OK.....chalk this one up to “I think I’m smarter than I really am”.

Several months ago, my fridge went on the brink. Fix or kick it out the door was my decision. I decided on a new one, given the old one needed an expensive part (compressor), but really wasn’t that old.

Now, it’s the dishwasher’s turn. I bought it 8 years ago, and at the time, was one of the best I could find....Kitchenaid, all stainless, touch panel controls. Not cheap (I think $800 at the time).

Fast forward to today, the touch panel is getting glitchy. Called Kitchenaid support (there’s irony in that statement). They said to clean the touch panel with 50-50 mix of vinegar and water. Done....5 times. Still no help.

Finally, thinking I am not going to eat the cost of a new dishwasher, I call a repair service.....$189 flat fee for any problem, plus parts. OK.....new touch panel is around $200 + $189 = $389. Yowza. Repair guy tells me this particular touch panel for Kitchenaid dishwashers (and presumably for any dishwasher by Whirlpool that uses it) has been problematic and I probably will be replacing it again in a few years. Harrumph.

I decide, after looking at YouTube videos, I can do this myself. Two screws to remove the top of the dishwasher to get to the touch panel. 8 more srews to remove the front stainless panel to get to the “plug” for the touch panel. Easy-peezy!

Not so fast. Removed the front panel and it’s clear there’s more to the problem than just the touch panel. There’s corrosion around the connector.. I take out the touchpad, clean the corrosion with baking soda and water, put it back together. Now, it doesn’t work at all. And, I have no idea what caused the corrosion.

Long and short of this, I’m tired of fooling with it. I could spend $400 to have a pro do it, but I still am faced with a panel that will probably fail sooner than later.

OK, new one is what I’m looking for. Lowes and Best Buy are offering free installation on their Bosch dishwashers. I’m not doing Kitchenaid, again.

Who out there knows anything about the reliability and performance of Bosch Dishwashers. Consumer reports likes them, but the end user reviews about them aren’t inspiring.

we replaced KA with 800 series bosch last month; 40dB quiet is new bosch so huge difference. wifey wanted fancy 3rd rack so went with 800 series vs 500. no issues so far; got it at local appliance store as ~$50 more than Best bye and the local store repair depart is excellent... if you want to spend >$1500 on a DW would get a Miele-- all German; bosch is German designed with most parts /assembly in US ...there is a car analogy there....
Thanks for the first hand experience. Don't think I want to drop $1,500, or even $1,000 on a dishwasher. I'll look at the model you suggested. I hear the Bosch's don't dry very well. What is you experience?

I walk into an appliance store and see rows of boxes which mostly look identical. How old was your KA?
GG, we have had 4 Bosch dishwashers...not because they wore out, but because the one's in our home had warn out (non were Bosch)

They are incredibly good, very quiet, work efficiently, yes they dry completely. We get the approximately $600 model and I don't know why someone would want anything better.

Bosch gets it right, the way you load the dishes, and the way it cleans. We did a lot of research....buy it before tariffs are put on them.

You have probably heard me say this in here before. I NEVER leave a lot that has touched my wheels, like a PA inspection station or tire place without checking all 5 lug nuts on all 4 wheels. I have found lug nuts over tightened a couple of times and marched back into the desk at tire shops and complained. One time the guy said something like, "why are you checking them. Do you have a torque wrench or what"? My response was, "no I don't have a torque wrench and I don't think you guys have one either".

    jmonroe

Okay, I'll bite. Exactly how do you check the torque on a lug nut without a torque wrench?

Granted, it's easy to see if they left off any of the lug nuts. But checking the torque? Do you take your lug wrench, loosen, and re-tighten?

I could use that method to tell if they were really loose, or way too tight, but anything in between ...

Yes, that is exactly what I do. Loosen then tighten. What I do is plenty good enough until I get home to do the real torque setting. I've thought about carrying around a torque wrench but I'm so good I don't need one.

You know, there was a time I didn't have a torque wrench and I never had a problem going by feel. Plus or minus a pound or two is pretty good as far as I'm concerned. No wheel vibration, no flying wheels or rim damage.

I'd be willing to bet that most of the cars on the road today don't have wheels tightened as well as my feel method. I know it's not exact but I trust myself more than a so-called pro.

Update: Dealer is not denying fault so far and they're agreeing to pay for all damage. For the time being I'm going to leave the specifics of who/what/where/brand etc.

It shouldn't happen, but it can and does seem to happen fairly often. It just takes a moments inattention, and the mechanic forgets to tighten the lug nuts.
At least the dealer is admitting to it, as they should....it is the only logical conclusion.

Well, the plumber just left and I have a new outside spigot.
He told me what went wrong on the old one.
You have to disconnect the hose when it is cold so the water doesn't stay in the faucet and freeze.
I'm pretty about emptying the hose after using it, but I am not the only user.
We had a great time talking about the Yankees, looking at pictures, etc...
We are the same age and it turns out his bother went to the same college as I did, he would go up to visit.
We knew about many of the same places and even some of the same people.
After he left, I remembered where my yearbook was and started poking through it.
I sent him the college senior picture of one of his high school buddies who graduated the same time I did.
No I did not want him to see the truck. I think I got a discount based on what others I talked to said he charges.

Sorry I didn't respond to your earlier post. Best thing is to have a new Frost Free SillCock (Spigot) installed by the plumber with a shut off valve on the inside of the house. In the winter, make sure the valve inside is closed and the Hose Cock outside remains open. It is also important to MAKE sure that the hose cock is installed pitched away from your house and not STRAIGHT through the wall.

    @nyccarguy,
I also had a frost free prior to the new one.
He said water backed up in the hose probably didn't drain out and that's what caused it to go bad when it got cold.
There is an inside shutoff, but there was so much junk(saved old stuff) around it, it couldn't be reached.
He put a pitch on the new one, said the old one had no drain angle.
Actually, his assistant did all the work while he and I just BS'ed. :)

@iluvmysephia1, I still have my original choppers. Even after a couple rounds with Mrs. j over the years. They've been tested but I still have them.

I attribute some of my tooth health to an uncle who was a dentist (fathers oldest brother). He lived in New Castle PA not too far from the Burgh and every time he came to visit he'd say, "open up, let me see your teeth". Got an exam right there in the living room and so did my 2 brothers.

I remember he always said to lay off the candy but that wasn't really a problem for me. My mother even agreed and said, "but he sure eats a lot of potato chips". To which he said, "let him eat all the potato chips and pretzels he wants. It's good for tartar control". Of course this was before we knew the bad effects of the fat.

So today when I open up a bag of chips, Mrs. j says, "you know those things aren't good for you. So do yourself a favor and go easy on them, OK". I keep telling her it's good tartar control but she doesn't hear a word I say. Just like with everything else I say. :'(

I missed the original problem but, when we head south for the winter we turn off the tap from the inside of the house, then let it drain outside. All hoses are off.

We asked our very honest plumber about installing frost free outdoor faucets - we have 3. He advised us against it because he said they break easily and it can get expensive repairing.

I figured if he is willing to talk himself out of a job he could have had, it must make some sense.

Speaking of hoses. In the last few years I have bought a couple of those wrinkled green light weight hoses that are very light and compact, expand when in use and shrink up after the water drains out. They worked great and are very handy, but not very durable. I just bought a new one that I really like. No longer wrinkled up and green but black, with the cover being like a bungee cord and no wrinkles. This one really works great. 25 ft. long and expands up to 50 ft. in use. No I don't own or work for the company.

I think NYC nailed it, remove the hose and the faucet needs a down angle to drain the water.

I bought a couple of those! Love them! Only caveat is that they are a bit narrow in diameter if you want a really powerful discharge.

I have one outside my garage. We found out after we moved in that the pipe running through the garage cracked, likely from remaining filled with water, even after shutting off the valve in the basement, and freezing. I'll get around to replacing it one of these days.

    Folks,

I need some car expertise here - I'll share the whole story after I hear your thoughts (I'm looking at you @jmonroe and @qbrozen).

Person picks up a nail in the tire of their SUV. Dealer patches it temporarily, but tells person that it won't last and they need to replace the tire. No problem - person orders tire and picks it up at Tire Rack distribution center and then takes it to a local dealer for the vehicle brand and has it installed. About 50 miles later on the way home, vehicle starts shaking violently and is so unstable person pulls over. Vehicle is flatbed to the person's preferred and local dealership.

On arrival, is informed that 4 of 5 lugs are missing, the wheel, tire, hub, front brakes, and front suspension are trashed and that person is lucky the wheel didn't fly off the car.

I'm thinking the lugs weren't properly torqued and vibrated right out. What am I missing?

Has the vehicle owner gone back to the installing shop yet? This is all on them. He/she should have had it towed there immediately.

By the way, the patch story was BS to begin with.

What's with Samsung? There is ***ONE*** guy in this entire area that will work on them yet they are sold in large qualities around here. We have a Samsung 50 inch Television that is approaching five years old that has been flawless. There must be some reason for this? When I asked our local reapair guy who is in high demand around here about a recommendation for a new refrigerator, he just said "Don't buy Samsung" We seemed reluctant to discuss his reasoning.

Samsung makes good TVs...they are among the very best.
Appliances are a crap shoot, some are excellent, some are problem plagued, and it seems they don't have a very good service network.
People have had lots of problems with refrigerators.
I always buy Samsung TVs....I like their appliances, but too risky to buy from the reports I have seen.
GO TO 5 Minute Mark CBC Marketplace (CBC Canadian Broadcasting Corp.)

*Also there were dryers that caught on fire.
On Marketplace the repairman says most appliance companies just ignore you these days. My theory is these companies only worry about the bottom line, each quarter, to save their own jobs.

Appliances are a difficult buy decision due to their inconsistent reliability.  What I mean by the above statement is that buyer’s experiences with the same brand are as varied as air pressure in the four tires on your car in summer.  Some buyers have flawless experiences with a brand of refrigerators while others are disgusted with that same brand.

No different from experiences with cars of the same make and model.

GE used to be a top pick for washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, etc.  Not any more.  Whirlpool appliances seem to have acquired a top pick brand recently.  I purchased a 22 cu ft fridge by Whirlpool 4 years ago and it is outstanding - especially for economical operation.

When I went out shopping for my 55” 4K HD TV last year, I ended up with Vizio due to several factors.  Their customer service is outstanding; their products are manufactured in the US; pricing was excellent; good ratings for their product line; highly adaptable to a multitude of inputs, to name a few.

I have had the TV for about a year now and it functions flawlessly.  I even bought their 4 foot sound board that reproduces outanding tones.

Most posters here would probably say the same about their appliance purchases - reliable and of high quality with just a few exceptions.  I am going to need a new stackable washer/dryer combo for my condo.  The one I have now is 28 years old and still runs flawlessly - a GE product from 1990 when GE was a great product.  I have been looking at Whirlpool because of my experiences with their product and the fact that only GE and Whirlpool make a combo that fits in the limited closet space I have.

So, won’t bore you with details, but ended up with a Bosch dishwasher. Don’t know the model. It was an “open box” I found at a local appliance store (Reker and Boerger). Best I can tell, there are no blemishes. Originally sells for $800. I got it for $580. Thanks for the first hand experience comments....very helpful.

Samsung....they make great TVs. Appliances, as was mentioned, a crap shoot.

Their dishwashers are rated at the bottom of the heap for reliability by CR. I had a fridge made by Samsung that lasted all of 5 years before needing a compressor, and had numerous other issues during my ownership. Bottom line, I’ll stay away from their appliances.

Whirlpool has bought up a bunch of brands....Maytag, Amana, Termador, Kitchenaid, Jenn-Air, Estate and a bunch of foreign brands. I think they make some Kenmore appliances, too. Who knows what’s going on with Sears and Kenmore these days, though. The nearest appliance store has just closed. I have no idea where to go to even buy Kenmore anything.

Electrolux bought GE. I think most of their appliances are still made in KY. But, Electrolux doesn’t have that good of a rep for reliability, either.

Looked at LG at Best Buy. Not bad, but a bit pricey.

I shopped Lowes, Best Buy, Home Depot, and my local appliance store. I can say up front, Lowes and Home Depot aren’t doing themselves any favors. I tried to get availability and installation info from both.

Home Depot doesn’t carry Bosch. Probably not a good move on their part given how popular the brand is for dishwashers. The sales person told me all Bosch dishwashers were being recalled. Researched it. Some are....mostly older ones, and the rest of the brands that use a certain electrical cord needed to have it replaced.

Lowes makes you jump through all sorts of hoops. They offered free installation on Bosch dishwashers, but you have to pay them to install it first and then apply for a gift card to receive the install amount refunded. Stop it, already.

Best Buy....surprisingly helpful. Apparently, the store I shopped at has a dept called Paific Kitchen and Home. Sales person was quite knowledgeable. They had a very wide range of brands and models.

I wanted to support the local store I bought from, plus they made me a deal on the open box.

Let’s see how their installer does.

I actually got a real education on the applicance industry shopping for the dishwasher.

You were pretty thorough so I hope it works out. I also had a very good experience with Best Buy — a surprise to me. We got our Bosch from them and also our Samsung TV. There was a recall of some Bosch models, but ours wasn’t one of them.
We have a Samsung fridge — they are the only ones making counter depth for small kitchens. Three years in, it’s fine. Went with LG for the range and microwave. Installation prices vary widely by store and even by appliance, so some our purchases were made on that basis, all other factors being equal. Home Depot had a big sale and free install when we got the fridge and range, so we got those there. Sears had the highest install prices of any of them.
In Ohio we had an excellent local appliance store where I always bought appliances. In our new place they are just not competitive and don’t seem to care. Free local install would seem a big draw if your prices are higher, but that’s not the case here.

Funny thing about Best Buy; in my experiences they are better support in appliances than electronics. Go figure.

I got the Geek Squad system for the TV and they’ve been pretty helpful.

I also paid for the Geek Squad extended service for 3 additional years over and above the 1-year warranty from Vizio.  Bought the TV at BestBuy also.

Our Bosch dishwaher died after12 years or so. We went with a mid-grade KitchenAid and so far three years in we really like it.

12 years is pretty good for a dishwasher these days.

Mike, Our 50 inch Vizio lasted 3 years before the Netflix/Amazon apps failed. Customer service was a nightmare....long waits, long process to test that had to be done each time. Got different reasons for the failure....most were lies like it was the cable company's fault...it wasn't.

Many companies claim to make their TVs in the U.S. Some do make certain models in the U.S., but not all models, and some "assemble" them in the US, so they can say they are made in the US.

    And then this quote:
A second more minor issue exists with the company's claims as "America's TV Company" while stating in a recent PR release, "surpassing all foreign TV brands." This comment may confuse people to believe that Vizio TVs are Made in America while all other TV company's are intruding "foreign brands." While it's true Vizio's headquarters is located in Irvine, CA, the XVT472SV we just tested clearly states, "MADE IN CHINA" on the back of the TV.
    VIZIO MAKES MISLEADING CLAIMS

I know other people love their VIZIO TV. I think their marketing plan is to not spend money on marketing, and that keeps the price low.

Our 14 year-old Pomeranian passed away from respiratory issues. I prayed to God that he just go - he was panting heavy for a day and a half. Our vet wanted to try and settle an infection with antibiotics and sold me some yesterday to give him. Trouble was, he was panting so heavily and the antibiotic was horse-pill sized!

I got down right by him on the carpet and told him he was a great dog. He was an answer to a prayer for another Pomeranian after our first Pom died in June of 2004. Very loyal, loving dog. Cotey's the Pom on the right in this picture.

@iluvmysephia1 you have my deepest sympathies for your loss. I have always had dogs, and I tell everyone their biggest drawback is that they don't live long enough. My 9 year old yellow lab (the one in my avatar) has lymphoma, and I'm dealing with chemo right now.

So, on appliances. We have some LG and some Samsung. Both fine so far.

On our KA dishwasher, pulled the rack out, did some internet research, and ordered a KA OEM top rack rebuild kit. Includes part I need, and every other component for both sides. Actually an updated design since the original pieces were not very durable. Metal instead of plastic. So his weekends project is to strip the old stuff off, and get the new brackets on. Should not be too difficult. I hope. At least no electronics involved.

The problem with that is, I am a "better geek" than anyone who has ever worked at Best Buy. I don't claim to know appliances, but computers, smart TVs, home theater systems, I've got it covered.

I will admit to not being great with cell phones. With my big fingers, I have to use one of the pointing sticks, and with my old eyes, I have to get out the really strong magnifying glasses, all of which makes the experience painful. Add in my antipathy for anything Apple, and cell phones are just not my cup of tea, surprising for a self admitted geek.

My present home theater receiver, an Onkyo 626, was a craigslist purchase for next to nothing. The setting for "lipsync" had been messed up, rendering it useless for watching TV. That setting was buried so deep in the menus it took me nearly an hour to find and fix, but I persevered. A lot of this, computers, smart TVs, cell phones, etc, is a matter of perseverance.

The whole subject of appliances, and appliance repair, is a different ball game. When I was a kid, the ability to "fix things" was a valued skill. Now we seem to live in a disposable world, and no one fixes anything.

@iluvmysephia1 - so very sorry for your loss. I've got a 14 year old dachshund and she's starting to show signs of her age.

@iluvmysephia1 Very sorry to hear this iluv. 14 is probably a good average life for Cotey. Losing a pet is like losing family. Cotey had the best life possible I would imagine.

Gigi is 14 too. Smaller dogs tend to live longer.....hoping for her to last to 20, but you never know. Our smallish poodle Coco got cancer of the mouth at 14 and had to be put down.
