Landed in Iceland today. Well, not today anymore. Yesterday morn around 4am local time. Major jetlag happening. It is now almost 1am on Friday… I think.

Anyway, got stuck with a diesel Nissan Xtrail (Rogue) with 157k km. Lots of warning lights on the dash. A real POS. But at least it has studded winter tires. And it seems to be doing well on fuel so far. You can shift it to FWD which I don’t believe you can do with US models, right?

We are staying in the Hella area. If anybody happens to have any suggestions or tips for a family of 4 on vacation, please feel free to share. All I know so far is that everything is crazy expensive

I don't want to think about ice and parkas. I finally got brave and put the snow blower back into the shed to get it out of the garage.

went to the store earlier, and was excited to see that the gray ice/slush/snow mountain in the corner was down to only about 2' high!

    Happy Good Friday Everyone:
    Itès been a bit slow, so here is a Dennis OSullivan article...he supports the dealer but with good reason I think;
    QUESTION

Hello Dennis. I hope that you can help me with a car problem. I purchased a car from a local used car dealer. One week after I drove it off the lot, the front wheel fell off while I was in Toronto. I had it fixed at a garage just down the street from where I work. The total bill including a new tire was over six hundred dollars. I had called the used car dealer before I had the repairs done and they told me to bring them the bill for the repairs and they would consider paying for some of the repairs. I have since presented them with the bill and as of this date, they have not responded. I have threatened legal action but that did not seem to frighten them. I also contacted the garage that had done the safety and threatened to go to the Ministry. Would you call them for me and see if you can get anywhere with them? Needless to say, I will never buy another car from them. I intend to let all my friends know of these crooks if they do not help.

    Thanks, Danny from Burlington

    ANSWER

I did contact the used car dealer for you and asked to see the invoice for the repairs that were done in Toronto since you did not respond to my request for the invoice. While waiting for the invoice to be e-mailed to me, I contacted the garage in Toronto about the repairs to your vehicle and asked for an original copy of the invoice. They did confirm for me that the car was towed in with front-end damage. The invoice from the garage in Toronto states: “repair to front left wheel as a result of pot hole damage”. You never mentioned to me about pothole damage to your car in your email. They also told me that they gave you a letter in writing to take to the city of Toronto for compensation. When the used car dealer sent me their copy of the invoice, I noticed that their invoice was different than the one emailed to me by the garage in Toronto. The invoice that you gave to the used car dealer read: “Replace right worn out ball joint”

I again called the garage in Toronto to ask why the two separate bills and was told by the front desk person that that is what you had asked for. I am not going to accuse you of trying to double bill for the repairs but after talking to your (MECHANIC FRIEND) in the Toronto garage, he did tell me that that was your intention. After a couple of tries, I finally reached the owner of the garage in Toronto and confronted him with the fact that one of his employees was suspect in a scam attempt and needless to say, he was not happy. Do you realize that you almost cost your friend his job and if technicians were not in such demand, he would have lost his job? I get many emails every week asking for help but I can only do two or three columns a week. It is unfortunate that I wasted so much time with your dishonest attempt to double bill and be mindful of who you call crook!

POSSIBLY it is entirely my fault. I thought the name was funny and at least memorable enough I would recall it easily: SADcars

The worst part of it is the wife’s constant: “what’s that noise? Why is it doing that? We’re going to get stranded.”

I've got no suggestions as we've never been, but enjoy the trip! We depart Nashville tomorrow after spending the last 4 days here, an impromptu trip that we all needed. It's supposed to warm up to the 70s by Sunday so it figures.

If the MECHANIC FRIEND took part in providing the used car dealer a bill that would allow Danny boy to double dip for repairs, why wasn’t the tech fired? The way O’Sullivan explained it was being a car tech these days allows you to do anything you want because, even though you do something shady, there aren’t enough techs out there to replace you. So, you don’t lose your job. Nice work if you can get it.

Well, my twin brother did it again! He traded his 2022 Mercedes GLE for a 2023 AMG GLE 53. It’s Selenite Gray Metallic with black AMG 22” wheels. MSRP was $92,000 which is what most dealers sell them for. This one was built in Germany because it’s an AMG. It’s got 429 hp. The only option it doesn’t have is Distronic Driver Assistance (autonomous cruise control).

From what he told me, the dealer gave him $76,000 for his trade (7500 miles on the odometer). I asked him why would he get a new car (SUV) and he went into a 20 minute dissertation to justify his purchase. I then asked him what the real reason was! He responded - “…I had that itch…”! I suggested to him that it might have been more appropriate to just “SCRATCH IT”!

Let's set the record straight, twin brother AbacoMike!

I traded in a 2022 GLE450 fully equipped, with 7000 miles, for a 2023 GLE53 fully equipped, without Distronic Cruise Control. Paid $91,120 MSRP, and received $73,000 for my GLE450. When my twin brother asked me why I would get a new car, I didn't respond with 20 minutes of excuses; I told him because I wanted an new AMG GLE53!! And, I didn't have an itch that needed scratching.

Anyhow, after setting the record straight, It's a pleasure to read all the members' comments.

There is a real shortage of mechanics these days, so I guess that mechanic kept his job because it would be hard to find a replacement. But, he probably learned his lesson, and he will probably be watched more carefully from now on.

I just made an appointment to take the E400 in for an oil change. I used to be able to get an appointment within 5 working days, I called April 6th and the first opening was May 11th.

Besides Canadians are more easier going...not as quick to fire someone I guess.

Qbrozen, my father spent a few days in Hvalfjordur, Iceland in December of 1941as part of an all-inclusive cruise that lasted about 4 years and covered 169,446 miles.
In looking at a map of his travels I saw he was in Adak Alaska, part of the Aleutians Islands. I heard this week that Adak is the city in the US that is the most distant from a Starbucks at a bit over 1000 miles.

    @jwm40517,
Was the map something that someone did on their own?
We did a home reno for a vet and he had a map that showed where we went during the war, what army he was in and included info about his superior officers.

I can think of more than a few. But I’d settle right now for a few tales from the twin brothers @abacomike and @steebie1044 when they were in their teens.

I’m betting it was the Navy. Who else takes you on a cruise for 4 years without wives or girl friends but they don’t charge you for it. In fact, they pay you.

It was , of course, WW2 on the battleship Mississippi. Several ships were in Iceland protecting shipping in the North Atlantic from German subs. When Pearl Harbor was attacked they went to the South Pacific. Took a month to get to the Panama Canal.
The info is from a large format book much like a college yearbook . Inside the front and rear covers are identical maps with lines indicating their travels. The ship was in Tokyo in September 1945, and 6 weeks later ended up in New Orleans. The book has about 126 pages of photos and written history. Similar to my basic training book.

Thinking of Pearl Harbor reminded me of an old Pearl Harbor survivor that was a member of the American Legion Post where I was a member. He was 92 or so in 2015 and his son would drop him off every afternoon for a few beers and he never had to buy one. He was on a ship that sunk at Pearl and went to another ship that also was sunk. They sent him home after the second one.
He was always introduced to visiting Legion members. One time a visitor, on being told of his history, the visitor said " damn sir you had a couple of really bad days". Sort of defines the term - understatement.

That old timer and millions like him are why we have what we have today. They paid a hell of a price giving that to us. Unfortunately there are too many folks today that don’t appreciate that.

My brother picked up his AMG GLE 53 this afternoon. I was on FaceTime with him and he showed me the new car in his garage. Gorgeous vehicle. He seems to have fallen head over heels for it the way he described how it handled.

On the left front quarter panel it shows it’s a “biturbo” which to me sounds like two turbos. But its engine is a 3.0 inline 6. I thought online 6’s had only one turbo and V6’s could have 2 turbos. Can anyone help me understand this configuration?

Those 22” black wheels are awesome looking. I just pray he enjoys this vehicle more than any other vehicle he’s owned.

a truck that I really like. But prices on these, seem to be silly high. This seems nice but not mint, and some concerns about rust on chassis. So needs some TLC.

just like the new one I had back then. Other than it was a 4 banger, and RWD.

at a reasonable price, would make a perfectly fine hack around truck.

    Ugh… I’m tired.

Took this room from very kids beachy to more of an adult room. This will now be where my Mom sleeps when she comes down (there is a recliner you can’t see which is what she prefers to sleep in). Not the best furniture layout because of the corner recliner, but it works. Daybed came from home, wife wanted it out of her office. No one has ever slept on it.

Floor is an LVP. Little tricky at times to get them to click together but very easy overall and all you need is a razor knife to cut. I did buy a Harbor Freight multi tool to under cut the jambs. I know the boards are running the wrong way but we matched the rest of the house .. which arguably run the wrong way too. Also bought a pair of trim shears for the quarter round. Will never use a miter box again

Now to do the other bedroom. Luckily that just needs new paint and furniture setup. Guys should be coming for tile in the bathrooms and laundry. Then I’ll probably paint the rest of the place. Next year (or maybe after season) get some work done in kitchen.

It looks great. The floor looks OK too as far as it's running.

I never heard of trim shears for cutting quarter round. It makes sense though. I assume they won't cut trim any bigger than quarter round if I am Googling the right thing.

floor looks right based on the shape of the room. But it is supposed to be laid perpendicular to the way the joists run. At least it is for hardwood. LVP may not matter.

that looks like the same stuff (one of the cheapest that Lowe's had) that I recently helped my son put down in half his basement. Not sure how many SF but I think we went through 25 or so boxes. About a 40x20 space roughly. Not terribly difficult but there definitely was a certain technique to getting in snapped together easily.

    @ abacomike Bioturbo:

Each turbocharger is connected to the three cylinders on its respective side of the engine and they work together to create boost faster and more efficiently. Biturbo systems are less stressful for engines and they get better gas mileage.
MBs have had twin-turbos for some time, my 2017 has it. Just my opinion but I think they also reduce turbo lag which I get in the 2014 C250 which has just one turbo.

Thanks guys. Floor came from a local place (same as doing our tile). It was 2.91 sq Ft, the pad was pre attached which I like.

That’s an insane price for that truck from a practical standpoint. Seems rust free but unless it has some unique collector value I don’t see it. Then again I think market values have left me in the past.

Probably worth the price by today’s standards. There’s rust thru on the passenger door and on the cab corner where one of the steps is attached. Considerable rust on the bumper too. It has fender flares on the wheel wells that usually only come on the Sports trim. I’d want to know what’s under there. The headliner is falling down but that’s a cheap fix.

That mileage is pretty high. I have a similarly rusty Ranger for sale near me with only 37,000 miles (or so the seller says) for not much more than that.
