column shift problem, out of sync

in Mercury
I have a 98 mercury grand marquis. When I put the car in park, the indicator registers that it is in reverse but it is in park. When I move the shift to neutral, the car goes into reverse etc. The car drives fine. I'm thinking there is a pin loose or something to that effect. How do I get the plastic collar off, so I can take a look?
