funny. My 2013 with the 2.5L 5 Cyl motor is averaging 29.7 over the 18,000 miles I've had it.

The motor may not be the most refined, but when I go on 100% freeway trips I average between 36MPG at 80MPH or 39MPG at 65 MPH

The downside of turbo's, pressing the go fast pedal makes the economy sink fast.

I have an 08 Rabbit with the same engine (and manual 5 speed) but I get about 30 freeway and 20 city. Do you have the auto? If so, that makes a lot of sense. I've always wondered how much better mileage that extra gear allows for. In any event, I've never seen anything below 20 mpg, even in all city driving, so the 1.8 turbo isn't looking quite as good as I expected.

all the automotive mags talk poorly about the old 2.5 engine but I rented a Jetta with it and absolutely flogged the car around San Francisco with lots of full throttle starts on the hills to zip past double parked cars for around an hour (yeah I got lost a few times) and a solid run at about 80 on the freeway back home and it did over 30 mpg on that.

I have to admit, don't have LA-level traffic in Phoenix but not far off, and the worst my 2.0 TSI has done is maybe 21.5. Avg. is closer to 26.5

The final mpg figures on the 2012 Camry was lower than this, and that car was approximately the same size and weight, and it's direct competition for the Passat, but way less powerful and much slower. I would be cautious about repeating the turbos-suck-gas meme. This has been a low month for the TSI, but as Edmunds has stated elsewhere, "2.5 mpg or so below is actually pretty typical for one of our long-term cars." This Passat is running 2.1 mpg low.

My Optima Hybrid is averaging 37 mpg in combined driving, and gets well over 40 on the highway. I don't think I could go back to a car like this.

Just checked yesterday after only 1500 miles, my Passat TSI 1.8 T was getting 20.6 MPG driving in town. I like a few extra G's when I accelerate and use the S (Sport) transmission setting all the time. I like the engine, but I am still getting used to the hesitation between first and second gear.
