2007 Grand Prix- Key won't go into ignition

My son forcebly removed the key from the ignition of his car when it would not come out. I have seen many posts on the solenoid not releasing the key, but I amm wondering if now the ignition switch is damaged, because I cannot insert the key to trouble shoot the problem.

If the solenoid does not relaeas they key, can it be forced out? if not, then I know it is just the ignition switch.

Any help would really be appreciated!
