    It would be helpful to have a commonplace object in the picture for reference- Aquafina water bottle, iPhone, something of that nature.

    Things like this happen more often then they should. Some designer somewhere is given free range to make something 'cool' and end up severely compromising function.

    My 1996 Taurus SHO's center console had a couple of these: 'cup holders' so wide and shallow that even a coffee mug would tip over and a cubby at the junction of the console and center stack that was smooth hard plastic with curved sides and back. Anything placed therein became a flying missile at any acceleration beyond glacial or when turning any corner.
