    Some vehicles (not necessarily expensive ones, either), and this may be one, stretch a coil spring and compress a single gas strut when the deck lid is closed. When the lid is released, the spring contracts and gives it an opening kick, after which the gas piston gives it the impulse to open fully, and holds it open.

    First time I used the trunk release, it almost knocked my chin out as I wasn't expecting it to swing all the way up, especially in that speed.
