2003 VW Jetta Shifting issues

I bought a 2003 Jetta yesterday. When I test drove it everything seemed fine. Finalized the sale and drove it off the lot. About ten miles down the road going 60 mph, it was surging up in the 5-6000 rpm range. Decided to go back and realize that when I took off, it wouldn't switch into second gear until about 4000 rpms. and then going 40 mph, it was running at 3000. This is an automatic with 85000 miles on it. Its at the dealership right now getting looked at, but I want to see if anyone on here knows what the issue could be.

Most auto trannys made and put in cars between 1999 to 2003, have the weak and problematic 01M . Many VW gurus who work on them swear they all fail before 100,000 miles.
My 2003 Jetta TDI wagon Automatic failed at 103,000 miles. Spent $4000 rebuilding it.
Always get the 5 spd manual if you can. With that said, These cars are great, specially if you get the TDI diesel.
