Fuel system issues - '00 Escalade

Have an issue with our vehicle going dead while driving down the road. Sometimes it doesn't power all the way down. When it powered all the way down sometimes you could let it set for a minute and then it would crank back. So we thought it was the fuel pump. Replaced it. And my husband replaced a sensor. Still having the issue. Only now since we replaced the fuel pump can smell gas big time. I am scared to put my kids in this thing. Thanks in advanced
