More detail please. What kind of oil is required? Why won't any brand name synthetic in the right weight be sufficient? It just doesn't seem to me that much staring at oil choices should have been required.

You guys should really just keep a case of oil in the trunk. Check ANY owner forum and you will see that almost all of the early M275-equipped AMGs consume oil at the rate of about 1-quart every 1500 miles. You guys are going to be adding a lot of oil over the life of the vehicle.

Umm... okay. So, I went to the site and it says that it should use 0W-40W.

So, what's the problem here? Mobil 1 OW-40w isn't exactly "special oil" as its what is in our 2013 Pilot (not exactly a rare car).

Now, I will say that Mobile 1 lists it as a "European Car Formula" which IS special, but I would doubt that its required to use that anymore than its required to use "high mileage" or whatever variant.

This thing is a 602 horsepower hemorrhoid.

I'd love to drive it or go for a ride though...

All that matters is that it meets the current MB 229.3/229.5 for gasoline engines in N. America. The 2 most common oils in N. America that can be found easily are Mobil 1 0W-40 and Castrol Edge 0W-40, both are labeled "European Formula" and both are sold at Walmart.

So far it seems that pretty much everything is a challenge with this car.

A friend of mine was looking at an E350 and an E500, 2008 or so vintage, a couple of years ago at the MB dealer. I talked him into the E350 after reading some of what's on the net about the air suspension system. While I was at the dealer I was completely distracted by a 2005 or 6 Maserati Quattroporte, about 60K miles, asking mid-30s. I thought to myself, ten years ago I would have talked myself into this, consequence be darned. This AMG is one more example of the wisdom brought by age (and maybe a little experience)

I expect the most difficult challenge will be not going broke.

the MB does not use the "standard" mobil 1 oil it uses a special additive that Merc requires. i believe it has like Mtec or somehting like that on the bottle castrol also has an oil that is acceptable for Mercedes.

I'm sure you're right bass, but I personally think that is a scam by MB to get you to buy oil through them. I can't think of any reason why this engine, which is made of the same materials and uses the same basic technology as dozens of other engines should need some sort of super extra special synthetic.

Mobil 1 0W-40 is one of the the correct oils, at least make an attempt to check your facts before making blanket statements about a special additive. These oils are easily obtainable at WalMart and most any automotive retailer.

I still can't get over the fact that this is one of the most sophisticated, technologically advanced engine made by the Germans and yet is oil guzzler. Not good!
