I read an online review of a DeWalt battery lawn mower, uses 2 20V L-I tool batteries. They said it lasts 40 minutes on a full charge which they said equates to about 8000 Sq ft of mowing. It is self-repelled to boot. $600.</blockquote

That’s twice what a cheap gas powered lawnmower costs. He could buy 3 sheep for that price and never have to cut the grass again.

Lowes has the Ego mower I would have gotten for $450 now. 55 minute run time, more than enough for me.

I seem to have misplaced a box of tools. including my spark plug socket. My neighbor brought one over but was not long enough. I think the mower is only 3 years old so highly unlikely the plug failed.

I am not even sure where the carb on this thing is, or how to get to it without dismantling the whole engine. If I can't get it to fire after sitting with fresh gas and extra cleaner in the tank the rest of this week it is going to the repair guy to sort out. My guess is gunk in the carb or hose, so at least that is fixable. last time I brought one in the engine had seized. That was toast!

    @venture,
I would look into new hardware first before replacing the whole door.

    I hear you.

I put this thing in about 20 years ago. It has given me what it can. I'm just tired of messing with it.

Nostalgia: It's an 8' door so everything is heavy. I remember picking up one of the doors from the driveway and carrying it up 3 steps to the patio to install it. I don't think I could do that today - at least I don't want to. :)

It seems like it. That has to be the labor difference.

I have nothing against people making a decent wage, but most of that difference is going to the owner, not the workers.

Everything the owner/company provides is marked up, including the labor. So if the guys are making $25/hr., they get billed out to you at a higher rate. No different than when the contractor buys materials at HD and you pay an upcharge over what he paid for them.

How do I get the pics I recently took from my iPhone to the Edmunds.com site in the first place? Being as tech challenged as I am, I gave my kids a paper with "turn on" and "turn off" so I could learn how to use a computer years ago. I really had no real formal training on computers so had no clue what to do with the pc we had. So, it's just that I don't know a lot about computers as the reason why I ask a lot of questions about it, stuff that comes easy to others doesn't come so easy to me.
Do appreciate all your help though. I'm the kind of person that needs stuff "dumbed down" if you will...never assume that I know what you're talking about because in most cases, I don't! I just need patience and great instructions & I'll eventually "get it"!

When I click on “photo library” it automatically goes to the photos on my IPad. Click on the pic you want and then hit “add”. You’ll see a link to the pic appear on your post. That link becomes your picture. Don’t ask me how, maybe it’s little Edmunds elves.

I assume your phone works the same as an IPad.
Looks like the only way you get any headroom in that thing is with the top off.

    @stickguy,
Check out the price of those EGO batteries, they don't seem to last long.
I had a battery mower for 7 years and never replaced the batteries but I bought it to use on a specific part of my lawn. Left it for the new house owner when we moved.
Still haven't had to mow since. Hopefully my lawn shows up soon.

If the batteries die I’ll quit mowing! Almost just did. Had a landscaper over to estimate on some bed and edging work and he said they mow also and would do ours every Friday for $30.

Visiting our daughter at her new Boston rental. A 5 year old townhouse. Apparently was invited to be a handyman! I new about the broken garage door hinge and brought parts for that and got that fixed. Threw in some bonus tasks. Fixed the bolt to cure a floppy toilet seat. Adjusted a cabinet slider. And something else I already forgot.

Now they are taking us to a brewery for a reward!

Just got my Honda gas mower back from service. It started on the second pull on first start since last August.
Nothing was wrong with it, I just hadn't done anything to it, other than changing the blades and keeping it clean for 7 or 6 years.
This is the last year Honda is making gas mowers.
I thought about getting one and passing my current mower on to my son in law but it seems like some changes are causing them to break.
He is still using my Mom's old mower which is got to be at least 30 years old.

I had planned on buying a Honda mower when my current one needs replacement. Sad to learn they will no longer be made and recent ones have been less than reliable.

Last week I checked the status of my state and fed returns.
    Status of both were 'Received'.
Got the state refund the next day and the fed should be deposited tomorrow.
Not sure if checking the status speeded up the process.

Every time I hear about someone replacing a patio door I can’t help but think of my experience doing that:

Back in 1999 when we were in this house about a year, I decided to replace the puny 12X16 foot deck that was at ground level. I kept changing my mind about how big to make it and finally decided to extend the deck clear across the back of the house. Turned out the deck would now be about 14X42 feet. Since I was taking the deck to the end of the house where the dining room is I decided to take out the large dining room window and put in a door so the deck would be accessible from the dining room and not just from the laundry room on the other end of the house. Mrs. j really disliked it when folks had to go through the laundry room to get to the deck.

When I went to Home Depot to look at doors, for the fun of it, I asked the guy how much they charged for labor to install a sliding patio door. The price he gave me was at least $350 and that was for a simple job of taking out an existing door and installing a new door. I told the guy mine would be a new installation replacing a 6 foot wide by about a 3 1/2 foot high window. He told me they’d have to come out and give me a quote but said it would have to be at least $1000 for that kind of work. When I told him my house was brick not siding, he said they only had one guy that would cut out brick and install a door and he was pretty sure the last time that guy did that job a few years earlier the price was almost $3,500 for labor alone. Only the contracting gods would know what that job would cost today. :'(

Being very energetic and most cheap back then I rented a concrete cutting saw and made a ton of dust cutting the brick out myself. When folks I knew heard about what I was going to do they told me they’d come over after I started to help me pick up the bedroom furniture that would now be in the dining room. So far, the bedroom furniture is still where its always been.

I was very energetic and poor back then when I installed that door. Two, 4' double glass doors are heavy BTW.

I also took out a series of windows in our bedroom on the second floor and put a 6' sliding door in there and built a raised deck. More energy than brains, but Mrs. Venture still likes to go out on the deck off of the bedroom to read occasionally.

    So we did a thing.

For many years now we take off the week between Christmas and New years and never do much of anything.

So I had been researching some cruises and was planning on surprising the family. Well.. that was never gonna work because of how the holiday falls this year. Nearly every 7 day cruise includes Xmas eve and day.

I talked to my wife about it over the weekend and apparently she has also been researching trips as well. Same page for once, lol. We ended up booking a Christmas week cruise leaving out of New Orleans on the 24th of December and coming back NYE. We will enjoy the holiday on the ship in the warm weather. This also means we won’t spend two days cooking and hosting. I’m super excited for my wife since her birthday is on Christmas Day and she will actually get to enjoy it!

Most likely we are going to drive it. I have zero desire to deal with holiday air travel with the kids. We will leave on the 22nd and take our time getting there and do some stuff along the way.

Surprisingly, the cold weather doesn’t bother me during the holiday season because I don’t know the season any other way. I’ve often wondered what it would be like to decorate a Palm tree rather than a Christmas tree or Hanukkah bush for the holiday but I don’t think it would take me very long to get used to it.

Growing up in Southern California, one of our Christmas traditions was for my dad to build a fire in the fireplace, regardless of what the outside weather was like.

Now that my son and his family are living in my parents home, he has continued that tradition...

I also think it will be pretty cool to cruise down the Mississippi River on sail away too. We were going to go out of Miami but the ship that is sailing there while a bit bigger/newer lost a lot of the deck space for pools and slides to the race course and VR room. My kids love the slides and pools more than anything else.

Since it was a Democrat that introduced the bill that died, it’s only fair to blame the Republican’s for allowing outdated YouTube info to exist.

So was I until I thought about it for a second. Screwed up flights would ruin everything.

Well given that a Hanukkah bush isn’t a thing, I imagine the tree type isn’t as important. B)

I was right there with you until the driving to NOLA part, but I totally understand why. What a great, hassle free trip for the holidays!

Growing up in Southern California, one of our Christmas traditions was for my dad to build a fire in the fireplace, regardless of what the outside weather was like.

Now that my son and his family are living in my parents home, he has continued that tradition...

That’s the fun thing about traditions…they don’t have to make sense but they have to continue to keep succeeding generations aware of them.

Sounds like the logic of a lawmaker who lives in NYC and takes the subway to work. I think my company already buys cars with a lot of that tech but that part about the car spying and ratting you out to law enforcement would make me reluctant to buy a new car ever again.

What happens to people like stickguy who brings his NJ car into NYS and can’t register it.

What happens to those of modest means who can’t afford $10k of additional equipment.

    I sense ulterior motives here.

As it is I think the governor either has or is advocating for a ban on all gas powered car sales in NY by 2030. I hope by then I’ll be racing on a heavenly track.

In heaven there is no beer but I’m sure there are rust free bargains with low mileage.😇

I hope you’re wrong about that beer thing but if there’s also no bourbon they’re gonna have to rename that place. :|

I finally took a few pics of our garage and the air handler/water heater in front of my side. Once I figure out how to post them in here, you'll see immediately the issue I face parking on my side. That equipment takes up 95% of the lip in front of the garage thus limiting how long my vehicle can be.
Were discussing this at work yesterday in the chase van & the Einstein in front of me says, "why not just park your vehicle outside?" Tell him the reason we've got an empty garage is to use it for it's intended purpose...to park our vehicles inside & not be a storage closet! Guess he just didn't get it as he parks his newish Lincoln outside at his rental place. I hate parking outside overnight or when I'm off like today. I pull it right in or out as needed. I usually get positive comments about how new my almost 9 year old vehicle looks & think it's because it's in the garage 75% of the time. I also get it washed on a regular basis, like every 3 weeks now. Have stopped being so anal about it getting waxed every three months or so but, it still looks good & the water still beads up on the hood and other surfaces. We did have that ceramic coating put on about four years back and still seems to be working.

No one I ever met had a Hanukkah bush because they don't exist! It's like putting lipstick on a pig...it's still a pig! But hey, figure to just let folks call them what they will. I know we never had one and the one time I put a stocking on one of our fireplaces when we lived in New York, it was gone the next morning with nothing being said. I figured out quite quickly that the other holiday that many celebrated was not for us & never mentioned it again. A quiet lesson learned.

Our current lawn guy has been charging us $25/cut for many years now...he comes twice a month & does a mediocre job. Our lawn is easy to cut & he trims back the hedges on the side of the house every other cut. We planted plants up front of the house that don't need much water, he tends to these when they get out of hand. Last year, he raised his price to $30/cut & that was that. He shows up & does the work we need done so we're o k with that. Prices are going up on everything it seems lately so just hope our yearly raise is enough to cover it all.
