    Two observations:
    1) Seats fold down
    2) What do you imagine those roof rails are for?

It's also worth noting that the Cherokee's cargo area is less dog friendly than the competition as well. The cargo floor is higher plus rear bumper is even higher than the floor making this quite a leap for some dogs. Having spent years lifting an aging greyhound into the back of a CUV, these things matter.

if you have to have a jeep and you want to travel with a family... plan on a thule/yakima cargo box on top. the grand cherokee isn't much better.

All vehicles involve compromises. For Jeep maintaining their off-road heritage is all important, which has cost them in terms of cargo area. I'm used to living with a car with a small cargo area (WRX hatch), so this Jeep (for me) offers a huge cargo area. As big as the competition? No, but I can live with that, given what it can do off road.

FWIW, the old XJ Cherokee's cargo area was far worse than this new Cherokee. It had the spare tire mounted vertically on the driver's side taking up a large chunk of cargo space—and if you had the full-size spare, it ate up even more cargo space. In addition there was no split-fold rear seat. Also, the rear seat did not slide forward, and the front passenger seat did not have a fold-flat feature. So while this new Cherokee may not match the roomiest small SUVS in terms of cargo area, it's light-years better than the old Cherokee.

If having max cargo area is at the top of your must-have list, then looking at another vehicle is perhaps what you should be doing.

Once we go from being DINKs to being DICKs(...Couple Kids..LOL!) and likely SICKs at that point, then for the 2nd vehicle we'll get a minivan, likely the next T&C w/AWD.

In the meantime we ordered a 2015 Cherokee Limited with all the options of your long-termer, except in silver. We did add four more options(sunroof, luxury group, engine block heater, and wireless charging pad). It is due to arrive at our dealer in a couple days.
