I would never pay for that stuff just on principle but also because I would never buy a car with those features in the first place.
It makes you wonder though, will they be eliminating trim levels and just having an on-off for features already installed on all cars?
One of the wealthiest Canadians Ted Rogers made his money from cable TV companies and cell phones mostly. He loved products that had subscriptions, that way the consumer was paying him automatically every month.....a steady stream of income. I guess the car companies caught on.
About a year ago, the parent company of my wife's cooking studio was bought out by a bigger company, and they've been making all sorts of changes, big and small.
One of the things they are trying to implement is a subscription for the weekly classes that the studios offer. My wife is resisting this, as the administration of the program would fall on the studio owners, and my wife doesn't need the extra hassle. The current offerings are just fine, and they are as busy as they want to be.
We aren't getting rich from it, but everyone is happy with the amount of business we are doing.
BMW and Mercedes have charged an annual fee for remote features, real-time traffic information, and other options for over a decade. Ditto for my 4xe; I subscribe to some but not all. No big deal.
Other subscriptions that come to mind: We bought a new fridge. Of course you have to buy a $50 filter every 6 months. What a stream of money that produces!
We bought a new HP printer....print, scan, copier. Of course it was impossible to set up the wi-fi capability so I called the 1-800 number. They got it going, and they offered to clean up my computer, add ad-block, put on free enhanced security etc. Then they offered a deal, about $500 for 3 years call them anytime there was a problem on any HP device. I kept saying no but did pay $100 for one year. We have 3 HP computers and 3 printers, and we have called for service about 12 times in the first year, one was a really bad security breech alarm....they fixed it each time. I was skeptical at first but for about $9 a fix it has been well worth it.
(btw.....2 fixes were when the internet provider changed our modems and routers, so all the printers had to be reset again.....that call took about an hour to get everything going again)
About batteries for EVs. One guy was told a replacement battery would be $50000 for a KIA, unfortunately he scrapped the car before head office heard about it and would have done it for less. But, these prices are Canadian so reduce them by 20 or 25% to get a U.S. price; “prices for replacement battery modules from the automakers run from $15K (some Leaf models) to about $45K (some Hyundai and Kia models). Bolt and Tesla S & X are just under $30K. The solution before scrapping the car would have been to source a used battery pack from a recycler or locating a shop that could rebuild the original module. Assuming someone does it, the price would be under $10K.”
No subscriptions or batteries for these. New matching OTR microwave is also here and being installed next week. Fridge is all that I could get to fit in the space until renos are done. Was also the least expensive name brand in that group (Frigidaire) since it may well go away after renos. I actually quite like it. The old one was noisy and on its last legs. This one is whisper-quiet and definitely cools better.

Wow, even $10k spent on an old Kia would be more than it’s worth. According to Edmunds my Kia is still worth about $14k but I don’t think I’d spend $10k to fix it.

We just picked up a garage fridge off of FB Marketplace. $275 delivered and looks brand new. It’s a 6 or 7 years old Kenmore 18 cubic ft.
We just couldn’t make do with one fridge any longer. Especially considering my wife is hosting her work Christmas party for 25 people next week.
we just did thanksgiving, day after T'day, and today had the annual pierogi making festival. so both our fridges are stuffed full of food and leftover beverages. I would not even try to convince the wife we could go with 1 in the new place. so instead we will have 3! Regular kitchen fridge (which will be a little smaller, since going with counter depth), the basement fridge we will bring with us, and adding a bar area in the new kitchen design with a beverage fridge. If that is not enough capacity for the 2 of us, she will need an intervention.
previous owners left us a basement fridge since they had no place to put it (went into a rental). was new with the house so only 3 YO now. I think it is 18CF, normal top freezer, no ice maker. but works great and extremely quiet. Might be a Frigidaire. Since we need one anyway, might as well move this one.

Made no sense. We have two at the shore and even at the place before that had two. Much needed. It’s already well stocked as I saw a food delivery come today.

I am more of a big picture guy, I don't get hung up on minor details. MOST people would know what I meant!!!!!
As the former owner of an '05 TL, I agree. A simple, handsome, classic sedan design. The follow up, not so much.
'21 Dark Blue/Black Audi A7 PHEV (mine); '22 White/Beige BMW X3 (hers); '20 Estoril Blue/Oyster BMW M240xi 'Vert (Ours, read: hers in 'vert weather; mine during Nor'easters...)
well, nobody should claim that is the cause of high rental rates when, regardless of the daily rate, they still want to charge additional for insurance.
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S
well, nobody should claim that is the cause of high rental rates when, regardless of the daily rate, they still want to charge additional for insurance.
The owner's insurance pays for whatever coverage the renter has on their own car(s). But the rental company tries to collect for all kinds of other "losses" such as loss of ability to rent that car each day it's out-of-service. I doubt State Farm pays for that.
So the rental company sells an all inclusive insurance. Actually I took that when I rented a Dodge van for getting all the stuff to my son's wedding in Dublin (Columbus) OH. I wanted no worries if van got scraped, totalled, usw.
The range AB has sits on the floor, which is not at all like the one in the pic d100 posted.
It's actually worse to make a big deal out of a small technical error, than it is to make a tiny technical error.
It's clear that you've never been exposed to (I knew better than to think you'd ever worked in such a detail-oriented "space") aerospace or nuclear endeavours.

It's clear that you've never been exposed to (I knew better than to think you'd ever worked in such a detail-oriented "space") aerospace or nuclear endeavours.
Party on.
When I had our business I was the visionary, I got other people to work on the details. Not saying detail work isn't important, just saying it wasn't worth making a big deal over a simple grammatical or technical error.
When I taught school over 50 years ago, the new method was not to take off marks for spelling errors, because it could inhibit creative thinking. Being creative and writing a good story is more important than a spelling mistake. Drop-in, slide-in, slip-in....if those are the kind of mistakes you would actually comment on then I'd say.....get a life!
So I had my first ever Mercedes service interaction today and I’m not sure if it was a bad day for them or what
Back story - The selling dealer destroyed one of the key fobs to the car during detail. They didn’t have one in stock so they ordered and sent to me. I asked for programming instructions and they explained only they can do it. Ok, but I’m too far can I have a local dealer do it? Sure they said and they will pay for it and gave me a contact.
I made an appointment (two+ weeks to get in) and explained the whole situation. I was put on hold and they said it was fine and everything was put into the notes along with setting me up in the computer. I gave the VIN of the car, address etc.
I get there at 8:10 this morning for my 8:30 appointment. Place is under construction so I just found a spot and walked into service.
I walked up to one of the desks and she blurts out “you picking up”. I said no dropping off. Oh - well the valet is outside go see them. Alright but I’m here.. “go see them”
So I walk outside and find the valet guys and explain I’m here to drop off. I point where the car is parked and they scan it or whatever and then walk me back into the building to a service advisor.
I wait there for 5 mins while he wraps up whatever he is doing and then finally start the process. He had a paper with my name in it and goes “what are we doing”. I explain the whole thing and said it should all be in the computer. He got agitated and nothing is in the computer and storms off. Comes back even more agitated and goes I have to figure this mess out. I said would you like me to talk to someone else here? A manager maybe. So I guess one overheard that and came over. The service agent starts explaining and the manager says how about we get this started and worry about the payment while it’s being done.
Apparently nothing was in the computer so I waited while he entered all my information and while he did I gave them the contact at the selling dealer.
They took over two hours to program the fob and called me on my cell in the waiting room to tell me it was done. Service advisor was much nicer on the way out.
I think they washed the car. It was clean when I brought it but there were some water drops in the door jambs.
I’m not sure I’ll have it serviced there again. I think there is a dealer close to my shore house.

That wasn’t so long. You made it long with paragraph breaks. Talk to @Sandman6472 for how to shorten it up.

Yep. Entire showroom is gutted.
They must be stressed because they weren’t very nice people.
I joked with my wife and said my shorts and hoodie must have upset them!
