that a lot when the car sits for any long period of time, especially if it was put away wet. Surface oxidation on the rotors can leave deep pitting and it sounds bad until it wears away. But if it is something new that you have never experienced before, it warrants a visual inspection. It could be as simple as a pebble that got lodged in, or a worn down pad.

I typically find that the first spot to wear out is on the inside pad where it is near impossible to see without pulling off the caliper. Brake issues are not something to be ignored. Get it checked!

Without seeing or hearing it, it could be pads, or more likely on a 2003 it's the sliders or calipers that are frozen or freezing.
