Can 2002 Sienna rear hub speed sensor be replaced?

Can the speed sensor on the 2002 Sienna be replaced. I am getting a bad speed sensor code, and my mechanic says the whole hub has to be replaced to fix it. Yet I see the speed sensor part in on line catalogs.
Is braking unsafe without the speed sensor functioning?
