I saw one of these today, a Mercedes AMG GLE 53 coupe in monochrome black.
My question is....what is the appeal? Why would someone spend their hard earned money to buy one of these?

It could be worse, it could be this:

Not fair...you're choosing the worst looking one possible. G Wagons can be a thing of beauty, with those large windows and completely flat slab sides!

Gee, @driver100, I would have thought you’d say it’s worse if it was an EV.

At least that GLE has an honest to god gasoline engine…

Sigh, due to family visiting from SF, I was not able to attend the Greenwich Concours d' Elegance. But, the weather here is horrible this weekend, I'll believe it to be true for Greenwich, too.

And, I get to pickup one SF family at Logan, flight majorly delayed, eta now 03:48 Sunday. Yay.

Some sort of "free" Macafee came on the Dell laptop I bought a couple of years ago. Even though I never configured it or said yes to anything after the free trial, it still nags at me every so often. Just went through the latest round of uninstalling it last week. Interested if it will work this time around.

Speaking of laptops, I have an old (2010 I think) Asus laptop that I set up with an external monitor and keyboard on my office desk here at home after I had some issues with it fairly early on (the power plug broke off the motherboard internally, which made it dicey to keep using it as a portable after it got repaired according to the guy who fixed it). I mostly use it for web surfing and email. It began life with Windows 7 and now has 10, but it is really struggling, especially with disk thrashing. I decided to upgrade it with a SSD this week, and having done that to another machine (another Dell) last year, figured I knew what to expect.

Not with this thing. I got the SSD drive connected yesterday morning and began the cloning process. The cloning software (Acronis) that came with the drive was really slow mostly because the Asus only has USB 2.0 ports on it, not USB 3 which is 10 times faster. But just before bedtime last night it said the cloning was successful. Today should have been the easy part, swapping the hardware. The physical swap was easy, but the Asus BIOS would not recognize the new drive. Apparently the SSD is too new for what that can handle and Asus offers no update path for it on their awful website. So after a whole lot of trials and tribulations I decided to throw in the towel, wipe the drive, and send it back to Amazon. I think the Asus is going to be retired very soon.

There are several ways to work around the problem. The best way is to do a clean install of Windows. You can get the install media (an iso file) directly from Microsoft. Write that iso to a flash drive, using Rufus (google it), then boot from the flash drive and do a clean install of Windows on the new SSD. A clean install is always preferable. This will leave you with the necessity to reinstall all of your application software, and move across your data from the old hard drive.

Pretty much everyone who works in the business will recommend the clean install. It's more trouble, but the results are always going to be better.
It seems like you're suggesting an alternative solution, specifically for installing Windows on a new SSD. If you prefer a clean install of Windows, here's a general outline of the process:

    Obtain the Windows ISO file:

Visit the Microsoft website or use an official source to download the Windows ISO file. You will need a valid license key to activate Windows.
Create a bootable USB drive using Rufus:

Download Rufus from their official website.
Launch Rufus and select your USB drive from the device drop-down menu.
Choose the downloaded Windows ISO file as the bootable image.
Configure any necessary settings, such as the partition scheme (MBR or GPT) and file system (FAT32 or NTFS).
Start the process to create the bootable USB drive.
Install Windows on the new SSD:

Insert the bootable USB drive into your computer.
Restart your computer and access the boot menu or BIOS settings. The specific key or method to access these options depends on your computer manufacturer.
Choose the USB drive as the primary boot device.
The Windows installation process should begin. Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.
Select the new SSD as the destination for the Windows installation when prompted.
Customize any settings during the installation process, such as language preferences and user accounts.
Allow the installation to complete. Your computer may restart several times during this process.
    Reinstall applications and transfer data:

Once Windows is installed, you will need to reinstall your applications from their original sources.
Copy any necessary data from your old hard drive to the new SSD. This can be done by connecting the old hard drive to your computer or using an external storage device.
Take this opportunity to organize and back up your data as needed.
Remember to back up any important files before proceeding with the installation to avoid data loss. The specific steps may vary slightly depending on your system configuration and the version of Windows you're installing. Always refer to the official documentation provided by Microsoft for the most accurate and up-to-date instructions.

That particular G is the best spec (non-AMG), those are the exact wheels I would choose for my own build. And on German plates, so maybe even a diesel. That's the ideal one, as the AMGs compromise a bit for the badge, are maybe a bit flamboyant, and kind of reek of dirty money to me anyway.

Adam Wade a.k.a. Rare Classic Cars on YouTube posted another segment of his sit-down with Bob Lutz this week talking about why Pontiac was dropped during the bankruptcy reorganization. He said they had been trying to reposition Pontiac as an affordable sporty line of cars using RWD platforms to differentiate it from Chevy. The Solistice was the start, then they would have stretched the Alpha platform (ATS & Camaro) for a RWD mainstream sporty sedan, and then do something with the G8 for a full-size. With all the financial woes they finally had to give it up. What I found interesting was that he conceded that with the way the market in the years since has gone mostly all CUV/SUV, that it likely wouldn’t have worked out.

I know we have a few audio buffs here …..

I scored this today off Craigslist. I’ve always wanted a matched set of Adcom (early 90s) components and this was a solid deal I couldn’t pass up. Bought it from a life long audiophile who was downsizing. It wasn’t cheap but not top of the market either. If I wanted to flip it piece by piece on EBay, I’d make money.

So Happy early Father’s Day to me.

For some things, less is more. I still prefer my MB sedans with formal grilles and hood ornaments too, so there's that.

A while back I built my own G, this was the summary. I opted for a special color (modern equivalent to my old car) and an interior upgrade, but no AMG stuff (and I think I might remove the bullbar):

F150/Silverado/Ram1500s are modern day Galaxie/Impala or CV/TC/DeVille. Probably will become even more popular if they can be mated to EV and our roads continue to decay - the ride height and wheel size will help in that regard.

Son #1’s GMC has the crew cab with the 6 1/2 foot bed. As I mentioned in an earlier post he was considering an 8 foot bed until a friend cautioned him against it because it’s a beast to parallel park and nearly impossible to find a parking spot for it in parking lots.

Also, his friend told him to forget about his wife ever driving it because of its size and parking problems. Before his friend bought his, his wife liked the idea of driving a real pickup, (he had a 6 1/2 foot bed before the 8 foot beast), then his wife turned on him after the first time she took it out. Came home and said, “that’s it, I’m not driving that THING again. That thing is waaaay to big for me”. I’ve heard women are known for changing their mind so I guess you can say she was just exercising her femininity.

FWIW, I feel a real pickup should have an 8 foot bed. It doesn’t have to be a crew cab but it has to be an 8 footer.

    appears to be a Compass.
What I find interesting is the state of the front wheel. Possibly, it was driven for a long time at high speeds on what started as a flat tire, then down to the wheel, then down to the rotor, then fire ensued. Just a theory.

Not really. Personal would be if I asked him if it was a tilting/heated/massaging type. :p

speaking of trucks, I found a rare OF poverty special locally.

I did look at specs. The regular cab 6.5' bed is actually not super long. only 209".

You are a true traditionalist. That brown one needs something to liven it up! :)

For some things, less is more. I still prefer my MB sedans with formal grilles and hood ornaments too, so there's that.

Well, the blue does a lot more for it than that dead brown color. I still think they need a bit of pizzaz to set them off, and not look so formal.

My grandson’s college baseball team is playing in the College World Series in North Carolina. He is a pitcher for California State University San Bernardino. They are an NCAA Division II team and are playing for the National Title for the first time in the school’s history.

They won the Western Division II championship. He is very excited.

    That's very cool. :)

When I worked at BMW a girl returned a 3er loaner that had a bullet hole in the passenger door.

Now the question is, was the bullet inbound or outbound?

I was looking at some classic car clubs and their schedules for large get togethers.

I wish I was in Spokane... the Buick Club of America has their national meet there
starting July 12. AT least the Oldsmobile Car Club nationals is in Dayton at the Mariott
    in August.

I just went to a GM only show last Saturday and it was great: Buick,
Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Cadillac were the brands invited along with their lower models such as Lasalle, Oakland, and I forget the other two related models that were were invited. No
Chevies and thus no Corvettes--refreshing compared to the usual GM show.

I'm so tired of seeing cars that have had different wheels, or colors, or engines
put into what could have been cars restored to their original state. These cars
were all great. About 75-80 cars I'd estimate.

Come down to the Keeneland Concours d’Elegance on July 15. Cadillac is the featured marque. My Club Sport will be entered in the Youngtimers class.

I will have to check that out, although I might not be in town that weekend. Interestingly, years ago the Buick Club had a meet near me when I lived in the Seattle area.

The brown is better than black anyway. A black G is like a Russian mafia cliche almost to the point of humor.

It's a tough line on those - they look too blingy with shiny stuff, and ridiculous with too much black trim faux sport stuff.
