09 Forester 2.5 Premium loosing power
Good Day!
Has anyone experienced temporarily loss of power when overtaking? My 09 seems to loss power for about a second when I overtake and when it comes back engine is in very high rev and very slow to respond and I end up not overtaking. This started around 10K(now at 33K) and has happened 5 times intermittently and a bit scary because it feels like the engine has died.
I have also experienced this when I drive to our local supermarket. The entrance to the parking lot has probably a 5 degree incline and as soon as I am halfway, engine losses power for 1-2 seconds and has a hard time going in.
I have taken the car to the local dealer and they said they could not replicate or find the problem.
Any suggestions? This is a bit concerning because I have a 5 year old passenger and I don't want to get in to an accident.

This may be a slow downshift, and be normal. I have a 2008 LL Bean automatic. When following a car at 60 mph, when I floor the pedal to pass it, nothing happens for a second, then the transmission downshifts from 4th all the way to 2nd, which puts the engine at startlingly high revs, which it can only maintain for a second or two before the increasing speed causes an upshift to 3rd. The hesitation, lost seconds and the short use of 2nd gear seem unpleasant and dangerous.
I am told that passing works better if you take manual control to avoid the downshift to 2nd gear. Pull the shift lever back to 3rd as you begin to floor the pedal, then floor it all the way. There will be an immediate downshift to the more usable 3rd gear, which will then take the car powerfully and smoothly to high speed. The shifter lever is designed to be slipped back and forth between 4th and 3rd.

I think this could be another downshifting hesitation, possibly normal. If I come to a rolling stop as in approaching a right angle turn or a turn into a ramp, the transmission will be caught still fumbling in its downshift as I apply the gas. It feels like a momentary loss of power until the transmission jerks into the lower gear under power.
Or, your engine could have the hesitation, if it has a hard time continuing to climb the incline.
A hesitation in the transmission could be normal and the dealer might not feel it unless they replicate the downshift conditions, in which case they might say it was normal.
A hesitation in the engine is not normal, and you should keep after it.
