Will a Jeep Cherokee Sport last me at least 200,000 miles?

Since they aren't making the sports any longer, prices are down. 15,800 for the sport and was impressed with the suspension but don't even intend to drive it off road. Need it for work and hauling lots of stuff. But then drove the Ford SportTrac and really liked it. But it will cost about 4K or 5K more. Which will go 200,000 miles with least amount of trouble? Which will hold it's resale value more? I keep my cars forever or until they die so I suppose the resale value isn't actually important. I just hate buying a new vehicle and want to make sure it is one that will last. Is it more practical to just open the hatchback of the sport and throw my junk in rather than using the back seat of the sporttrac? And if it's raining, I can't use the bed of the sportrac...what do custom covers cost for the bed?

I have a SportTrac my advice is if you can get one at close to invoice do it skip the Jeep Sport if you can afford too. Ford has a great bed cover for 590 sticker it folds in two at the center so back or front can be opened its locking and keyed to the door keys and when adjusted properly its water tight. Check out www.mysporttrac.com for loads of info maybe even a few slightly used Tracs. Almost all after market Cap makers and Taunau cover companies have covers anywhere from 150 bucks for a soft vinyl cover to 1500 for a color matched cap. SportTrac also has a very well reviewed 4.0 motor and a great computer controlled 5 speed auto. 205-210hp 240lbs of tourqe.

All I can say is the Jeep 4.0L I-6 is a phenomenally durable motor, people have testified to their longevity time and time again. 200,000? Please. More like 300,000.

I own a 1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo which I bought new in Sept.1990. It currently has 167,000 miles on it. I haven't had any major problems with the I6 engine. I have had to replace the water pump and alternator but I consider that normal. It has been serviced regularly (about 3-4,000 miles every oil change). I have also had to have it repainted since the original paint on it started flaking off after about 5 years (this was mainly on the hood).

I just got me a 96 and I love the thing but the biggest reason I bought it was because I have two friends with them. One of my friends jeep has over 300,000 miles and the other has 260,000 both are running strong that quite impressed me. Besides that they both beat them to death.

I Know a good motor when I see one, and the jeep 4.0 is a great motor ,I too have seen many jeeps with this motor go past 200 K and properly cared for it will last past 200,000 miles , more like 300 K , I Don't know that much about the ohc 4.0 in the sport trac, but its ohc design , makes me think the jeep 4.0 would be stronger ..... alot stronger , go with the jeep .

My '89 Cherokee has 245k miles with no engine problems. However, just about everything has been replaced. Replaced tranny and radiator twice, AC just went out, new heater core last year. The last 3 years have been very expensive, but the body and paint job still holding up.
