GMC Sierra 4wd only working in auto

Hey folks. I have a 2000 gmc Sierra and can't seem to get my front wheels to lock in 4hi or 4low. However when I put the truck into 4auto it pulls just fine. I can here the thunk indicating that the transfer case has shifted into 4lo but I only get pull from the rear wheels. I am sure that I will get some good advice aa to how to isolate my problem and I thank all of u in advance

I guess no one else has this problem as I am having difficulty finding any threads where 4wd only worked in 4auto
