It all comes down to the fact that a lot of people (especially those shopping in this class) aren't really car people. They mainly care about style, practicality, features, and comfort. The CVT isn't a big deal for most people, especially since CVTs have gotten much better in recent years. While I'm not a huge fan of CVTs and could never see myself owning a car with one, I do have to admit that I've driven a few newer cars with impressive CVTs. They're a lot different than a traditional automatic and not as suited to spirited driving, but for most people, that doesn't matter.

I think it helps that is is one of the smallest CUVs available with an optional 3rd row, even if just for occaisional use.

It's an improvement over its predecessor, but that was also a good car (I owned one), and was popular enough that Nissan is actually keeping it around as a "Rogue Classic" for fleets and such. Or so I heard.

I think part of the car's popularity is that Nissan is pushing it, hard, at dealerships. I've visited several this year, and Rogues have always been positioned prominently in the showroom. Ask about any of Nissan's other SUVs, and the salespeople barely know what they are. I was researching a 2014 Xterra and a lot of dealerships didn't even have a single one in stock! "Nissan just doesn't send us any" two fleet managers explained.

Yep, ordinary people can still buy a new 2014 Nissan Rogue "Select". MSRP starts around $21,500.

After getting the sunvisors fixed (see my thread), very happy with our 2014. The Regional Rep I met with said Rogue is outselling Altima now. Can't keep them in stock. Based on my experiences back in August, some dealerships were reluctant to deal at all as they were selling every one they got. The dealers I visited were pushing the Murano much harder.
As for CVT, it's our first and no problems. Quiet and powerful enough and fairly fun to drive. Press the accelerator and you have all the performance you need. Makes far less noise than our old RAV4 when it had to climb an incline and doesn't require the obvious automatic downshift.
BTW, I am a long time "car guy" and have friends who are "car guys." It's an SUV, not a sports car. Those shopping for it know they want, whether car guy or not.
