I've worked on automatic transmissions since 1974.

Could you , would you give us a clue what trouble you are having?

At 50,000 km's and still under warranty I took it in and they fixed the front seal. Shortly thereafter I noticed in the mornings it felt as though the truck was slipping, this I put down to colder mornings. Two weeks ago I noticed transmission fluid again and contacted the dealership. They said "No go it's out of warranty" This was only last year they did the seal. Today I was offered 50/50 and refused as I feel it's either shoddy workmanship or there's more to this problem than they are making out.
In the four days prior to taking it in for inspection, I put in 3 litres of tranny fluid.
Also it started the day before to start very, very rough and the whole truck shuddered and vibrated until it warmed up and then it seemed to be smoother.
Any help would sure be appreciated.

I have a 1998 GMC Sierra pickup which I had to replace a transmission in because a bearing in the torque convertor failed and destroyed the rest of the transmission. This happened at 88,000 km. After fighting with GM for a month and a half they offered me a "good-will" offer of $1000 towards the over $3000 bill. What a joke! GM pissed me off so much I built a web-site, www.lemonaid.ca. This truck has been nothing but problems. Ignition wiring burning, engine cold start knock, door handle breaks, rear spring clunk, heater leaks. If you want a reliable truck don't buy GMC. They don't give a crap about customer satisfaction.

Did you take them to court, reason I'm asking is, today I'm starting the process and plan to take them to court. Today the signs go on my truck outside and plan to take it to the dealership who originaly said they repaired the transmission seal and parade my truck with full display of problems.
We also have a ticking which has become increasingly worse over this past year, weird as the dealerships deny they hear it. What a bunch of snowjob clones these so called experts are.
Defects are as follows, brakes failed twice for me on this truck, ticking from engine area, transmission seal bursts twice, door handle broke (interior) seats ripped, now in the past week, morning starts are like starting a jumbo jet and the truck shakes like it's having a nervous breakdown!
Anyone interested in a class action suit against GM Canada, contact me as these guys have not heard the last of me.

Hey there GMCHATER let me make sure I've got this right.

You bought a vehicle with what, a 50,000km warranty?

Your vehicle experienced a failure at 88,000km.

The Dealer then had the unmitigated gall to deny warranty coverage for this failure! The nerve of these guys! Lets form a posse and shoot 'em all.

Did you figure that when the Warranty read 50,000km they really meant 90,000km?

Truck was purchased NEW from dealership, the warranty was as follows, 3yrs or 60,000 kms.
At 50,000kms (June 2000) the torque convertor seal was replaced by the dealership, now December of 2001 the SAME seal at 85,000kms, only this time the seal is leaking 1 litre in every 300kms approx.
QUESTIONS I AM ASKING ARE AS FOLLOWS:

    1. WHERE DOES GMC STATE "CONSUMER BEWARE, THIS
TRANSMISSION SEAL IS ONLY GOOD FOR 50,000 KMS
AND WILL GO AGAIN AT 85,000KMS?

    2. IS A GMC SEAL ONLY GOOD FOR 35,000 MORE KMS
    AFTER REPLACEMENT?

Please let me also clarify that I AM NOT A "GM HATER" that was your rather distasteful terminology. Only a very, very dissapointed consumer who will not be bullied by the representatives of the company. Noting also, that a certain dealership tried to have me arrested this week for going about my normal business in the town that I live in. Who is the true "HATER" in this situation! Now I am not only an unhappy customer but even more angered that they have the nerve to infringe on my Civil Rights.

This is not a monetary issue either, it's the principal that a major manufacturer of vehicles is not acknowledging they have a major transmission problem with these vehicles. I am not the only person who has had this problem either, going by the names and phone numbers of people who have approached me this week with the very same problem. The reflection of these numbers is staggering as this is only one town, imagine if the media got hold of this situation and it went even more public.

Hope this clears the air for you NGPRO and gives you more clarity of the truths of this situation.

    Merry Christmas

I was at a friend's shop drinking coffee. As I was entering another guy who owns a GMC truck was leaving. My friend told me a story about that guy. Seems he has had the exact same problem as you. He had a leaking seal throughout his warranty period and the dealership told him not to worry about it and if it got worse they would take care of it. Well at 42000 miles or so, the seal failed. He had the truck towed to the dealership and was told it would cost $1600 to repair. From what I understand he got really pissed, false cracked the service advisor and sent him sprawling on the ground. The service manager and some techs had to assist the service writer in calming the guy down. No cops were called. Needless to say, the repairs were done at no charge.

Arent any repairs done (major repairs like that) warrantied at all? I mean ok at 35K lets say you get a new trans. At 37K it fails. Your stuck then cause your outta warranty? I would thing they would warranty their work

35000 to 37000 is quite different than 50000 to 85000. Even if you're talking miles and its in kilometers.

I wonder if the dealer fixed the front seal blow out correctly? Simply installing another seal is not the answer. You need to correct the problem that caused the seal to blow out.

There is also the possiblity that the pump bushing moved out to the seal to cause a leak. That is rare since GM redesigned(in the late 1980's) the area that the bushing presses into.

The front of the trans should be pulled out. A new bushing and seal with a special retainer should be installed at the same time. THere is a drain back hole that may be partially restricted too. The drive hub on the torque converter should be measured at this time too.

Warranty wise the dealers have a long history of : "sorry that's not covered".

agree with Crosley; quite possibly an inadequate repair. I really don't know off-hand what GM's repair parts and labor warranty is, but I think most manufacturers used to guaranty for 12mo/12K miles. If true, and there's a proveable history of leaking seals for these trucks, then you can try arguing a latent defect; otherwise I'd take the 50/50 split and maybe find another repair shop.
