Infiniti G37 Transmission Problems

    bobby, tell them to have tgheir Tech check another web site at Infiniti. At first, my Dealer (who is well aware of my persistent complaints about the 7AT), notifed me that my Car did Qualify.....WTF !! I insisted that they try again - call Infiniti of NA - whatever. So On Saturday morning, the Service Advisor, calls me at home and their Tech touched base at Different site (so they told me) and found that I Do Fall Into The Bucket....It was Reflashed and it is a "Cure" for the ailements of the hesitation / lagging/ and abrupt shifting {that was felt on occassions}. Much better coasting - stop n go performance. Not Perfect, but 80% better than what I had. I now have begun to Look Forward to the Drive home to enjoy the car....
  • ITB12-027 was just released for '09. I now have a G37 with smooth down shifts and a drastic decrease in lag.

    In addition to smooth down shifting, I now see 27.8 mpg. Was 26 mpg prior.

    However, I just called 2 different infiniti dealerships and they are both saying that my tranny TCM and ECM are excluded until they come up with an update for mine...this sucks so bad!! the service manager said they ONLY have one site they can go on. NO different sites other than infiniti NA...
    My ECM is "1NY2B" and TCM is "359E". Does that match yours by any chance??

    I'm looking to buy a 2009 Infiniti G37X with 25k miles. I've driven it twice and noticed the downshifting issues and upshift problems discussed in this thread. Unfortunately it's a Toyota dealership that has the car for sale. The car is in like new condition and reasonably priced so is it worth taking the risk of buying the vehicle and then taking it an Infiniti dealership for the software update? How certain is this software upgrade going to fix the transmission hesitation issue? Thanks!

    I would get VIN and call Infiniti to ask if update applies. If so, I and others are positive on the performance change. That's all I would need to proceed
  • OMGosh, you guys (yankee speak for male and female) have given me HOPE! My hubby is watching Formula One race and he mentioned that Infiniti makes Formula 1 engines, and I said "I hope they make better racing engines than they do 7-speed transmissions" and he said to go take my car and get rid of it or quit complaining (not his exact word) about it." LOL. So I thought I hadn't been to this forum for several months and I would check it out, not expecting a thing after all the earlier unfulfilled promises! I can hardly wait to call my dealer tomorrow morning and make an appointment (unfortunately first date I'm in town and have free time probably won't be until 2nd week of August). But I"ll report back after I have it done. I have 2011 G37 coupe with less than 10,000 miles on it, purchased 5/30/11. Fortunate that the hesitation when accelerating from 22 mph hasn't gotten me killed yet.

    Got the update on my '10 G37x about two weeks ago. Transmission really smoothed out, but not as nice as the '12 G37x loaner I drove however. The '12 was a smooth as glass. Still experiencing damn flaring from time to time. Quite frustrating. Maybe my expectations were too high.
  • i've been griping and griping and this forum has really been wonderful. I finally had the ITB-12-027 fix installed about two weeks ago and it has made a HUGE difference in the transmission in my 2011 G35. BUT I am still angry and disappointed with Infiniti and their dealerships. I have had my car in to two different dealerships specifically with the transmission complaint, and each time I have taken it for oil change, I make them note the transmission complaint on the service order, I have called Infiniti customer service, but NO ONE reached out to me about this TSB. So I am not at all sure that my next car will be an Infiniti, sadly. And I have driven Infiniti since 2001. It must be nice to be so successful that you don't care about customer retention.

  • :mad: Another disgruntled Infinity owner's story: I bought my 2009 infiniti with 19,000 miles in March of 2011 from an Infiniti dealer as a "certified pre-owned" vehicle. Luckily, I purchased the additional warranty (100K Miles). I had the car in the shop 7-8 times in the 18 months I owned it, most of the visits related to the transmission. There was clearly something wrong with it, but the delaership refused to acknowledge it. They would tell me "it is supposed to ride rough, it is a sports car" or that they could not duplicate the problem. I almost slammed my face into the wind shield a number of times becuase it would abruptly shift down 3-4 gears at once after coasting along on the highway, then hitting the gas. When accelerating, it would sometimes just not shift for a while, then shift up a few gears at once, snapping my neck backwards. I kept insisting that THIS CAR IS DANGEROUS AND SHOULD NOT BE ON THE ROADS! Nobody at the dealership would listen, so at 86K miles I finally traded it in at the Toyota dealership across the street and will never even consider owning another Infiniti. I lost my shirt on this car, but I need to keep my family safe and I am sick of being told I don't know what I am talking about. Good riddance! I am telling everyone I know to please stay away from these dangerous cars and the dealerships that defend their horrible product.

  • Infiniti is definitely in denial about this entire issue. The software/firmware upgrade did pretty much fix my transmission issues, but I will not buy another Infiniti (we currently have two and I have driven an Infiniti since 2001). It is very angering to have them make customers feel like they are wrong or don't know what they are talking about. And then when the fix is available, they do not reach out proactively. Bad, bad, bad business model.
  • I have a 2012 G37 and have had problems with the transmission. It has been behaving erratically ever since I purchased the car new 1 year ago. Numerous trips to the dealership got me nothing. The service department knows about this and refuses to take a proactive approach to the issue. They do indeed make many excuses about this problem in an attempt undermine you into feeling/believing you are wrong. If they cannot address this issue properly, I would advise to stay away from the Infiniti brand.
  • I am so saddened that this continues to be the modus operandi of Infinit. It is very disheartening. I do not know what car to buy next. I thought Lexus, but I prefer the sportier drive/ride of the Infinit. I don't like BMWs because parts are hard to get and car is in shop for extended periods of time (even tho they give you a loaner, I want MY ar not a loaner)...any suggestions out there?

    I happily and relievedly turned in my POS 37xS and leased a 2013 Audi A6 with the small engine. Not a rocket, but it gets me where I'm going fast enough with much more style and much less agita. An incredibly better drive and much more sophisticated bells and whistles. Mine came in pretty loaded in the upper 40s. Higher than the G, but you get what you pay for. A much better value than the BMWs, and much less stodgy than Lexus. Do you really like the style and drive of the Infiniti (and I'm including all models) to put up with that crappy transmission and all their corporate/service nonsense? For me, that was a no-brainer.   • If you still have transmission problems and your dealership is not fixing it free, you should get Infiniti Consumer Affairs involved. Their contact phone is on the "Contact Us" page of the Infiniti web site - at the bottom. First, call your dealership and tell them you want the software fix for the transmission hesitation that Infiniti has released around a year ago. If they say they don't have it, then call Consumer Affairs. They'll take your VIN and verify there is a fix. Tell them your dealership says they don't have the fix and ask them to make the arrangements with the dealership to get the fix done for you. They will do this for you - they did it for me. Since the software fix, my car is totally different - the way I expected it to be when I drove it off the lot. For the record, I have a 2011 G37S sedan. For anyone having this problem, follow through with Consumer Affairs and it will be fixed.
  • i have been reading all the posts here re: the transmission shifting issue and it seems to be just that; an issue with finding the correct gears because there are so many and the car hunts for a gear (like auto focus cameras hunt for an object or line to focus on!) BUT i have not read anywhere in these posts where the tranny actually failed or had to be replaced. Thats why the dealers keep saying nothing is wrong. It was designed that way, a poor design, but nonetheless it works as intended. I think in time, all those issues will be improved and the mileage will be achieved, and the shifts smooth with little or no hesitation. We have to remember that whenever a "new" concept or "breakthrough" comes out it takes a few years to get it working properly, same with cameras and other tech items that use PC heavily. I am looking to buy an 09-10 g37X and hopefully all will be well, as i know about the tranny and dont consider it a real problem. My 08 charger thunks when you drive it at a pace that hasnt been done in a few hundred miles. Same problem, the tranny is getting the driving pattern, although its only a 4 or 5 speed the same thing occurs. And other mfgs. have multi speed trannys and i bet the same thing happens (how do you say Chrysler 300 8 speed tranny with 34MPG!) So lets take the tranny issue with a grain of salt, and hope things improve.
  • I hope that many who have experienced this issue respond to this writer who is OBVIOUSLY a dealer or an Infiniti employee. When you fear that you are going to get hit because the car hesitates when, say, making a left turn during a sufficient gap in oncoming traffic, then there is a problem. Furthermore the firmware or software fix did seem to fix the problem. NO car, whether a $15,000 car or a $40,000 car should have this issue and have it totally ignored by the manufacturer. It is more than likely my last Infiniti (having owned Infinitis since 2001). To have a problem and face up to it is one thing, but to have a problem and stick your head in the sand is another.
  • Please excuse me, i am not an Infiniti employee or a dealer, i don't have that kind of money!! i don't mean to belittle the problem or the owners that have experienced the problems. Believe me, i experienced problems with my (albeit less expensive but none the less annoying) 08 dodge charger and those problems either cost me $$ or dealer time to fix. All i am saying is that the inherent problem, as far as i have read here and other blogs (and i plan to read more) has not resulted in failure or replacement as of now. Because of these blogs i know what to expect. You bought new and didnt expect this condition. I know a former co-employee that had a pre 09 5 speed tranny that had to be replaced but i don't know the circumstances. i hope to get a good 09-10 and i will check as much as possible to see if the update has been done and it if bucks and lags i will get the update and used the techniques prescribed here to re-learn the tranny. I have owned 3 Pathfinders and one Sentra and put over 100K on each. I think the reliability is good. In spite of this problem i still think it is one of the best values around, and it should make a great used car! Good luck all!

    I wish you luck, but buying a vehicle with a known defect, particularly in vehicle years where the problem was most acute, does not seem sensible. Are there no other vehicles you could consider? As for the software fix, my experience, and from reading the experience of others, is that this was not a universal fix. I happily returned by 2009 G37 at the end of the lease, after two years of ducking and weaving and BS from Infiniti on this issue. It was so frustrating! I will NEVER buy another Infiniti. I mention all this to suggest that you consider your other options, and not get locked into a choice where there is a reasonable likelihood of driving quality and safety issues. Again, good luck!

    I too wish you luck too! The day you are breaking in a slowing down lane and need to move to the fast line quickly, and the car stalls for a split second and your heart drops to your knees - you will regret it. This happened to me just a few days ago and I am 6 months off from finishing my 3 year lease.
  • thank you both for your concern, i really appreciate it. I don't consider it a defect; a defect is something that needs repair or a recall. Maybe the condition warrants a recall. All cars have "conditions" like the Hondas that were just recalled for faulty or defective rear brakes on their vans and SUV's. My first choice was m35x 5 speed but we decided we don't need a car that big as it will be a 2nd car to the charger. i would gladly get a 2008 g35x with a 5 spd. if I could find one with low miles. Audis are too expensive, BMW's too and smaller with reliability issues. In Buffalo, NY AWD is a welcome option and this option list fits the bill. I think the best way to weed out one with the condition is in a long test drive simulating all the conditions you would encounter in your normal driving. I am not rushing into it, nor am i going in starry eyed. I wont buy one until i find one that meets the standards i am looking for, and does not seem to exhibit the problem. If i cant find one i will wait. Again thanks for your concern and advice and to all you Infiniti drivers with the problem good luck and safe driving to you all!

    Perhaps "defect" is a matter of semantics. I actually think it's a defect, as I have never had a car drive the way my old G37 did. Also, it did need several software fixes, so that supports defect.

    No matter. You seem to have gone down the same list I did. I have owned many Audis, and that's what I currently have. It really drives great so perhaps reconsider (I know they can be a expensive perhaps a 08 or 09 A4?).

    The long test drive may not help you. This problem just cropped up. And are there really that many you can test drive? I guess you really want a G37...

    So FWIW I hope you pick something else. I also drove the Hyundai Sonata and thought it was a hell of a good car. Not sure if they offer AWD but if they do, seriously consider.

  • thanks again for the advice. Yeah lets not get into semantics; i guess anytime you have to take your car back to the dealer to get something done/improved it can be considered a defect... whatever i plan to buy, car, suv, etc. i will test drive it long and hard. My wife is the "soft" driver and she will test it too. The new Altimas are interesting but not AWD but FWD i think and they can be tricky here in deep snow. Most automakers that have a premium line, only have AWD in that line; e.g. Nissan Maxima is FWD to get AWD you have to to to the Infiniti. It seems no matter what you buy that's of late models it will have the multi speed transmissions for mileage. I wonder how the Chrysler with 8 speeds are doing? i will check that forum soon. I am not stuck on the G bu considered it a real value for options and reliability as well as sportiness. As i mentioned before, owned multiple Nissans and had great luck with all of them. I will look at the Audi prices this weekend but i think to be a second car with 25-34K miles they will be too expensive. I will definitely keep you posted! thanks again!
  • i went to my Charger forum; i have an 08 as our main car and did a quick search on Chryslers new 8 speed auto tranny. Sounds like the same problems you guys/ladies are experiencing. (SEE LINK BELOW) The clunk mentioned is also on my car but only if the car is driven differently from the last time you drove. E.G. spirited driving will produce the clunk once or twice as the ECM learns whats going on. As i mentioned before i expect this problem to be widespread across manufacturers as they adapt to new standards using multi speed trannys for mileage gains. Until the technology catches up with the growing pains of these new designs this is going to be around at least for ahwile until they figure it out. BTW i talked to a new 2013 37x owner at the golf range the other day. He had not experienced the problem in his new car. He has owned it for a couple months though and he said its smooth and fast in traffic with no lag. Either his car doesn't have it or they have improved it on the new models. I'll keep checking.

    Hello all,
    I purchased an new 2007 C230 Sport with the 7speed auto transmission. I have an issue and wondered if any one experienced it.. This is a new car with 1k miles, so i will be taking it tomorrow for the 1K suggested diagnotic service. My issue is that in "S" mode, which is standard mode, I slow the car down to a stop and when the car is stopped at a traffic light, it lunges forward, almost feels like is still in gear and dropping to the start gear ? any ideas ? The service tech thinks its a program glitch and might need to have anew program downloaded. It doesn't happen on "C" mode.

    I'm ready to purchase a new car and have been seriously considering the 2013 G37x. Is this the same transmission as those having trouble from 2009-2012? I've been driving an I30t for 15 years and love it, thus went to Infiniti first. Now, I'm concerned...

    As far as I know, there have been no major changes since 2009 on the G37X. A friend of mine had a 2009 G37 2-door coupe (NOT AWD) which had a 6-speed transmission that seems to be trouble free. Based on my experience with the G37X's 7-speed transmission, my advice is "stay away." If you can deal with 2WD and 2 doors, consider the coupe. Too bad, I love everything else about the G37X, but the transmission needs to work! A couple of my co-workers have Mercedes C300 and C350 4MATIC's and love them. No issues with those, as far as I know, and the price is not as bad as you might think. Best of luck!

  • i have only talked to later model owners who said they dont have a tranny shift problem so i suspect its been worked on and improved in the later models. Good luck?
